  • A Unique Type of Archaic Oral Poetry
Oral Tradition, 6/2 3 (1991): 200-224 Bugaršćice: A Unique Type of Archaic Oral Poetry Josip Kekez Historical and Geographical Defi nition In the context of oral literature, bugaršćice1 represent an important and unique genre in many respects. They are, among other things, striking proof that oral literature is not simply a discovery of the nineteenth century—as was long maintained in South Slavic regions—and that two literatures, oral and written, were in contact from the earliest times in a number of ways, including the manner of their recording and study. On the other hand, we would know nothing of the genre in question and its aesthetic values if interest in oral literature had not existed from the beginning; many passages in the early literature of Croatia would have forever remained obscure, while Croatian poetry of the present day would have assumed a different profi le. Scholars have not so far taken suffi cient account of the fact that the poetic system of the bugaršćica is distinctly indigenous and in many of its features remote from other verse forms of oral literature; nor is there evidence that it existed at any time or in any national community or setting other than those discussed below. Apart from one or two examples, all bugaršćice have been recorded on the eastern Adriatic strip from Istria in the north to the Gulf of Kotor in the south, so that they are geographically strictly defi ned. One poem was recorded on the western side of the Adriatic, in southern Italy, but it was sung in their own language by settlers from the eastern side of the Adriatic.

FNS 2018; 4(1): 146–157 Davor Dukić* The Zrinski-Frankopan conspiracy as a national sacrificial narrative https://doi.org/10.1515/fns-2018-0013 The topic of this paper concerns the representations of the Zrinski-Frankopan (Zriny Frangipani) Conspiracy in five Croatian dramas, written and/or performed between 1900 and 2010, in the four different political constellations: in the late Habsburg Monarchy, in the early monarchist Yugoslavia, i. e. in the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes, in the Socialist Yugoslavia and finally in the modern independent Croatian state. The Zrinski-Frankopan Conspiracy is a sacrificial narrative par excellence in the Croatian culture as literary sources often directly refer the Conspiracy’s actors as martyrs. Therefore this constitutes an interesting subject for this thematic section. The basic methodological problem in this analysis is how to interpret a single literary text as a concretization of a historical myth which in itself represents a non-existent, intuitive, fluid construct. A critical reconstruction of a historical myth and/or a meta-narrative is an unrewarding, if not futile task, so it is there- fore more fruitful to focus on its potential ruptures which undermine its semantic coherence. These ruptures can represent traumatic or at least uneasy loci in the historical meta-narratives, which makes them prone to interpretation. The selected text analyzed here can be contextualized in three different frameworks of the national narration: firstly, in the historical myth about the Conspiracy, i.

MENTAL MAPS IN THE SERB-CATHOLIC IMAGINATION IN DUBROVNIK Abstract This article describes the experience of the community of Serb-Catholics living in Dubrovnik in the early twentieth century. It is based primarily on an investigation of the literary and cultural periodical Srdj (1902–08). This study focuses, fi rstly, on the conceptual ambivalence resulting from efforts to apply linguistic criteria to determine Serbian identity and, secondly, on the efforts to construct a mental map that would serve projections of Serbian symbolic territory. While the presence of the Serb-Catholic milieu in the city was short-lived (from the mid-nineteenth century to the First World War), it nevertheless left traces on the urban landscape that typifi ed the ambivalent formation of national identity along religious lines, as Croatians were associated with Catholicism and Serbs with Orthodoxy. Keywords: Serb-Catholics, Dubrovnik, Dalmatia, nation-building, Serbia, Habsburg monarchy I INTRODUCTION A glance at the map of the Habsburg Monarchy following the Aus- tro-Hungarian Compromise of 1867 reveals emphatically just how peripheral a place Dalmatia (offi cially the Kingdom of Dalmatia) had in the Empire. Dubrovnik had an even less important position. This once wealthy commune that had competed with Venice in terms of status was now located at the periphery of a periphery, squeezed into a narrow isthmus between the Adriatic and Bosnia and Herzegovina. Owing to its exceptionally rich culture – which is evident both in the cultural landscape (architecture) and in writing (in documents from the past and in literature) – Croatians and Serbians alike, as well as Italians http://dx.doi.org/10.12775/APH.2020.121.07 144 Maciej Czerwiński in some sense, have staked claims to Dubrovnik.

  • Count Ivan Anž Frankopan, the Royal Steward of the Estate in Sweden 1426 - 1434
COUNT IVAN ANŽ FRANKOPAN, THE ROYAL STEWARD OF THE ESTATE IN SWEDEN 1426 - 1434 Mladen Ibler Within the framework of medieval history of Europe and its own geostrategic location, Scandinavian royalties and nobility entertained contacts with central and western Europe. Less known however, is the relationship between Eric of Pomerania, the King of the three Scandinavian realms and the Croatian nobility of Frankopans. This paper attempts to provide the short description of the conditions in Croatia and Scandinavia at the beginning of XV century, the relationship between Eric of Pommerania and count Ivan Anž Frankopan, and the role of the Republic of Dubrovnik (Ragusa) during King Eric’s travel on his way to the Holy Land 1424-5. Based on Dubrovnik, Budapest, Vatican, and Scandinavian sources, a special emphasis is beeing given to the events surrounding Ivan Anž Frankopan’s visit to Sweden. In Venetian and Scandinavian sources, he is reffered to under the name of Gian Franchi and Johan Franke. Due to this reason, historians have been unaware of the real identity of King Eric’s steward of the estate (fief) Stegeborg in Sweden 1426-34, count Ivan Anž Frankopan. Key words: Frankopan, Ivan Anž; the King Eric of Pommerania; Stegeborg; Kalmar Union I. The Kingdom of Croatia, Dalmatia and Slavonia has been in personal union with Kingdom of Hungary since 1102. Its main parts, Dalmatia and Croatia were governed by a viceroy (Ban), and Slavonia, as the third part, was governed by its own viceroy. In the beginning of the fifteenth century the Kingdom was the object of fight between King Ladislas of Naples and his rival Sigismund of Luxemburg.
