Irreverent Persia IRANIAN IRANIAN SERIES SERIES Poetry expressing criticism of social, political and cultural life is a vital integral part of IRREVERENT PERSIA Persian literary history. Its principal genres – invective, satire and burlesque – have been INVECTIVE, SATIRICAL AND BURLESQUE POETRY very popular with authors in every age. Despite the rich uninterrupted tradition, such texts FROM THE ORIGINS TO THE TIMURID PERIOD have been little studied and rarely translated. Their irreverent tones range from subtle (10TH TO 15TH CENTURIES) irony to crude direct insults, at times involving the use of outrageous and obscene terms. This anthology includes both major and minor poets from the origins of Persian poetry RICCARDO ZIPOLI (10th century) up to the age of Jâmi (15th century), traditionally considered the last great classical Persian poet. In addition to their historical and linguistic interest, many of these poems deserve to be read for their technical and aesthetic accomplishments, setting them among the masterpieces of Persian literature. Riccardo Zipoli is professor of Persian Language and Literature at Ca’ Foscari University, Venice, where he also teaches Conceiving and Producing Photography. The western cliché about Persian poetry is that it deals with roses, nightingales, wine, hyperbolic love-longing, an awareness of the transience of our existence, and a delicate appreciation of life’s fleeting pleasures. And so a great deal of it does. But there is another side to Persian verse, one that is satirical, sardonic, often obscene, one that delights in ad hominem invective and no-holds barred diatribes. Perhaps surprisingly enough for the uninitiated reader it is frequently the same poets who write both kinds of verse. -

Thesis Adviser: Felicitas Opwis, Ph.D. ABSTRACT A Thousand and One Wives: Investigating the Intellectual History of the Exegesis of Verse 4:24 traces the intellectual legacy of the exegesis of Qur’an 4:24, which is used as the proof text for the permissibility of mut’a (temporary marriage). I ask if the use of verse 4.24 for the permissibility of mut’a marriage is justified within the rules and regulations of Qur’anic hermeneutics. I examine twenty Qur’an commentaries, the chronological span of which extends from the first extant commentary to the present day in three major Islamicate languages. I conclude that doctrinal self-identity, rather than strictly philological analyses, shaped the interpretation of this verse. As Western academia’s first comprehensive work concerning the intellectual history of mut’a marriage and sexual ethics, my work illustrates the power of sectarian influences in how scholars have interpreted verse 4:24. My dissertation is the only work in English that includes a plurality of voices from minor schools (Ibadi, Ashari, Zaidi, and Ismaili) largely neglected by Western scholars, alongside major schools, and draws from all available sub-genres of exegesis. -

Middle Eastern Festivals Islamic: Moulid el-Nabi, Milad, Milad an-Nabi, or Mawlid un-Nabi (The Prophet’s Birthday) Prophet Muhammad (also Mohammed, Muhammed, Mahomet, and other variants) is the founder of Islam and is regarded by Muslims as the last messenger and prophet of God. Muhammad was born in the year 570 AD and his birthday is celebrated each year on 12 Rabi el-Awal, following the Islamic calendar. Processions are held, homes or mosques are decorated, charity and food is distributed, stories about the life of Muhammad are narrated, and poems are recited by children. The main purpose of Moulid el-Nabi gatherings is to remember, observe, discuss and celebrate the advent of the birth and teachings of the holy Prophet Muhammad. Ramadan Ramadan is a celebration that takes place in the ninth month of the Islamic calendar, when the Quran (the central religious text of Islam) was revealed to the Prophet Muhammad. The name of the feast is the name of the month. Muslims celebrate Ramadan for an entire month. It is a time for prayers (some people pray 5 times a day), friendship, and thinking about how to help others. Many people fast during the hours of daylight for the entire month. Before the sun rises, families gather to eat a big breakfast. This breakfast before dawn is called Suhoor (also called Sehri, Sahari and Sahur in other languages). Each family member then fasts until the sun sets in the evening. After the sun sets, they have a big supper. This evening meal for breaking the daily fast is called Iftar and is often done as a community, with Muslims gathering to break their fast together. -

Waruta The teaching of Zarathustra are found mainly in the Gathas. In later writings in the history of Zoroastrianism, as happens with most religions, there were some changes in the teachings, but all the same Zarathustras teachings have continued as the basis and foundation of the teachings of Zorastrianism. The religion Zarathustra taught was not a completely new religion; it was rather a religion based on the old religion of his people, but which he reformed so radically that it had now important elements and teachings deriving from his prophetic genius. First and foremost, in opposition to the polytheism and ritualism of the old religion, Zarathustra taught a unique ethical monotheism.1 He declared Ahura Mazdas the one and only true God. This deity was already known in the old religion and was paid a special allegiance by Zarathustra’s own clan; and in comparison to other deities he was regarded as highly ethical. Ahura Mazda seems to be identical with Varuna, a sky god of vedic religion, who was similarly regarded as a very ethical god.
