We continue that tradition in this issue. This new issue of The Codex is arriving during a pandemic which has shut down all normal services in our state. Rather than let our members and subscribers down, we decided to go digital for this issue. And, by doing so, we NOTE FROM THE EDITOR 1 realized that we could go “large” by publishing Marshall Becker’s important paper on the ANNOUNCEMENTS 2 contents of caches in the Maya world wherein he calls for more investigation into supposedly SITE-SEEING: REPORTS FROM THE “empty” caches at Tikal and at other Maya sites. FIELD: ARCHAEOLOGY IN A GILDED AGE: THE UNIVERSITY OF Hattula Moholy-Nagy takes us back to an earlier PENNSYLVANIA MUSEUM’S TIKAL era in archaeology with her reminiscences of her PROJECT, 1956-1970 days at Tikal in the 1950s and 1960s. Lady by Sharp Tongue got her column in just before the Hattula Moholy-Nagy 3 shut-down happened, and she lets us in on some secrets in Lady K’abal Xook’s past at her GOSSIP COLUMN palace in Yaxchilan. -

Patricia Anawalt The Ethnic History of the Toltecs as Reflected in their Clothing* Guiado por el interés en señalar la importancia que el análisis de las vestimentas tiene para la reconstrucción cultural, este artículo considera la historia étnica de los toltecas a tra- vés de un examen de sus prendas de vestir. Para este propó- sito se ha establecido la hipótesis que la historia y las rela- ciones sociales de un pueblo pueden ser reconstruidas gracias a determinadas características en sus vestimentas. La investi- gación se ha centrado en el xicolli. Resulta que este traje típico experimentó una cierta transformación desde el clásico y postclásico temprano yucateco, donde constituía una prenda de guerra, hasta su uso como traje ritual y distintivo de la clase alta en el postclásico tardío de la región central de México. Este cambio parece haberse originado en la región huasteca, concretamente en el área desde el cual los nonoalcas, repre- sentantes de la antigua tradición teotihuacana, emprendieron la migración hacia Tollan. "Complejidad" es un concepto que consiste de variables cuyas expresiones universales están relacionadas diferencialmente en circunstancias históricas específicas (Feinman y Neitzel 1984; McGuire 1983; de Montmollin 1989; Nelson 1995; Roscoe 1993). Aquí se examinan tres de estas variables según su importancia general para modelar la complejidad y nuestra habilidad de dirigir ciertos aspectos de las variables con la información que tenemos de Naco. La centralización política se refiere hasta qué punto el poder, o la capacidad para ordenar las acciones de otros se concentra en las manos de una sola facción (Balandier 1970; Roscoe 1993:113- 114; Webster 1990). Esta variable se mide por la presencia, dimensión y número de estructuras monumentales (plataformas que tienen por lo menos 1.50 m de altura) fechadas al Preclásico Medio, que se encuentran en los sitios de Naco. El recurso de este criterio se basa en la suposición que el poder mueve a los trabajadores para levantar las estructuras asociadas con los gobernantes aspirantes y los estados que ellos anhelan gobernar. -

Rosenswig Department of Anthropology Yale University [email protected] Introducción El sitio de Cuauhtémoc está ubicado dentro de una zona del Soconusco que no ha sido documentada con anterioridad y que se encuentra entre las organizaciones estatales del Formativo Temprano de Mazatlán (Clark y Blake 1994), el centro del Formativo Medio de La Blanca (Love 1993) y el centro del Formativo Tardío de Izapa (Lowe et al. 1982) (Figura 1). Aprovechando la refinada cronología del Soconusco (Cuadro 1), el trabajo de campo que se describe a continuación aporta datos que permiten rastrear el desarrollo de Cuauhtémoc durante los primeros 900 años de vida de asentamiento en Mesoamérica. Este período de tiempo está dividido en siete fases cerámicas, y de esta forma, permite que se rastreen, prácticamente siglo por siglo, los cambios ocurridos en todas las clases de cultura material. Estos datos están siendo utilizados para documentar el surgimiento y el desarrollo de las complejidades sociopolíticas en el área. Además de los procesos locales, el objetivo de esta investigación es determinar la naturaleza de las relaciones cambiantes entre las élites de la Costa del Golfo de México y el Soconusco. El trabajo también apunta a ser significativo en lo que respecta a cruzamientos culturales, dado que Mesoamérica es sólo una entre un puñado de áreas del mundo donde la complejidad sociopolítica surgió independientemente, y el Soconusco contiene algunas de las sociedades más tempranas en las que esto ocurrió (Clark y Blake 1994; Rosenswig 2000). -

For more information, please contact [email protected]. 1 Natalie Carrier Dr. Mathews ANTH/ARTH 3335 20 Nov 2018 Jaina Figures and the Figuration of Maya Social Roles: A Study of SAMA Object 64.289.94 2 Abstract The site of Jaina island, for which Jaina figures are named, is unique in comparison to the sites where other Maya ceramic figurines have been found due to the scale and specially developed burial culture involving ceramic figurines that developed there (McVicker 2011: 211). The exceptional and artistic renderings and context for these figures from Campeche, Mexico has led to problems of looting and forgeries that have created obstacles for scholars trying to understand this body of work. A careful consideration of the stylistic features and grouping of individual figurines to determine their authenticity and meaning is therefore a step that can be undertaken to attempt to chip away at this problem. -

CHAPTER 9 The BilimekPulqueVessel:Starlore, Calendrics,andCosmologyof LatePostclassicCentralMexico The Bilimek Vessel of the Museum für Völkerkunde in Vienna is a tour de force of Aztec lapidary art (Figure 1). Carved in dark-green phyllite, the vessel is covered with complex iconographic scenes. Eduard Seler (1902, 1902-1923:2:913-952) was the first to interpret its a function and iconographic significance, noting that the imagery concerns the beverage pulque, or octli, the fermented juice of the maguey. In his pioneering analysis, Seler discussed many of the more esoteric aspects of the cult of pulque in ancient highland Mexico. In this study, I address the significance of pulque in Aztec mythology, cosmology, and calendrics and note that the Bilimek Vessel is a powerful period-ending statement pertaining to star gods of the night sky, cosmic battle, and the completion of the Aztec 52-year cycle. The Iconography of the Bilimek Vessel The most prominent element on the Bilimek Vessel is the large head projecting from the side of the vase (Figure 2a). Noting the bone jaw and fringe of malinalli grass hair, Seler (1902-1923:2:916) suggested that the head represents the day sign Malinalli, which for the b Aztec frequently appears as a skeletal head with malinalli hair (Figure 2b).
