I'm going to break out some spoilers here, so strap in. Not how therapists work, but this is a utopia so whatever. And they come and go from her life with very little fanfare. But at the Academy, she discovers an unexpected challenge: the one man who could disrupt those plans. I like how everything is very gender-neutral, as in no male chauvinism, and that it is one of those rare books that doesn't even make a fuss about how equalitarian it is. She likes him, he is cute and fun and very good in his chosen profession. But in order for her to do that she must hone the necessary skills and place herself in positions of authority. Yeah, imagine how those fights go. If you like military science fiction, you'd like this book. Not something I find particularly interesting to read about. First of all, there's no plot. With its four star average and library availability, I did not hesitate to snatch it up. Second, the character writing is kinda flat. In that case, we can't So, yes. I feel like what Johnson chooses to show versus what we don't get to see makes for a rather sporadic mess at times, considering there's no I liked this book, despite the star rating. Well not this time, Ia is an easy name to remember ; That and the fact she was totally kick-ass. And she has other powerful abilities that seem to crop up "just at the very moment they are needed", leaving us to wonder why we hadn't heard of these powers before. Readers also enjoyed. After several centuries of silence, the Greys are back, and the Alliance must now combat both a rapacious, sadistic enemy, and a terrifying, technologically superior foe. Instead, she propped her elbows on her knees and slouched her chin into her hands. She was brave and strong, and even in moments when it seemed like everything was too difficult to go on, she had the mantra of literally saving the world to keep her going. The second half covered a larger span of time though so a lot had to be packed into not necessarily enough pages. At times she seems far too overpowered, but if you like that kind of thing like I do you'll love this. Extremely capable. That's kind of refreshing in modern sf. Just like I tend to skip sex scenes in other books none here thought, nothing of that sort at all , when it came to be too much military stuff I skimmed. We follow our protagonist through her "planned" getting into the "right service", her training and then into service. Overall it was a good book if you want to completely lose yourself in a nice book where the main character is always super bad ass and ready to kick ass. She's a super-soldier, and everyone loves and idolizes her except the bad guys, of course. Even though you know more than usually that everything is going to be ok, you still want to know how everything is going to be accomplished. And while the action packed second have is much better paced and keeps you turning pages, the character flaw issue becomes more bothersome here and really gets in the way. After all was said and done it makes perfect sense why she did it, but I worry that too many people now know about her abilities which could come back to harm her. That's fucked up! Or if you simply want a book where a female character sinks and swims based on her own insights and courage as well as precognitive powers all the while knowing that the fate of a galaxy will be determined by her actions, this is the book for you. Once into the action section quite a good read and fun. Well, that was unexpected.

At least she did so in the unofficial short story by Trekkie Paula Smith. "Mary Sue" has since come to stand for the insertion of an idealized authorial representative in a popular work. Derided as an exercise in narcissism, Mary Sue is in fact a figure ofsubaltern critique, challenging the stereotypes of the original.The stereotypes of popular culture insinuate themselves deeply into our lives, coloring our views on occupations and roles. From Hermione Granger-led stories, to Harry Potter in Kolkata, to Star Trek same-sex romances, Mary Sues re-imagine our cultural landscape,granting agency to those denied it in the popular mythology. Lacking the global distribution channels of traditional media, Mary Sue authors now find an alternative in the World Wide Web, which brings their work to the world. Despite copyright law's grant of rights in derivative works to the original's owners, we argue that Mary Sues that challenge the orthodoxy of the originallikely constitutefair use. The Mary Sue serves as a metonym for all derivative uses that challenge the hegemony of the original. Scholars raise three principal critiques to such fair use: (1) why not write your own story rather than borrowing another's?     Time-Travel to P & P: Web-based Chinese Fanfic of Jane Austen Jin Feng Grinnell College Occupying a secure place in both “the solemn pantheon of classic English literature and the exuberantly commercial realm of pop culture” in the West,1 Jane Austen’s works are also generating enthusiastic fans on the Chinese cyberspace. Chinese fans may not possess the same background knowledge demonstrated by those who call themselves “Janeites,” who show “self-consciously idolatrous enthusiasm for ‘Jane’ and every detail relative to her” in the histories of English and American literature, 2 or by users at the Republic of Pemberley, a renowned English-language website featuring lore, fan fiction (fanfic), and discussion related to all things Austen. They may also lack resources to partake in the wide variety of Austen-themed conferences, balls, and tourism enjoyed by their Western counterparts.3 But they more than make up for the ostensibly limited scope and depth of their engagements through creative and passionate rewritings, reinterpretations, and debates of the original on the Chinese Web. In this article, I examine a group of Chinese-language web-based fanfic works of Austen’s Pride and Prejudice (P& P) published at Yaya Bay, a U.S.-based discussion forum catering to world-wide Chinese speaking audiences. Michaels ABSTRACT This thesis suggests that fanfiction—so often considered to be the realm only of the obsessed or juvenile—has shaken off the label of ‘derivative’ and emerged as an independent artistic medium.
