We are so glad you have joined us to celebrate the power of music to make social change. Each of the first three SONGS OF PROTEST events, starting in April of 2017, was presented to sold-out audiences in our Rockland, NY community. This latest concert, was supposed to have taken place in-person on April 6th, 2020. We had the performer lineup and songs already chosen when we had to halt the entire season due to the pandemic. As in SONGS OF PROTEST 1, 2 & 3, we had planned to present an evening filled with amazing performers and powerful songs that have had a historical impact on social justice. When we decided to resume the series virtually, we rethought the concept. With so much going on in our country and the world, we offered the performers the opportunity to write or present an original work about an issue from our current state of affairs.

Reunion: a Portrait of Jim Lauderdale at Exit/In on the Venue's 43Rd
Burr / Reunion / !1 Reunion For Versatile Veteran, Heart’s Where the Home Is Jim Lauderdale sidles onto the stage at Exit/In, his broad smile and spangled garb shimmering alike as the sparse crowd gathered at his feet whistles and hoots. Their ogling of the long-haired, guitar-wielding man before them invites a half-baked comparison to traveling salesmen settling in for a highway-exit lap dance and the subsequent allaying of the day’s harsh impotence, an inchoate inkling which is put on ice after one peripheral glance at the milieu and Jim’s lack of nipple pasties. For a 43rd anniversary concert — the venue’s, not the performer’s, though Jim has swum circles around the clubs and back-alleys of New York’s and Nashville’s music scenes for near as long — the turnout is scant, a reality only partially shrouded by the effusive reception showered on Jim by the group of loyalists in attendance. “How are y’all doing?” Lauderdale asks the crowd. Helen of Troy he is not — his hair girds a visage which, especially around his glinting eyes, betrays the passage of time like a just- overripe peach — but tonight, he is the one who launches a storied conduit into the future’s belligerent uncertainty. “Glad you could make it out tonight,” said Lauderdale. “It’s good to be back for the birthday celebration.” From here, Jim knows the drill. * * * Exit/In was opened in 1971 by Owsley Manier and Brugh Reynolds; as noted by the venue’s website, it is “one old, dark, loud piece of Nashville rock stuck right in the middle of the Burr / Reunion / !2 Music City,” a history-steeped mainstay amidst a countrified minefield of melodic glories and discordant despairs.

CHRIS KNIGHT Almost Daylight “It’s hard to know how people are gonna react,” Chris Knight says of Almost Daylight, his ninth album and first new recording in over seven years. “I’ve written songs about a lot of different things going all the way back to my first record, and some folks still think ‘somebody kills somebody’ is all I write about. The Turtles sued because Sirius XM has taken the position that it doesn’t need permission — and therefore doesn’t need to pay for use of — pre-1972 recordings protected under state law, even though it does pay for post-1972 recordings that are protected by federal law. This relates to an issue that SoundExchange has long been fighting — the failure of some large digital radio services to pay for the use of such vintage recordings. We think Sirius XM’s position is wrong as a matter of law, and definitely wrong as a matter of justice! The California federal court agreed with our view of the law and sided with The Turtles in their lawsuit. JAMES RAE “JIM” DENNY (1911•1963) Music publisher, booking agent, long•time manager of the Grand Ole Opry, and promoter of Nashville’s music industry, was born in Buffalo Valley, Putnam County, TN. As a young man, Denny found work as a mail clerk with the National Life and Accident Insurance Company, parent organization to WSM and the Grand Ole Opry. With growing interest in country music, Denny was running the WSM Artists Service Bureau by 1946, booking Opry talent and other WSM acts. Denny eventually managed the Grand Ole Opry itself. Denny, along with his predecessor, Jack Stapp, is responsible for updating the face of the Opry. As promoters and developers of talent, they helped to transform the Opry from a popular barn dance to a showcase of country superstars, ensuring its growth and long•term success. During their tenure, the cast grew enormously, most major stars became Opry members, and an Opry appearance became a must goal for many performers. In 1954 Denny and Opry star Webb Pierce formed Cedarwood Publishing Company, for a time the most important publishing house in Nashville. Driftwood Music, a companion firm, was a partnership between Denny and Carl Smith, another Opry star. These business interests led to conflict of interest allegations by WSM and eventually Denny’s dismissal. With his knowledge of WSM operations, Denny achieved immediate success as a booking agent. The Jim Denny Bureau served most of the artists Denny had signed while at the Opry. Billboard magazine estimated that, by 1961, the bureau was handling over 3,300 personal appearances worldwide.

PACKAGED WRIGHT Michelle Wright's image consultants helped her get Nashville's attention. Now if they could only find her a hit... By David Hayes, Saturday Night, June 1995 Gently downshifting her brand-new black Mercedes E420 sedan, Michelle Wright eases off I-65 South at the Franklin exit and drives past fast-food outlets and rolling fields while a country station plays on the radio. When you've made it in country music, you live in Franklin, a tidy suburb forty minutes from Nashville's Music Row where stars such as Dolly Parton and Wynonna Judd own mansions and estates. It's also where Wright, Canada's top female country singer, recently bought a five-bedroom home, although hers is one of many lookalikes in a newly built, middle-class subdivision. Still, both the car -- which recently replaced her clunky old Ford Escort -- and the house are material symbols of Wright's progress in the country-music major leagues, a far cry from the life of a struggling newcomer. At her house, Wright disappears into her bedroom while her longtime manager, Brian Ferriman, and her image consultant, Joan Lacey, make themselves comfortable in the bright, high-ceilinged living room. The plan is to model several possible outfits for the upcoming Juno Awards, where Wright is both a presenter and a nominee. Considering how often she has been away on tour since the fall, it's not surprising Wright's house feels barely lived in, as though the interior designer arranged the furniture and hung the prints yesterday. A homey touch is provided by Wright's four cats, who pad matter-of-factly across the white broadloom.

You Don’t Know Me is a collection that finds the acclaimed stylist exploring the songs of such country legends as George Jones, Patsy Cline, Buck Owens and Eddy Arnold. The album might come as a surprise to those who associate Crystal with an uptown sound that made her a star on both country and adult-contemporary pop charts. But she has known this repertoire of hardcore country standards all her life. “This wasn’t a stretch at all,” says Crystal. “These are songs I grew up singing. I’ve been wanting to do this for a long time. “The songs on this album aren’t songs I sing in my concerts until recently. But they are very much a part of my history.” Each of the selections was chosen because it played a role in her musical development. Two of them point to the importance that her family had in bringing her to fame. You Don’t Know Me contains the first recorded trio vocal performance by Crystal with her singing sisters Loretta Lynn and Peggy Sue. It is their version of Dolly Parton’s “Put It Off Until Tomorrow.” “You Never Were Mine” comes from the pen of her older brother, Jay Lee Webb (1937-1996). The two were always close. Jay Lee was the oldest brother still living with the family when their father passed away.

Course description, class outline and syllabus Instructor: Peter Elman Title: “A Round-Trip Road Trip of Country Music, 1950-present: From Nashville to California to Texas--and back.” Course Description: An up close and personal look at the golden era of American country music, this class will explore key movements that contributed to the explosive growth of country music as an industry, art form and subculture. The first half of this course will focus on three major regions: Nashville, California and Texas, and concentrate on the period 1950-1975. The second half will look at the women of country, discuss the making of a country song and record, look at the work of five great songsmiths, visit the country music of the 1980’s, and end with an examination of Americana music. The course will do this through lectures, photographs, recorded music, film clips, question and answer sessions, and the use of live music.
