IPRPD International Journal of Arts, Humanities & Social Science ISSN 2693-2547 (Print), 2693-2555 (Online) Volume 02; Issue no 06: June 08, 2021 Prime Minister Suga, Gender Equality and Rapport Speech: A Study of Speech Style Shoji Azuma 1 1 Department of World Languages and Cultures, University of Utah, USA Abstract Issues related to gender equality have been widely and globally discussed in settings such as politics, education, healthcare and the workplace, among others. In Japan, the Japanese government has been working very hard to increase the number of women involved in Japanese politics, with minimal progress to date. The present prime minister of Japan, Yoshihide Suga, has intentionally sought to bring attention to this issue. He has, for the first time, selected a female cabinet relations chief for his government. His appointment of a female to this post is unprecedented. Unfortunately, due to a recent ethical code violation by the newly appointed female appointee and role model of female leadership in Japan, he felt constrained to accept her resignation from the post. The present study explores Prime Minister Suga’s treatment of this gender-related issue by examining his personal interviews with the media and press reporters in his cabinet. The study finds that Suga falls short of adopting an emotive and rapport style of speech which in turn, fails to attract listeners’ and voters’ support. For the estimated 1.2 million New York families in rent arrears — many of whom are families with children — this news brought a momentary sigh of relief, but the paralyzing fear of eviction this spring shortly followed as New York still lacks any long-term plan to keep families safely housed. With hospitalizations and positivity rates continuing to spike and new unemployment claims being led at a dizzying pace, this temporary eviction ban is not a long-term solution, nor is waiting for the stars to align so we can return to “normal.” Consider this: When the 12.1% of New Yorkers collecting unemployment are able to return to a healthy job market, how many months of rental arrears will have piled up? And is repayment even possible? In 2018, 22% of New York City renters paid more than half of their household income in rent. -

Chapel Hill 2019 Approved by: Wayne Lee Michael Morgan Benjamin Waterhouse Daniel Bolger Hal Brands ©2019 Joseph David Stieb ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ii ABSTRACT Joseph David Stieb: The Regime Change Consensus: Iraq in American Politics, 1990-2003 (Under the direction of Wayne Lee) This study examines the containment policy that the United States and its allies imposed on Iraq after the 1991 Gulf War and argues for a new understanding of why the United States invaded Iraq in 2003. At the core of this story is a political puzzle: Why did a largely successful policy that mostly stripped Iraq of its unconventional weapons lose support in American politics to the point that the policy itself became less effective? I argue that, within intellectual and policymaking circles, a claim steadily emerged that the only solution to the Iraqi threat was regime change and democratization. While this “regime change consensus” was not part of the original containment policy, a cohort of intellectuals and policymakers assembled political support for the idea that Saddam’s personality and the totalitarian nature of the Baathist regime made Iraq uniquely immune to “management” strategies like containment. The entrenchment of this consensus before 9/11 helps explain why so many politicians, policymakers, and intellectuals rejected containment after 9/11 and embraced regime change and invasion. -

While last year, we faced the sad task of recognizing the lives and careers of two Oincomparable photographers, Tim Hetherington and Chris Hondros, this year our attention turns to two writers — The New York Times’ Anthony Shadid and Marie Colvin of The Sunday Times of London. While our focus then was on the horrors of Gadhafi’s Libya, it is now the Syria of Bashar al- Assad. All four of these giants of our profession gave their lives in the service of an ideal and a mission that we consider so vital to our way of life — a full, complete and objective understanding of a world that is so all too often contemptuous or ignorant of these values. Theirs are the same talents and accomplishments to which we pay tribute in each of our awards tonight — and that the Overseas Press Club represents every day throughout the year. For our mission, like theirs, does not stop as we file from this room. The OPC has moved resolutely into the digital age but our winners and their skills remain grounded in the most fundamental tenets expressed through words and pictures — unwavering objectivity, unceasing curiosity, vivid story- telling, thought-provoking commentary. -

Michael Hogan and Sara Ann Mehltretter Pennsylvania State University Abstract: During the 1992 presidential campaign, President George H. W. Bush lost a lead in the polls and subsequently the presidency to Bill Clinton. This study helps to account for that loss by illuminating weaknesses in his campaign stump speech. Bush's speech at Penn State University reflected his difficulties in distinguishing himself from his challenger and articulating a vision for his second term. The essay also illustrates larger controversies over politics and free speech on campus. Key Words: 1992 presidential election, George H. W. Bush, Bill Clinton, campaign speeches, free speech on campus, Penn State University On September 23, 1992, President George H.W. Bush brought his reelection campaign to the University Park campus of the Pennsylvania State University. Speaking on the steps of Old Main to a cheering crowd of supporters, Bush said little new in the speech. Yet it still proved controversial, not so much because of what Bush said, but because of the way the event was staged. Sparking controversy over the distribution of tickets and the treatment of protestors at the event, Bush's appearance dramatized the difficulties of staging campaign events at colleges and universities. It also raised larger issues about politics and free speech on campus. Bush's speech at Penn State was carefully prepared and vetted by his speech‐ writing staff and White House advisers. Yet despite all the effort that went into the speech, it was vague, uninspired, and unresponsive to criticisms of his administration, reflecting the larger problems with Bush's faltering campaign. -

First, a huge thank you to the more than two hundred and twenty five people from the radio and political worlds who graciously took time from their busy schedules to answer my questions. Some of them put up with repeated follow ups and nagging emails as I tried to develop an understanding of the business and its political implications. They allowed me to keep most things on the record, and provided me with an understanding that simply would not have been possible without their participation. When I began this project, I never imagined that I would interview anywhere near this many people, but now, almost five years later, I cannot imagine the project without the information gleaned from these invaluable interviews.
