Without technical competence, museums are dull, uninteresting places. Loving something you know very little about, is also dull, and inconsiderate. So I decided to explain Leica’s design for those who wish to get to know more about its history. I am not so worried to face lack of technical background among readers because Leica fans have been self enthused to know more about opto-me- chanics. In future volumes, I hope to cover Leica lenses, the SLRs, and accessories. This book will take you a bit farther than prior art to appreciate the Leica design with more passion. If you look at history of invention, you may find it rather cruel: Most of what we create is treated like foot prints on a shore, waiting for quick waves to wash them away.

The focus of Leica’s appearance at photokina 2018 in Cologne is not only set on the extremely diverse product portfolio of the traditional manufacturer from Wetzlar, but also on the Leitz Park itself. At Leica, everything has always revolved around the picture, the school of visualisation, the history of photography, the vibrancy of photographic culture and the people behind the cameras – in other words, DAS WESENTLICHE. Since the opening of the Leitz Park complex on 15 June 2018, all this is now a visible and tangible experience. In the open-plan, newly conceived Leica stand in Hall 2.2, visitors can find information and comprehensive advice about the broad spectrum of Leica products and services for all photographic applications and scenarios. The demonstration area has now been split into thematic areas to provide easier orientation for professionals, amateurs and other visitors interested in particular Leica products or services. While the ‘Professional’ area concentrates on the Leica S and its lenses and products from Sinar Photography, the ‘Systems’ area focuses on the Leica SL, the Leica M and the APS-C cameras of the Leica CL and Leica TL systems – and, of course, the full range of corresponding Leica precision lenses.     Press information Limited special edition for the 100th anniversary: The Leica CL ‘100 jahre bauhaus ’ Wetzlar, 17 May 2019 . Leica Camera AG celebrates the 100th anniversary of the Bauhaus with a special edition of the Leica CL ‘100 jahre bauhaus’. The set comprises a silver version of the Leica CL, a matching Elmarit-TL 18 mm f/2.8 ASPH. lens in silver and a carrying strap. The leather trim of the camera and the carrying strap are embossed with the Bauhaus logotype. This was created in 1929 by Joost Schmidt, one of the earliest students of the school, who defined the distinctive typography of the Bauhaus more than any other, for the title of the quarterly magazine of the same name. A further special feature of the Leica CL ‘100 jahre bauhaus’ is the restrained execution of the Leica logo in black on the camera body. Together with the subtle Bauhaus-embossing, the special edition ideally reflects the concept of plain and simple design advocated by the Bauhaus school in accordance with the principles of ‘form follows function’. The Leica CL ‘100 jahre bauhaus’ is on sale from 27 May. The edition is strictly limited to only 150 examples. The Leica CL is a synthesis of iconic design and advanced camera technology.
