Visual Arts Undergrad Information Director of Undergraduate Studies: Nicola López; [email protected] Visual Arts Program Assistant: Claire Valdez [email protected] Departmental Office: 310 Dodge; 212-854-4065 The Visual Arts Program in the School of the Arts offers studio art classes as a component of a liberal arts education and as a means to an art major, concentration or joint major with the Art History and Archeology Department. Columbia College (the undergraduate university) offers a liberal arts BA, with a required core curriculum. Students can usually select majors and concentrations (aka minors) after their sophomore year. Registration Visual Arts courses are currently closed for registration on SSOL (https://ssol.columbia.edu/); if you are interested in taking one of our classes, please add your name to the waitlist of the course and attend the first day of the class via zoom as available spaces will be given to students who are virtually present. Zoom attendance on the first two days of class is required of any student wishing to take a course; students who do not attend the first two days of class of any course forfeit their position on the roster. They are listed in the fall semester as Senior Thesis I (for 2-points) and Visiting Critic I (for 2-points), and in the spring semester as Senior Thesis II (for 2-points) and Visiting Critic II (for 2-points). Please note that each semester, Senior Thesis and Visiting Critic run concurrently as one class taught by two faculty members. This class is designed to support each student as they establish a vibrant and sustainable studio practice, laying foundations that will allow them to continue to flourish as artists or working in related fields beyond their time here at Columbia. Before entering into Senior Thesis, it is strongly advised that majors have completed 18 points of required Visual Arts Program courses. Visual arts majors must sign up for a portfolio review to apply for Senior Thesis entrance. When signing up, please review the Procedures for Gaining Admittance into Senior Thesis handout. Portfolios representing the work students have completed within the Visual Arts Program are evaluated by the director of undergraduate studies and a faculty committee. Following each semester of Senior Thesis, a faculty committee evaluates the student’s work and performance completed thus far. Seminar in Contemporary Art Practice New York City is the most abundant visual arts resource in the world. The class draws heavily on these resources and also utilizes readings and presentations to support students as they orient themselves and their own work within the rich landscape of contemporary visual arts. Students encounter a broad cross-section of art and are encouraged to develop ideas about what they are exposed to. The seminar is led by a practicing artist and utilizes this perspective. Majors should plan on taking this required seminar during their junior year. Visiting Artist Lecture Series (VALS) The Visiting Artist Lecture Series is a weekly lecture organized by students in the Visual Arts MFA Program. Lectures are given by working artists, critics, and curators, and are held via Zoom and sometimes possibly in Prentis Hall room 101, Tuesdays 6:30 - 8:00 p.m. while observing low density requirements. Undergraduate Visual Arts majors are welcome to attend these lectures. If you have any questions please contact the Director of Undergraduate Studies: Nicola López; [email protected]. Visual Arts Curriculum 2020-21 Please Note: Visual Arts courses are currently closed for registration. If you are interested in taking a Visual Arts class, please add your name to the waitlist of the course and attend the first day of the class. As announced by the President of Columbia University, the 2020-2021 academic year will comprise of three trimesters: Fall 2020, Spring 2021, and Summer 2021. This page provides an overview of the VIAR course offerings for all three terms, to help students make decisions and plans for the academic year ahead. Please note that this schedule may be subject to change, and students are encouraged not only to revisit this page but also to confirm the course listings in the online Directory of Classes and Vergil, where course descriptions and class meeting times will be posted as soon as they are available. In addition to semester-long (14-week) course offerings, the Visual Arts program may offer 6-week “immersive courses.” These courses will cover a semester’s worth of material in a shorter period of time and will meet for twice as many hours per week, allowing more contact between faculty and students and more sustained focus on the class content. They will be offered in either the first half of a semester (e.g., Fall A, Spring A, Summer A) or in the second half of a semester (e.g., Fall B, Spring B, Summer B). Please note that curriculum plans are subject to change. The most current information is available in the Directory of Classes. If the course is listed as Hybrid, the instructor of the course will share their plans for in-person and online teaching on the first day of class. Students who are working off-campus are welcome into this course also; learning online will be an integral part of the course and it will be possible to complete the course through exclusively online participation.     Mina Cheon CV 2021 Mina Cheon (천민정) (b. 1973 in Seoul, South Korea; lives and works in Baltimore, New York, and Seoul) Mina Cheon is a new media artist, sCholar, eduCator, and activist best known for her “Polipop” paintings inspired by Pop art and Social Realism. Cheon’s practice draws inspiration from the partition of the Korean peninsula, exemplified by her parallel body of work created under her North Korean alter ego, Kim Il Soon, in which she enlists a range of mediums inCluding painting, sCulpture, video, installation, and performanCe to deConstruCt and reConCile the fraught history and ongoing coexistence between North and South Korea. She has exhibited internationally, including at the Busan Biennale (2018); Baltimore Museum of Art (2018); American University Museum at the Katzen Arts Center, Washington, DC (2014); Sungkok Art Museum, Seoul (2012); and Insa Art SpaCe, Seoul (2005).     The Museum of Modern Art For Immediate Release March 1987 DRAWINGS ACQUISITIONS Through May 26, 1987 A new installation at The Museum of Modern Art features seventy-one works on paper acquired since 1981. During this period, 554 works by 217 artists entered the collection. Organized by John Elderfield, director of the Department of Drawings, the current installation reveals the rich growth of the collection over the past six years. Among the highlights of early modern drawings in the installation are Piet Mondrian's Amstel River (1907), a large, dramatic, preabstract work that combines a Symbolist mood with an already strong sense of geometric structure, and Giorgio de Chirico's Solitude (1917), widely considered to be probably the greatest of his metaphysical drawings. Three recently acquired works on paper by Pablo Picasso include the monumental Two Nudes (1906), a study for the Museum's painting of that subject; the rigorously abstract, Cubist Guitar (1912); and the beautiful pastel, Woman in a Flowered Hat (1921). Other major Cubist works include Fernand Leger's Contrast of Forms (1912) and Juan Gris's collage, Glass and Bottle (1913), and two drawings by sculptor Julio Gonzalez. The Museum's representation of Futurism has been enhanced by the addition of Carlo Carra's charcoal drawing, Cafe Chantant (1912), and works by Giacomo Balla and F.T. Marinetti (the latter represented in the collection for the first time). Early British modernism is exemplified by David Bomberg's early abstraction, study for In the Hold (1913), and works by William Roberts and C.R.W. Nevinson (first time representation).

    Gregory Amenoff | Biography Gregory Amenoff (b. 1948) is a painter who lives in New York and New Mexico. He is the recipient of numerous awards from organizations including the American Academy of Arts and Letters, National Endowment for the Arts, New York State Council on the Arts and Tiffany Foundation. He has had over fifty one-person exhibitions in museums and galleries throughout the United States and Europe. His work is in the permanent collections of more than thirty museums, including the Whitney Museum of America Art, the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, the Museum of Modern Art in New York and the Metropolitan Museum of Art. He served as President of the National Academy of Design from 2001-2005. He serves on the Board of Directors of the CUE Art Foundation and as the Foundation Curator Governor. Amenoff has taught at Columbia for the last fifteen years, where he held the Eve and Herman Gelman Chair of Visual Arts until 2013.     About the Artists Studio K.O.S. is a collective of artists who are continuing the legacy of Tim Rollins and the Kids of Survival (K.O.S.), whose collaborative approach to making art began in the Bronx in the 1980’s. What was manifested from their collaborations became a powerful body of work that can be seen today in over 120 museums and public collections worldwide including MoMA, The Tate Modern and The Art Institute of Chicago. Studio K.O.S. currently consists of Angel Abreu, Jorge Abreu, Robert Branch, and Nelson Ricardo Savinon, original members who have remained active for over 30 years. They remain dedicated to the mission of empowering young people through exposure to art and literature. Angel Abreu (b. 1974, Bronx, NY) Abreu is an artist, writer and educator who studied philosophy, art history and comparative literature at the University of Pennsylvania and New York University. Abreu joined Tim Rollins and K.O.S. in 1986. In addition to his work with K.O.S., he has developed his own practice based on a study of American Pragmatism as well as American literature. Abreu is on faculty in both the BFA Fine Arts and MFA Art Practice departments of the School of Visual Arts in New York City. He also serves on the Education Committee of The Bronx Museum of the Arts in The Bronx, NY. In addition, Abreu is so proud to be the 20'-21' Wallace Wilson Fellow at his alma mater Deerfield Academy in Deerfield, MA. Jorge Abreu (b. 1979, Bronx, NY) Abreu studied English at Bard College.
