LAWSUIT Continued From 1A was 9 at the time. Tuesday afternoon, attor- neys for both sides met with Judge Mark Feagle to argue for and against toss- ing out Bencivenga’s defa- mation countersuit. Bencivenga alleges Sallie made false statements about him after a pack of dogs attacked her son near Northwest Casey Glen, according to a December 2018 court filing. The ongo- ing civil case started when Sallie filed a negligence suit against Bencivenga in October 2017. In his counterclaim, Bencivenga alleges Sallie’s “false and defamatory statements were included in an article of the Lake City Reporter which was published on September 21, 2017.” Sallie’s statements were “willfully furnished with malice or willful intent to injure” Bencivenga and “motivated by unreasonable financial gain,” according to the counterclaim. In September 2017, six of Bencivenga’s dogs were accused of attacking then- 9-year-old Wesley Green, Sallie’s son. Sallie and Bencivenga were neighbors at the time. Wesley was hospitalized with serious injuries after the dogs attacked him while he was outside helping prepare their home for Hurricane Irma, Sallie told the Lake City Reporter in 2017.

In the days leading up to his decision, Leonard had been com- municating with Paul George and asking him if he’d be willing to join him with the Clippers. That meant George would have to request a trade from the Oklahoma City Thunder, a fran- chise he had just committed to the summer before. But the chance to play with arguably the best player in the league was something George just couldn’t pass up. At nearly 2 a.m. Saturday morning, the Thunder traded George to the Clippers for a haul that includ- ed four unprotected first-round picks, one protected first-round pick and two pick swaps in addi- tion to Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Danilo Gallinari. Just like that, Leonard was a Clipper too, and the balance of power completely shifted in the league as a result. The Clippers also still have Lou Williams and Patrick Beverley and they’re the current betting favorite to win it all next season. But the Lakers brought aboard DeMarcus Cousins and Danny Green in addition to re-signing JaVale McGee and Rajon Rondo. You could put money on either team and I wouldn’t say you were wrong. Look, I have no idea who is going to win the title next season. It could be the Clippers or the Lakers while the Nets wait on Durant’s return, or it could be somebody else I haven’t even mentioned yet. The West is loaded beyond those two teams as well.
