If you have accidentally deleted or replaced Windows 7 default fonts or experienced a lot of problems after installing new fonts, the best solution is to restore your Windows font folder to its default form following these steps: 1. Go to C:\Windows\Fonts or your own Windows drive and make sure you have deleted the fonts you don't wish to be there in case you have installed new unwanted fonts. If a message appears that "the font cannot be deleted because it's in use", click Organize on the upper left, then Layout, then uncheck Details pane and skip where the system couldn’t remove the fonts. 2. Download the default Font folder (.zip file, 182.57 MB). 3. Extract the content of that folder. 4. Select all the files in the extracted folder (ctrl+a). 5. Right click and select Install. Click Replace if the font already exists. How to Install Fonts in Windows 10. Windows 10 comes with an assortment of fonts installed with the operating system. But if you can't find a built-in font that suits a particular project, you can download a font from the web or the Microsoft Store and install the new font in Windows 10. Here's how to install fonts in Windows 10 and delete fonts you no longer need. How to Install a New Font to Windows 10 From the Microsoft Store. When you can't find the perfect font for your documents, search the Microsoft Store. The Microsoft Store offers several free fonts along with others that cost a nominal price. Here's how to search the Microsoft Store and add a font to Windows 10: Go to the Start menu and select Settings . Your computer must be connected to the internet before you begin. In the Settings window, select Personalization . Go to Fonts . Select Get more fonts in Microsoft Store . The Microsoft Store contains several free fonts and other fonts for a fee. Select Get . In the Use across your devices window, select either No thanks or Sign in to choose whether to use this font on all your devices. Wait while the font downloads and installs on your computer. When the download and installation are complete, a notification appears in the Windows Store. Close Windows Store . The new font appears at the top of the Available fonts list. How to Install a New Font from the Web. If you can't find a font you like in the Microsoft Store, download fonts from the web and install those font files in Windows 10. Windows can use several types of font files, including the TrueType Font (TTF) and OpenType Font (OTF) file formats. Before downloading a free font file, check for any use restrictions. Some free fonts are only for personal use. Find the font file you want to use. Download the font file to the Windows desktop. If the font file is contained in a ZIP file, you must extract the files before installing the font in Windows. Select Start > Settings > Personalization > Fonts . Resize the Settings window to show the Settings window and the downloaded font file on the desktop. Drag the font file from the desktop to the Drag and drop to install section of the Fonts Settings screen. The new font appears in the Available fonts list. If the font doesn't work as expected or an app doesn't recognize the font, there are several things you can do to troubleshoot font installations. How to Uninstall Fonts in Windows 10. When your computer has too many windows fonts, you may need to delete fonts to free up space on the hard drive. Here's how to delete fonts you no longer need. Go to Start > Settings > Personalization > Fonts . Select the font you want to remove. If you know the name of the font and don't want to scroll through the Available fonts list, enter the font name in the search box. Select Uninstall . The uninstalled font no longer appears in the Available fonts list. How to Download and Install New Fonts in Windows 10. Windows 10 comes with a lot of fonts pre-installed. However, there will be times, like when you are designing something or need a specific font to view a specific document, where you need to install additional fonts. Fortunately, Windows 10 makes it quite easy to install fonts. In fact, there are multiple ways to do it. Without further ado, let me show you how to download and install new fonts in Windows 10. Install Fonts from Microsoft Store. Microsoft Store has a dedicated page where you can download and install new fonts in Windows 10. One of the best things the store is that just as with the regular applications, you can install any font you want that is available in the store with just a single click. 1. First, open the Microsoft Store by searching for it in the start menu. You can also click on the Microsoft Store icon on the taskbar. 2. Once the store has been opened, search for “fonts” in the search bar and click on the “Fonts” option. This action will open the Fonts page in the Store app. 3. In the fonts page, find the font you want to install and click on it. In my case, I want to install Arial Nova font. So, I clicked on it. 4. Now, click on the “Get” button. 5. As soon as you click on the button, the Store page with get the necessary licenses, downloads, and installs the target font. 6. Once installed, you will see a notification telling you the same. 7. To verify, click on the Manage button in the store page and you will be taken to the Fonts page in the Settings app. Here, search for the font using the search bar and you should see the newly installed font. Drag and Drop Method. In the newer versions of Windows 10, i.e v1903 or higher, you can simply drag and drop the fonts in the settings app to install them. To install fonts in this way, follow the below steps and you should be good. Note: Before doing anything, make sure that you’ve already downloaded the font you want to install. You can download a variety of fonts for free from Google Fonts website. Also, you should be using Windows 10 version 1903 or higher. 1. If you’ve downloaded the fonts from the internet in a zip file then extract them to a folder on your desktop. In my case, I’ve downloaded Fira Sans font from the Google Fonts website. 2. Now, press Win + I to open the Settings app. In the Settings app, go to “Personalization -> Fonts” page. On the right panel, you will see a special section where you can drag and drop the fonts. 3. So, select all the fonts you want to install and simply drag and drop them into that special area. This action will automatically import and install the target fonts. 4. To verify, search for the font using the search bar and you should see the font(s) in the list. Install New Fonts in Windows 10 Via File Explorer. You can also install fonts in Windows 10 via the old fashioned way. i.e, using the file explorer’s context menu. 1. First, download the fonts you want to install and have them in a single folder. For instance, I’ve downloaded the Source Sans Pro from Google Fonts and extracted into a folder. 2. Now, select all the fonts in the folder, right-click on it and select “Install” or “Install for all users” option. Note: If you select “Install”, the font will be installed only for your user account. On the other hand, as the name suggests, “Install for all users” option will install the target font for all the users on your system. 3. As soon as you select the appropriate option, Windows will install the fonts. 4. To verify the font installation, go to the Fonts page in the Settings app and search for the font you just installed. That is all. It is that simple to install fonts in Windows 10. So, with that in mind, let’s take a look at the different ways you can install fonts on Windows 11. Installing fonts is a fairly straightforward process. Here are the three ways that you can do so: Method #01: Download and install from Microsoft Store Method #02: Download from the web and install manually Method #2.1: Install from Context menu using Install Method #2.2: From Font preview Method #2.3: Install from Settings (using drag and drop) Method #01: From Settings app Method #02: From Control Panel. It works fine on my Windows 7. However, I believe that the problem is caused by font substitution mechanism and perhaps on your system, you have some font that takes precendence for some glyphs, but does not contain other characters.

Impact case study (REF3b) Institution: University of Reading Unit of Assessment: 34B Art and Design: History, Practice and Theory - Typography Title of case study: Enriching communities of literacy: typographic support for world scripts 1. Summary of the impact Research by the University of Reading’s Department of Typography & Graphic Communication into the historical development of world scripts (predominantly South and Southeast Asian and Greek) and their adaptation to new technologies has had significant impact on global companies, including Adobe and Microsoft, supporting the use of non-Latin typefaces in their products as they enter new markets. The research has had additional impact on international type designers and manufacturers, Dalton Maag and Monotype, and on leading publishers such as Cambridge University Press and Brill. Commercial uptake of the research brings global societal benefits, with millions of people seeing typefaces in print and on digital displays that represent their scripts with linguistic, historic and typographic integrity. 2. Underpinning research The key researchers for this project were Gerry Leonidas (Senior Lecturer, 1998–present) Fiona Ross (Reader, 2003–present) Additional contributors were Dr Jo de Baerdemaeker (PhD student, 2005–9; Leverhulme research fellow 2011-13) and Titus Nemeth (PhD student, 2010–13). People’s access to digital communication systems depends on the correct representation of their language’s script (writing system) through typefaces (computer-based renditions of the letters of their script). The Department of Typography & Graphic Communication’s research has shown how the technological, corporate and cultural environments in which non-Latin typefaces have been made have influenced interpretation of the original underlying scripts.
