My only complaint is that it is very limiting and selective as to which actors are profiled. It seems the author only picked a handful of actors to write about, and left so many others out of the book. Otherwise, it's a curiousity if nothing else. Cold spaghetti diner and such small portionsBy Shawn GordonJames Prickette's hefty book, 532 pages before index, is both a treasure trove of information and a bust of a missed opportunity. First off the selections are somewhat bewildering, absent are genre favorites like Eli Wallach, Jack Palance and Charles Bronson, included are Rory Calhoun, who made only one spaghetti, Jack Elam, who had small roles in four. What Prickette does deliver is a well investigated study of a few note worthy stars like Klaus Kinski, James Coburn, Chuck Connors, John Ireland and the expected examination of Clint Eastwood, the section on Lee Van Cleef is worth the purchase of the book alone. There are some well researched chapters on lesser known names that will peek the interest of fans, actors like William Berger, Richard Harrison, Guy Madison, Gordon Mitchell and Mickey Hargitay. However, as a serious spaghetti western aficionado and erudite I know I was hoping to find further information on stars such as Franco Nero, Terence Hill, Bud Spenser, Gian Maria Volonte, Fabio Testi, Guillanio Gemma, Tomas Milian, Anthony Steffan,Giani Garko, Frank Wolf, Mario Brega, Marianne Koch, etc. The stars who represent the spaghetti western in my mind and learn how it is that they came to star in these films, what their fame was in other parts of the world and such.One other complaint is the many type-o's in this book, who ever edited this tomb did a fairly lousy job.Check out my reviews at moviezonemagazine.com Format Paperback Subject Biography Autobiography About the AuthorBorn in Georgia, raised and continues to live in Florida. Issue #70 Featuring: TURN I’ll KILL YOU, THE FAR SIDE OF JERICHO, Spaghetti Western Poster Art, Spaghetti Western Film Locations in the U.S.A., Tim Lucas interview, DVD reviews WAI! #70 The Swingin’ Doors Welcome to another on-line edition of Westerns…All’Italiana! kicking off 2008. Several things are happening for the fanzine. We have found a host or I should say two hosts for the zine. Jamie Edwards and his Drive-In Connection are hosting the zine for most of our U.S. readers (www.thedriveinconnection.com) and Sebastian Haselbeck is hosting it at his Spaghetti Westerns Database for the European readers (www.spaghetti- western.net). Our own Kim August is working on a new website (here’s her current blog site http://gunsmudblood.blogspot.com/ ) that will archive all editions of the zine starting with issue #1. This of course will take quite a while to complete with Kim still in college. Thankfully she’s very young as she’ll be working on this project until her retirement 60 years from now. Anyway you can visit these sites and read or download your copy of the fanzine whenever you feel the urge. Several new DVD and CD releases have been issued since the last edition of WAI! and co-editor Lee Broughton has covered the DVDs as always. The CDs will be featured on the last page of each issue so you will be made aware of what is available. We have completed several interviews of interest in recent months. One with author Tim Lucas, who has just recently released his huge volume on Mario Bava, appears in this issue.

The Adventures of Antoine Doinel
The Adventures of Antoine Doinel Dir: Francois Truffaut, France, 1959, 1962, 1968, 1970 and 1979 A review by Richard Harrison, Norwich City College, UK May 5th, 2004 marks the sixtieth birthday of Jean-Pierre Leaud, perhaps the most famous juvenile in world cinema history. As Antoine Doinel, his rise from pre-pubescent adolescent to fully grown man across five Francois Truffaut films between 1959 and 1979 is chronicled in a luxurious five DVD set from the Criterion Collection. The 400 Blows (1959), Antoine And Colette (1962), Stolen Kisses (1968), Bed And Board (1970) and Love On The Run (1979) provide not only a detailed insight into the cycle’s eponymous star but also a semi- autobiographical portrait of their director. The five DVD set is well packaged, with each film having been painstakingly remastered. The picture quality is outstanding, and reveals the true beauty of the films (compare the films with the short clips that appear in the television show extracts). Antoine and Colette appears on the same disc as the The 400 Blows which enables the fifth disc to include Les Mistons (1957), a delightful short film which acts as precursor to the Doinel cycle, and a fascinating documentary piece Working With Francois Truffaut: Claude de Givray and Bernard Revon (1986). All the discs have extras of some sort, ranging from Brian Stonehill’s superb, friendly commentary that accompanies the The 400 Blows to newsreel footage of the 1959 and 1968 Cannes Film Festivals, and numerous television interviews with Francois Truffaut and Jean- Pierre Leaud. An informative and nicely illustrated seventy-two page booklet completes what is an essential purchase for any film enthusiast, and reveals why Truffaut’s premature death in 1984 was such a catastrophic loss, not only for the world in general but for cinema in particular.

The Shaw-Tarantino Connection: Rolling Thunder Pictures and the Exploitation Aesthetics of Cool By Kenneth Chan Introduction The opening credit sequence of Quentin Tarantino’s Kill Bill Vol. 1 features the Shaw Brothers logo—the letters “SB” encased within a crest symbol not unlike the one used by Warner Bros.—emblazoned across a multicolored frosted-glass backdrop, accompanied by the words “Shaw Scope” and a cheesy trumpet fanfare. For many mainstream American moviegoers, this is probably their first encounter with this iconic symbol from Hong Kong’s cinematic history. But for Hong Kong and diasporic Chinese audiences (in countries such as Taiwan, Thailand, Malaysia, and Singapore; and in Chinatowns across North America and Europe), this highly familiar branding sequence heralds the movie pleasures ethnic Chinese audiences have come to expect and love from the Shaw films produced during the late-1950s to the mid-1980s in Hong Kong.

Demagogue, Conqueror, Dictator: Receptions of Julius Caesar in the Cold War Years 1945-65 Tyla Cascaes Bachelor of Arts (Hons I) Bachelor of Arts 0000-0002-3253-0837 A thesis submitted for the degree of Master of Philosophy (Classics) at The University of Queensland in 2020 Historical and Philosophical Inquiry xiv Abstract This thesis will investigate how images of Julius Caesar have been used to influence and facilitate discussions of power in the present, particularly in the years 1945-65, from the end of the Second World War to the escalation of American involvement in Vietnam. This period marks the beginning of the Cold War and witnesses a number of notable cultural and political developments, including the prominence of democratic and Republican politics in the West, a general opposition to large-scale global warfare, and an increasing concern for cultural and gender equality. This unique context influences the use of Caesar in this period. Each chapter of this thesis will focus on a common trope of Caesar which appears frequently in film, literature, and popular culture. Namely, Caesar as a demagogue, or popular Republican politician, a conqueror, and a dictator. Wherever possible the case studies included in these chapters will draw on Caesars from a range of genres and locations in order to provide a well-rounded view on the overall use of Caesar in this period. The texts analysed in this thesis include epic films such as Spartacus (1960) and Cleopatra (1963), peplum films including Caesar against the Pirates (1962) and Caesar the Conqueror (1962), and works of literature and popular culture such as Rex Warner’s Young Caesar (1958), Jules Archer’s Twentieth Century Caesar: Benito Mussolini (1963), and early editions of The Adventures of Asterix.

Western Hispano-Italiano Por lo corriente, el Western europeo es identificado con la euforia hispano-italiana del género durante la segunda mitad de los años 60, ese fenómeno artístico-industrial que por doquier fue denominado Spaghetti Western. Un mote necio, despectivo y bien poco ingenioso, por cierto, pero que hoy, paradójicamente, resulta entrañable y, por ende, casi reivindicable. Tal identificación, con todo, no es gratuita. Puesto que el enorme, y bien significativo, éxito de Por un puñado de dólares (Sergio Leone, 1964) introdujo una manera nueva y propia de abordar el género, tan bien recibida a escala popular que desfasó por completo el enfoque previo del Western. Originando automáticamente el, en efecto, Spaghetti Western, con todo lo que comportó para las cinematografías española e italiana. Ahora bien, abordando la materia con el debido rigor y de forma panorámica, aparece la existencia de un reiterado error doble.
