Further distribution or reproduction in any format is prohibited without the permission of the copyright holder. i FRANCIS BRETT YOUNG’S BIRMINGHAM North Bromwich – City of Iron ABSTRACT In this thesis I investigate Francis Brett Young’s Birmingham portrait in his North Bromwich novels, showing it to be a valid interpretation, though biased to suit the anti-urban prejudices of its author. Chapter One sets Young in his biographical and literary context. Birmingham during the North Bromwich era (c1870-1939) is examined and the role of novels as historical source established. In Chapter Two I define and explore Young’s North Bromwich canon, one exemplar among many historical realities, and show that the name and soubriquets of North Bromwich interpret Birmingham. Chapter Three investigates North Bromwich’s climate and topography, commercial, political and civic life, indicating clear Birmingham parallels. Chapter Four describes North Bromwich suburbs, housing and transport, each of which accurately replicates Birmingham originals. In Chapter Five I show North Bromwich’s recreational and religious life reflecting Young’s own Birmingham experience. Chapter Six traces North Bromwich’s interpretation of Birmingham’s educational provision, particularly concentrating upon its university’s evolution. Chapter Seven establishes links between North Bromwich and Birmingham medicine, revealing thinly-disguised fictional characters as key Birmingham practioners. ABSTRACT This thesis explores the ways in which the industrialist Matthew Boulton (1728-1809) used images of his manufactory and of himself to help develop what would now be considered a ‘brand’. The argument draws heavily on archival research into the commissioning process, authorship and reception of these depictions. Such information is rarely available when studying prints and allows consideration of these images in a new light but also contributes to a wider debate on British eighteenth-century print culture. The first chapter argues that Boulton used images to convey messages about the output of his businesses, to draw together a diverse range of products and associate them with one site. Chapter two explores the setting of the manufactory and the surrounding estate, outlining Boulton’s motivation for creating the parkland and considering the ways in which it was depicted.

    Travelling to UCE Birmingham Conservatoire ROAD From M6 South or North-West Leave the M6 at Junction 6 and follow the A38(M). Follow signs to ‘City centre, Bromsgrove, (A38)’. Do not take any left exit. Go over 1 flyover and through just 1 Queensway tunnel (sign posted ‘Bromsgrove and Queen Elizabeth Hospital’). Leave this tunnel indicating left but stay in the right hand lane of the slip road. UCE Birmingham Conservatoire is located on the Paradise Circus island. Follow directions below for parking and/or loading & unloading. Parking Car parking at the Conservatoire is very limited and we regret we cannot offer parking spaces to visitors. However, there are several NCP car parks located close by, including two located on Cambridge Street. To access these car parks, at the Paradise Circus island, immediately after you pass the exit for the A456 (Broad Street), move into the left lane and take the first left into Cambridge Street. Loading & Unloading To access the Conservatoire’s car park (for loading and unloading only), pass under the bridge and turn right as if to access the Copthorne Hotel, and then right again into the underground road. Follow the road around to the left to gain access to the Conservatoire’s car park, which is at the end of the road. A goods lift is available. From M5 South-West Leave the M5 at Junction 3 and travel towards Birmingham City Centre along the A456 (Hagley Road) for 5 miles to the Five Ways island. This is easily distinguishable as it is surrounded by large office blocks and a Tesco store.

    AN INDUSTRIAL HIVE: BIRMINGHAM’S JEWELLERY QUARTER Carl Chinn Birmingham’s Jewellery Quarter is famed nationally and internationally but locally its importance can be taken for granted or even overlooked – as can that of the jewellery trade itself which has a longstanding connection with our city. That lack of attention is not a new phenomenon. By the mid-nineteenth century, jewellery making was regarded as one of the four main Birmingham trades. Along with the brass trade and the manufacture of guns and buttons it flourished above the rest but very little was written about it. That is surprising for such an important industry which remains prominent in modern Birmingham and which has such a fascinating history covering more than 200 years. Birmingham Lives Archive Birmingham Lives Jewellers at work in the Jewellery Quarter in the 1950s. iStock AN INDUSTRIAL HIVE: BIRMINGHAM’S JEWELLERY QUARTER Goldsmiths Although the origins of the modern Jewellery Quarter lie in the eighteenth century, the working of precious metal in Birmingham can be traced to the later Middle Ages. Dick Holt’s research uncovered a tantalising reference from 1308 to ‘Birmingham pieces’ in an inventory of the possessions of the Master of the Knights Templar. He believed that the objects were doubtless small, although of high value, and seem to have been precious ornaments of some kind. What is certain is the presence of goldsmiths in that period.     HS2 London – West Midlands Design Refinement Consultation 8. Calvert Infrastructure Maintenance Depot Proposed change The Secretary of State is minded to provide an additional east-south ‘chord’ - a short, curved connecting rail line - to improve access from the proposed Calvert Infrastructure Maintenance Depot to HS2 tracks to the south. 8.1 Summary of January 2012 proposal 8.1.1 The January 2012 route included access to the HS2 mainline from the Calvert Infrastructure Maintenance Depot (IMD) via a link line to the north of the depot. 8.1.2 At this location HS2 crosses the Bicester-Bletchley line, which is currently a lightly used single track freight railway. The IMD is just to the north east of the crossing point. There is also an east-to-south railway chord serving the Calvert waste transfer facility and connecting the Bicester-Bletchley line to the line to Aylesbury which runs south from Calvert alongside the proposed HS2 track. 8.1.3 In January 2013, the Government announced its support for the East West Rail (EWR) project to upgrade and electrify these railway lines to provide services from Bedford to Oxford and beyond as well as onto the Aylesbury Link. The EWR services turning south to Aylesbury will require a new east-south chord, because the lines to Aylesbury will be shifted slightly eastwards to accommodate the new HS2 lines. 8.2 Issues identified with the January 2012 proposal 8.2.1 The developed January 2012 proposal envisages that trains from the IMD heading south would reverse northwards into sidings near Twyford before continuing south on HS2 tracks.
