General introduction • It is situated 7 miles south-west of Biharsharif and 7 miles north of Rajgir. • Buchanan was the first to notice its antiquity and as told by Brahmanas there, he took it to be the site of ancient Kundalapura, the capital of the king Bhimaka, the father of Rukmini. • Buchanan felt that the ruins represented a Buddhist site. • Kittoe who next realized the importance of the site in 1847 and had seen the images at Baragaon mistakenly took the area to be a Br General Introduction • It was Alexander Cunningham who identified the extensive site as Nalanda in 1861-62. • Alexander Cunningham had made some trail digs but carried no large scale excavations. • In 1871 or so, Broadly, the then S.D.O. of Bihar, began excavations on the main mound with 1000 labourers, and within 10 days he laid ware the eastern, western and southern facades of the great temple and published a short reports of the excavations. Nalanda: Center of Buddhist Religion and Learning in Ancient India History of Nalanda goes back to the days of Mahavira and Buddha in 6th century B.C. It was the place of birth and Nirvana of Sariputra, one of the famous disciples of Buddha. The place rose into prominence in 5th century A.D as a great monastic-cum-educational institution for oriental art and learning in the whole Buddhist world attraction students from distant countries including China. -

1 Mapping Monastic Geographicity Or Appeasing Ghosts of Monastic Subjects Indrani Chatterjee Rarely do the same apparitions inhabit the work of modern theorists of subjectivity, politics, ethnicity, the Sanskrit cosmopolis and medieval architecture at once. However, the South Asianist historian who ponders the work of Charles Taylor, Partha Chatterjee, James Scott and Sheldon Pollock cannot help notice the apparitions of monastic subjects within each. Tamara Sears has gestured at the same apparitions by pointing to the neglected study of monasteries (mathas) associated with Saiva temples.1 She finds the omission intriguing on two counts. First, these monasteries were built for and by significant teachers (gurus) who were identified as repositories of vast ritual, medical and spiritual knowledge, guides to their practice and over time, themselves manifestations of divinity and vehicles of human liberation from the bondage of life and suffering. Second, these monasteries were not studied even though some of these had existed into the early twentieth century. Sears implies that two processes have occurred simultaneously. Both are epistemological. One has resulted in a continuity of colonial- postcolonial politics of recognition. The identification of a site as ‘religious’ rested on the identification of a building as a temple or a mosque. Residential sites inhabited by religious figures did not qualify for preservation. The second is the foreshortening of scholarly horizons by disappeared buildings. Modern scholars, this suggests, can only study entities and relationships contemporaneous with them and perceptible to the senses, omitting those that evade such perception or have disappeared long ago. This is not as disheartening as one might fear. -

CHAPTER IV PATRONAGE OF BUDDHISM Chapter IV Patronage of Buddhism In this chapter, an attempt has been made to examine the development of Buddhism under the patronage of the royal dynasties, merchants, traders, artisans and householders from the early Buddhist period to 12th century C.E. in the east coast of India. It is true that most of the patronage comes from royal dynasties. In the ancient Indian history patronage was a formal religious system, clearly linked to the ideological needs of a political organisation and its socio economic base. It would thus be interesting to study the attitude of the inhabitants of a particular region regarding patronage towards the religious recipients. The study of Buddhism under the patronage in India especially in east coast of India, undoubtedly of great importance in the spread of Buddhist culture in the study regions. Patronage is support, encouragement, privilege or financial aid that an organisation or individual bestows to another. Patronage can be defined as a multi- dimensional, sometimes loosely codified network of exchanges involving not only the production of art and literature, but also its performance, transmission, reinterpretation and preservation. The giving and receiving may take place between individuals, groups or institutions. The groups are often specialized communities of craftsmen, ritualists or scholars. According to Suchandra Ghosh, patronage is an asymmetrical relationship between one party, the patron and another one, the client. It is quite natural that the patron will be a person who possesses honour as well as economic superiority and this allows patronage.1 In her research paper she used the term „royal patronage‟ which includes not only patronage from the king but also persons who are associated with the royal court like ministers or with the royal house hold like the queen. -

It attracted students not only from India but also from other Buddhist countries. The Chinese scholars, who stayed and studied there, had left an elaborate detailed description of the excellence of education and purity of monastic life practiced there, which contributed to the world knowledge of ancient universities. They revealed the inception of the monastery, royal patronage, methods of admission and education system, students and teachers, buildings etc. Most of their positions can be identified and proved by archeological excavations. During the past many Asian countries interacted with each other through peaceful means via religion, trade and political missions. The relationship between India and China can be traced back to very early times. The gradual spread of Buddhism into those areas was a further incentive for the development of this relationship. As the result of this relationship, certain Chinese pilgrim monks travelled to India, with the objects of paying homage to Buddhist sacred places, learning from Indian Buddhist teachers and collecting of Buddhist scriptures. -

Early Medieval Northern India [UPSC Notes] The early medieval period in Northern India was marked by the domination of three political powers namely the Palas, the Rashtrakutas and the Gurjara-Pratiharas. In this article, you can read all about these three kingdoms, their political systems, administration, trade and commerce and the list of important kings from these dynasties. This is an important topic for the UPSC exam history segment. Early Medieval Northern India (Period from c. 750 - 1000 CE) This period of history was dominated by three political powers: 1. The Gurjara - Pratihara who ruled western India and the Upper Gangetic plains till the middle of the 10th century. 2. The Palas who dominated eastern India till the middle of the 9th century. 3. The Rashtrakutas who ruled the Deccan and also had control over some areas in north and south India. The Rashtrakutas ruled for a comparatively longer time and acted as a bridge between north and south India. All the above kingdoms were in constant conflict with each other and tried to gain control over the Gangetic region in north India and this struggle between the three kingdoms is referred to as “tripartite struggle”. The Pratiharas/Gurjara-Pratiharas The Gurjaras were originally pastoralists and fighters. The epic hero Lakshmana, door-keeper to his brother, was looked upon as their hero. The Pratiharas took on their title which literally means “door keeper”. • The UNESCO World Heritage Site at Khajuraho is famous for the development of the Gurjara- Pratihara style of temple building. • The kingdom was founded by Harichandra (Brahmana) in Jodhpur (southwestern Rajasthan). -

Due to scant historical evidence the extent and character of the early Aryan socio-cultural presence in Bengal, scholars are not sure about the details of religions that prevailed there prior to the Gupta period. There are, however, numerous evidences of diverse elite Aryan religious cults—Brahmanic, Buddhist and Jaina—in Bengal from the Gupta period onward. During the administration of the Palas, which extended about four hundred years (750 to 1155 A.D.), multiple definite religious systems were established in Bengal. The Senas in the latter twelfth century A.D., however, seem to have patronized Brahmanic religion exclusively. Religious Pluralism from Gupta through Pala Periods in Bengal Vaishnavism, as a part of Sanatana Dharma, was in practice in Bengal. The Krishna- legend seems to have formed an essential element of Vaishnavism in Bengal as early, at least, as the sixth or seventh century A.D. In this regard sculptures of Paharpur illustrate various incidents from the life of Krishna such as uprooting the twin arjuna trees and killing the demon Keshin. Incidents of the early life of Krishna at Gokula are also depicted. The Krishna-legend was highly popular and the Krishna cult had a special hold in Bengal by the seventh century A.D. From the eighth century onwards development of Vaishnavism in Bengal is proved by a large number of epigraphic records. Vaishnavism in Bengal probably made a contribution to the systemization of the theory of avatara , or divine descent. -

A hinterland in the old world of Islam, the early history of diffusion of Islamic civilization in Bengal is shrouded with mystery. Though the maritime and trade contacts between Arab world and Bengal can be traced during the early period of Islam, the religious and cultural interaction between these two far-fetched lands started growing only after the Muslim conquest of the region in the early 13th century. After the establishment of Muslim rule in the region, the mass conversion to Islam took place over centuries in different forms and phases. The article attempts to make a major breakthrough in constructing an early religious and cultural history of Bengal using the substantively rich and hitherto untapped archaeological materials, namely epigraphic sources (i.e., Arabic inscriptions), scattered abundantly all over the region. Keywords: Islam, Bengal, Epigraphy, Inscriptions. 1. Introduction Historically speaking, Bengal played an important role in South Asia as well as in the old world. Its famous cotton fabric “Muslin” used to export in different parts of the world. The first Oriental encounter with European colonialism also started in this region. But it was the advent of Islam that left the deepest impact on this region, which the focus of this paper. 2. The Land The early account of the spread of Islam in Bengal is shrouded in myth and mystery due to the intricate nature of its history, complexities of its social evolution and the diversities of its religious traditions and popular beliefs. -
