Byzantine and Modern Greek Studies Vol. 30 No. 2 (2006) 201–223 Demetrios Capetanakis: a Greek poet (coming out) in England* Dimitris Papanikolaou St Cross College, Oxford The homosexual undertones of Demetrios Capetanakis’s English writings become evident when the work is seen in the context of the British literary circle that was instrumental in its publication. However, reading Capetanakis’s poems as a ‘coming out’ narrative leads us to assess the mismatching interpretations of gender and sexuality in Greece and the West and the larger complications of identity and identifications. It is suggested that, in Capetanakis’s work written in English, what seems at first a liberating expression of the ‘true self’ through writing can instead be viewed as positing the problem of the idea of a stable, unified and solid identity. In October 1995 Edafos Dance Theatre, an Athenian group known for their innovative work,1 presented Reakbiem cia to tealoz tou earvta (Requiem for the End of Love) in a derelict electricity warehouse in Athens; the performance was staged and choreographed by Dimitris Papaioannou to a specially commissioned musical piece by Giorgos Koumendakis. The Requiem’s libretto came from the Greek translation of the poem ‘Lazarus’, originally written in English by the poet and critic Demetrios Capetanakis a few days before his death in London’s Westminster Hospital in 1944 at the age of thirty-two. As a dance theatre performance, the Requiem did not hide either its gay genealogy or its activist agenda: the whole of this thirty-minute piece was taken up by the brilliantly monotonous image of male bodies engaging in erotically charged movements before falling down a long staircase — the relevance to the Aids epidemic becoming more than clear. -

Another sacrifice to the Hogarth Press. Yet what I owe the Hogarth Press is barely paid by the whole of my handwriting. I’m the only woman in England free to write what I like. The others must be thinking of series’ & editors. Yesterday I heard from Harcourt Brace that Mrs. D & C.R. are selling 148 & 73 weekly— Isn’t that a surprising rate for the 4th month? Doesn’t it portend a bathroom & a w.c. -

Biographical Glossary All entries are British unless otherwise noted. Ackerley, Joseph Randolph (1896–1967). Literary editor, author, and close friend of Forster’s. He was the literary editor of The Listener from 1935 to 1959. He is also the author of My Dog Tulip (1956) and We Think the World of You (1960). Auden, Wystan Hugh (1907–73). Poet and intimate friend of Isherwood’s. Major works of poetry include The Orators (1932), The Age of Anxiety: A Baroque Eclogue (1947), The Shield of Achilles (1955), and City Walls and Other Poems (1969). He collaborated with Isherwood on three plays: The Dog Beneath the Skin (1935), The Ascent of F6 (1936), and On the Frontier (1939). Bachardy, Don (1934– ). American painter and Isherwood’s companion from 1953 until Isherwood’s death in 1986. His drawings have been pub- lished in several books: October (1983), Last Drawings of Christopher Isherwood (1990), and Stars in My Eyes (2000). His paintings and drawings are in the collections of the National Portrait Gallery in London, the Metropolitan Museum of New York, and other major art institutions. Barger, Harold (1907–89). From Bournemouth School he went to King's College, London, where he read chemistry (BSc, 1922). He then read mathematics at Trinity College, Cambridge (BA, 1925), where he took the name Michael through admiration for the Russian savant Mikhail Lomonosov. From 1925 to 1941, Roberts was a schoolmaster; until 1931 and again from 1934 at the Royal Grammar School, Newcastle-upon-Tyne; from 1931-1934 at the Mercers' School, London; and in summer 1934 at the King's School, Chester. From September 1941 to March 1945 he worked for the European Service of the BBC. He then became principal of the College of St Mark and St John, Chelsea, and Anglican teacher-training college. Further distribution or reproduction in any format is prohibited without the permission of the copyright holder. i FRANCIS BRETT YOUNG’S BIRMINGHAM North Bromwich – City of Iron ABSTRACT In this thesis I investigate Francis Brett Young’s Birmingham portrait in his North Bromwich novels, showing it to be a valid interpretation, though biased to suit the anti-urban prejudices of its author. Chapter One sets Young in his biographical and literary context. Birmingham during the North Bromwich era (c1870-1939) is examined and the role of novels as historical source established. In Chapter Two I define and explore Young’s North Bromwich canon, one exemplar among many historical realities, and show that the name and soubriquets of North Bromwich interpret Birmingham. Chapter Three investigates North Bromwich’s climate and topography, commercial, political and civic life, indicating clear Birmingham parallels. Chapter Four describes North Bromwich suburbs, housing and transport, each of which accurately replicates Birmingham originals. -

Chapter 5 William Plomer and Transnational Modernism William Plomer, Transnational Modernism and the Hogarth Press John K. Young William Plomer (1903–73), a self-described ‘Anglo-Afro-Asian’ novel- ist, poet, editor and librettist, spent only the early years of his lengthy career as a Hogarth Press author but still ranks as one of the Woolfs’ most prolifi c writers, with a total of nine titles issued during his seven years with the Press. Like Katherine Mansfi eld, Plomer made his mark with Hogarth before signing with a more established fi rm, but the depth and breadth of Plomer’s career with the Woolfs is signifi cantly greater: his fi ve volumes of fi ction presented Hogarth’s readers with ground- breaking portraits of South African, Japanese and (British) working- class cultures.
