With its 6 lens elements arranged strictly symmetrically around the aperture in 4 groups, it has the same optical design. Its extremely com- pact mechanical construction also corresponds to the original. Unlike this, however, the current model is equipped with the M bayonet including 6 bit code. Furthermore, various external details have been adapted to the appearance of the current M lenses, for example the shape of the focus unlock button, the diameter of the aperture ring and the knurling. Even when fully open, the lens is characterized by high-contrast rendering in large areas of the field of view. Stopping down to 11 greatly improves the imaging performance in the corners of the picture. Although stopping down further enhances the picture corners even more, this is at the expense of the overall contrast, i.e. the imaging performance is more even overall. When the aperture is open, vignetting is max., i.e. in the image corners, approx. 2.5 aperture stages. By stopping down to 8 vignetting can be reduced to approx. 1.8 aperture stages. Distortion is negligible. Summary: Due to its imaging properties and its focal length, the new edition of the Leica Summaron 28 mm f/5.6 is suitable for quick and discreet photography, in other words spontaneous snapshots. Its extremely small dimen - sions together with the camera make an extremely manageable unit that is easy to carry. The relative distortion is the percentage 60 deviation.1 The ideal image height results from the object height and the magnification. The image height of 21.6 mm is the radial distance between0 the edge and the middle of the image field for the format 24 mm x 36 mm. The graph of the effective distortion illustrates the appearance of straight horizontal and vertical lines in the picture. 40 -1 VIGNETTING Vignetting-2 is a continous decrease of the illumination to the edges of the image field. The graph shows the percentage loss of illumination over the image height. 100% means no vignetting. 20 -3 -4 0 -5 0 3 6 9 12 15 18 21 0 3 6 9 12 15 18 21 Page 4 of 6 I As at July 2016 I Specifications are subject to change without notice Y' [mm] Leica Camera AG I Am Leitz-Park 5 I 35578 WETZLARY'[mm] I GERMANY I Telephone +49(0)6441-2080-0 I Fax +49(0)6441-2080-333 I www.leica-camera.com Blende 11.0 Effektive Verzeichnung [%] 100 Y'[mm] 80 12 60 9 40 6 20 3 0 0 0 3 6 9 12 15 18 21 0 3 6 9 12 15 18 Y'[mm] X'[mm] LEICA SUMMARON-M 28 mm f/5.6 DEPTH OF FIELD table ApertureAperture Stop Stop MagnificationMagnification Aperture Stop Magnification 5.65.6 8.08.0 11.011.0 16.0 22.022.0 5.6 8.0 11.0 16.0 22.0 11 0.819 0.819 - 1.290 - 1.290 0.765 0.765 - - 1.457 1.457 0.704 0.704 - - 1.763 1.763 0.622 - - 2.729 2.729 0.546 0.546 - - 8.185 8.185 1/33.4 1/33.4 1 0.819 - 1.290 0.765 - 1.457 0.704 - 1.763 0.622 - 2.729 0.546 - 8.185 1/33.4 1.11.1 0.884 0.884 - 1.464 - 1.464 0.821 0.821 - - 1.685 1.685 0.750 0.750 - - 2.111 2.111 0.657 - - 3.680 3.680 0.573 0.573 - - 38.45 38.45 1/36.9 1/36.9 1.1 0.884 - 1.464 0.821 - 1.685 0.750 - 2.111 0.657 - 3.680 0.573 - 38.45 1/36.9 1.21.2 0.946 0.946 - 1.649 - 1.649 0.874 0.874 - - 1.937 1.937 0.794 0.794 - - 2.527 2.527 0.690 - - 5.186 5.186 0.598 0.598 - - ∞ ∞ 1/40.5 1/40.5 1.2 0.946 - 1.649 0.874 - 1.937 0.794 - 2.527 0.690 - 5.186 0.598 - ∞ 1/40.5 1.51.5 1.120 1.120 - 2.287 - 2.287 1.020 1.020 - - 2.889 2.889 0.912 0.912 - - 4.457 4.457 0.776 - - 51.98 51.98 0.660 0.660 - - ∞ ∞ 1/51.1 1/51.1 1.5 1.120 - 2.287 1.020 - 2.889 0.912 - 4.457 0.776 - 51.98 0.660 - ∞ 1/51.1 1.71.7 1.226 1.226 - 2.796 - 2.796 1.106 1.106 - - 3.757 3.757 0.980 0.980 - - 6.958 6.958 0.824 - - ∞ ∞ 0.694 0.694 - - ∞ ∞ 1/58.2 1/58.2 1.72 1.226 1.373 - 2.796 - 3.730 1.106 1.223 - - 3.757 5.678 0.980 1.070 - - 6.958 18.87 0.824 0.886 - ∞ ∞ 0.736 0.694 - - ∞ ∞ 1/68.8 1/58.2 2 1.373 - 3.730 1.223 - 5.678 1.070 - 18.87 0.886 - ∞ 0.736 - ∞ 1/68.8 22.5 1.373 1.587 - 3.730 - 6.001 1.223 1.390 - - 5.678 13.50 1.070 1.194 - - 18.87 ∞ 0.886 0.968 - ∞ ∞ 0.791 0.736 - - ∞ ∞ 1/86.5 1/68.8 2.5 1.587 - 6.001 1.390 - 13.50 1.194 - ∞ 0.968 - ∞ 0.791 - ∞ 1/86.5 2.53 1.587 1.772 - 6.001 - 10.10 1.390 1.529 - - 13.50 164.7 1.194 1.294 - - ∞ ∞ 0.968 1.032 - ∞ ∞ 0.833 0.791 - - ∞ ∞ 1/104.2 1/86.5 3 1.772 - 10.10 1.529 - 164.7 1.294 - ∞ 1.032 - ∞ 0.833 - ∞ 1/104.2 Distance Setting [m] 5 2.310 - ∞ 1.910 - ∞ 1.555 - ∞ 1.190 - ∞ 0.931 - ∞ 1/175.1 Distance Setting [m] 3 1.772 - 10.10 1.529 - 164.7 1.294 - ∞ 1.032 - ∞ 0.833 - ∞ 1/104.2 5 2.310 - ∞ 1.910 - ∞ 1.555 - ∞ 1.190 - ∞ 0.931 - ∞ 1/175.1 Distance Setting [m] 57 2.310 2.656 - - ∞ ∞ 1.910 2.139 - - ∞ ∞ 1.555 1.702 - - ∞ ∞ 1.190 1.273 - ∞ ∞ 0.980 0.931 - - ∞ ∞ 1/246 1/175.1 710 2.656 2.991 - - ∞ ∞ 2.139 2.351 - - ∞ ∞ 1.702 1.832 - - ∞ ∞ 1.2731.343 - - ∞ ∞ 1.021 0.980 - - ∞ ∞ 1/352.2 1/246 7 2.656 - ∞ 2.139 - ∞ 1.702 - ∞ 1.273 - ∞ 0.980 - ∞ 1/246 1020 2.991 3.508 - - ∞ ∞ 2.351 2.657 - - ∞ ∞ 1.832 2.011 - - ∞ ∞ 1.3431.436 - - ∞ ∞ 1.073 1.021 - - ∞ ∞ 1/706.5 1/352.2 1020∞ 2.9913.508 4.242 - - ∞ ∞ 2.3512.657 3.054 - - ∞ ∞ 1.8322.011 2.230 - - ∞ ∞ 1.3431.436 1.542 - - ∞ ∞ 1.130 1.0211.073

  • Cfkug M2 for Photographic Perfection the LEICA M 2 Captures Every Photographic Situation Swiftly and Surely
111-37d/Engl. l cfkug M2 for photographic perfection The LEICA M 2 captures every photographic situation swiftly and surely. Its unsurpassed range viewfinder enables even the beginner to focus easily, rapidly, and with unerring accuracy, regardless of the existing lighting conditions. The brilliantly illuminated focal frames for the 35-, 50- and 90 mm lenses are automatically parallax-compensated at all focusing distances. Inserting anyone of these three prime picture-makers into the LEICA M 2's quick-change bayonet lens-mount automat ically brings the correct frame into the viewfinder, and a preselector lever is provided so that the user can determine the effect of these three focal lengths without actually changing lenses. Accurate exposure setting is ensured by the accessory LEICAMETER MC which couples to the camera's non spinning shutter-speed selector dial. Sturdily constructed and easy to use, the LEICA M 2 combines traditional LEITZ precision, rugged ness and reliability with almost unbelievable versatility. The VISOFLEX II, a key part of the LEICA SYSTEM offers the additional possibility of reflex groundglass focusing and viewing with focal lengths from 65- through 400 mm, and a number of LEICA lenses may actually be used with both rangefinder and reflex focusing. For further details please request our brochure No. 111-40 I describing the VISOFLEX II and Na. 111-341 about the full range of Leica lenses. • 60 Years of Photographic Excellence
LEICA 60 YEARS OF PHOTOGRAPHIC EXCELLENCE 1st prototype Oscar Barnack (1879-1936), researcher at the Leitz’s factory of Wetzlar, develops a prototype of photographic camera, using 35 mm cinema film. Use of this film, in a reduced format of 24 x 36 1913 mm, allows Barnack to imagine a very compact camera for that period. This camera has a single achromatic lens and no shutter. At the end of WWI, Oscar Barnack restarts his project of compact LEICA pilot production camera. He improves its concept and its ergonomics by having the idea to link together film advance with the reload mechanism of the shutter. 1923 Barnack asks Max Berek (1886-1949) to develop a small size lens able to be adapted on his camera. Then, Berek creates the famous Elmar 1:3.5 f=50 mm. The Leitz company decides to produce a pilot production of 6 cameras named LEICA (contraction of LEItz and CAmera). Official commercialization of the LEICA, equipped with the Elmar 1:3.5 f=50 mm, starts this year. These starts are laborious as people, probably accustomed to large negative format, remain distant from the smallness of the 24 x 36 mm format. LEICA I But soon, the outstanding quality and the compactness of this camera make this one receives the plebiscite of photographers. The small dimensions of this camera make its very discreet, 1925 allowing illustrated reports without people’s knowledge. Characteristics of the LEICA I are the following : • Focal shutter • Speeds from 1/20 to 1/500 of second and B • Lens Elmar 1:3.5 f=50 mm • Galilean viewfinder (and later on, removable rangefinder mounted on a special stand).

Press I nformation Uniquely aesthetic photography: Leica Camera AG presents a modern renaissance of the classic lens – the Leica Thambar-M 1:2.2/90 Wetzlar, 17 October 2017. A legend reborn: following the Leica Summaron-M 1:5.6/28, Leica Camera AG has further expanded its lens portfolio with the Thambar-M 1:2.2/90, the modern renaissance of another classic lens. Just like its namesake from 1935, the contemporary incarnation of the lens is distinguished by its characteristic soft-focus effect and unmistakeable bokeh. Its focal length of 90 mm is suitable for photography in a multitude of scenarios and is as good as predestined for capturing portraits with a uniquely aesthetic atmosphere that cannot be reproduced in digital postprocessing. The new Thambar-M is thus an exciting addition to the existing Leica M lens portfolio and brings photographers entirely new possibilities for creative composition. The optical design of its ancestor remains almost unchanged in the new Thambar-M 1:2.2/90. It has therefore also inherited the characteristic properties of its predecessor. The only difference is that the four elements in three groups that make up the design have now been single-coated to protect the glass against environmental influences and surface corrosion. The 20 blades of its iris deliver a unique bokeh with perfectly round rendition of point light sources. The soft look of the Thambar is the result of intentionally accepted under-correction of spherical aberration. This under-correction increases towards the edges of the optical system with the consequence that not only the depth of focus, but also the degree of softening can be precisely controlled by means of the stepless aperture setting.

  • Press Information
Press information Leica Camera AG presents three new design options in the Leica M-Lens portfolio. Wetzlar, 7 February 2019. Leica Camera AG presents new design versions of the Leica APO-Summicron-M 50 mm f/2 ASPH., Leica Summaron-M 28 mm f/5.6 and Leica Summilux- M 28 mm f/1.4 ASPH. lenses for the Leica M-System. The special series of the three lenses are distinguished by unique design highlights and are being offered in a limited number of examples. The performance and technical specifications of the lenses are otherwise identical to those of the serial production products. The new series of lenses includes a black chrome version of the APO-Summicron-M 50 mm f/2 ASPH. standard lens. In comparison to the serial production lens, this design alternative features a characteristically scalloped focusing ring that recalls the appearance of the Summicron 50 mm f/2 (II) from 1956. The components of the barrel of this special series are machined from brass. The engravings for the focal length and the distances in feet are picked out in red. The lens is supplied complete with a classic, round brass lens hood engraved with ‘Made in Germany’ and a lens cap turned from solid brass. The edition of the lens in this design version is strictly limited to 700 examples. The APO-Summicron-M 50 mm f/2 ASPH. in black chrome is available from 21 February. The second special series presents a version of the Leica Summaron-M 28 mm f/5.6 in matt black paint finish, a lens from the classic line-up of Leica M-Lenses.
