White Fulfilled Compiled by F. C. GILBERT Author of "Practical Lessons," "From Judaism to Christianity" Good Tidings Press, South Lancaster, Massachusetts. COPYRIGHT, 1922, By F. C. GILBERT Printed by South Lancaster Printing Company U. S. A. DEDICATED TO THE PIONEERS WHOSE LOYALTY TO THE SPIRIT OF PROPHECY IS BEQUEATHED AS A LEGACY TO THE HOUSEHOLD OF FAITH BUT God bath chosen the foolish things of the world to confound the wise; and God bath chosen:the weak things of the world to con- found the things which are mighty. 1 Cor. 1: 27. APPRECIATION IN gathering matter for this work, the compiler found many who were in a position to render valuable assistance• God has spared several men who have had a broad ex- perience in connection with the many-phased predic- tions inspired by the breathings of God's divine Spirit through the human medium, Mrs. E. G. White ; and from their personal knowledge and close observation of the marvelous results seen in every direction of what was foreobserved, strength and force have been given to the experiences narrated. Elder J . Loughborough has rendered invaluable aid with suggestions, manuscripts, dates, and other en- deavors. Elder S. N. Haskell's efforts and narratives have contributed materially to particular sections of this work. Elder W. C. White, who has been so closely associated with his mother's life and work, stood ready to render every assistance. Elder G. B. Starr, who with his wife was privileged for many years to be in close identification with Mrs. White in labor and travel, has contributed very instructive material. Did space permit many other workers of scores and decades of years' contact with the life and labors of this wonderful chosen servant of God, would be mentioned, as they all have been kind and helpful in doing whatever was needed to speak or write or suggest. The book is now sent forth with an earnest and sin- cere prayer that God will bless these pages to His glory. F. C. GILBERT, Feb. 16, 7922. C. GILBERT INTRODUCTION Con has ever been the leader of His people. Since the beginning of the world, He has had direct charge of His work. There has been no time when He has dele- gated His power to another, yet he has used human in- strumentalities to carry out His wishes, and to convey to the people His will. That He has personally been leading in His work is clear from the word of God. It is written: "And thou shalt remember all the way which the Lord thy God led thee these forty years in the wilder- ness." Deut. 8 : 2. "Beware that thou forget not the Lord thy God, Who led thee through that great and terrible wilderness." Deut. 8: ii, is. "To Him which led His people through the wilderness; for His mercy endureth forever." Ps. 136: 16. "Also I brought you up from the land of Egypt, and led you forty years through the wilderness, to possess the land of the Amorite." Amos. 2: IO. He declares He has never given charge of His people to another; for the Lord says: "I am the Lord: that is my name: and my glory will I not give to another, neither my praise to graven im- ages." Isa. 42: 8. 14 DIVINE PREDICTIONS "Thus saith the Lord, thy Redeemer, the Holy One of Israel ; I am the Lord thy God which teacheth thee to profit, which leadeth thee by the way that thou should- est go." Isa. 48:17. He has chosen men and women to be His helping hands, the visible instruments to carry out His wishes, while He is personally in charge. The word of God declares: "But God led the people about, through the way of the wilderness of the Red Sea." Ex. 13: 18. "So Moses brought Israel from the Red Sea, and they went out into the wilderness of Shur." Ex. 15: 22. "For I brought thee up out of the land of Egypt, and redeemed thee out of the house, of servants ; and I sent before thee Moses, Aaron, and Miriam." Micah 6 : 4. "And it came to pass in the fortieth year, in the elev- enth month, on the first day of the month, that Moses spake unto the children of Israel, according unto all that the Lord had given him in commandment unto them." Deut. 1:3. While God in nowise restricted Himself to the per- sons He used as visible agencies to carry on His leader- ship, those individuals He selected as the chosen ones to convey His wishes were called "prophets" or messen- gers. "And the Lord hath sent unto you all His servants the prophets, rising early and sending them; but ye have not harkened, nor inclined your ear to hear." Jer. 25:4. "I have also spoken by the prophets, and I have mul- INTRODUCTION 15 eiplied visions, and used similitudes, by the ministry of the prophets." Hosea 12: 1o. "Yet the Lord testified against Israel, and against Judah, by all the prophets, and by all the seers, saying, Turn ye from your evil ways, and keep my command- ments and my statutes, according to all the law which I commanded your fathers, and which I sent to you by my servants the prophets." II Kings 17: 13. "Since the day that your fathers came forth out of the land of Egypt unto this day I have even sent unto you all my servants the prophets, daily rising up and sending them." Jer. 7:25. "And the Lord God of their fathers sent to them by His messengers, rising up betimes, and sending; because He had compassion on His people, and on His dwelling- place : "But they mocked the messengers of God, and de- spised His words, and misused His prophets." II Chron. 36:15, 16. There were times when the prophets were also called "seers." For instance: "Now the acts of David the king, first and last, behold they are written in the book of Samuel the seer, and in the book of Nathan the prophet, and in the book of Gad. the seer ." I 'Chron . 29 : 29. "For when David was up in the morning, the word of the Lord came unto the prophet Gad, David's seer, say- ing." II Sam. 24: II . "(Beforetime in Israel, when a man went to inquire of God, thus he spake, Come, and let us go to the seer : for 16 DIVINE PREDICTIONS he that is now called a Prophet was before time called a Seer.)" I Sam. 9: 9. The reason these prophets were called "seers" was because God revealed His plans to them ; and they told what they saw. They were therefore Heaven's eyes and mouth, to communicate God's wishes to men. When the Lord had a particular work on earth to be done, He chose this class of men and women to be His mouthpiece to convey to the people His message, and He laid the responsibility and burden of this special en- deavor upon the prophets. We find in the Bible a number of times when God sent messengers with special messages; and everlasting weal or eternal woe resulted from rejecting or receiving the message. To illustrate: 1. There was the experience of the antideluvians. God raised up Enoch and Noah to stem the tide of the world's pollution. If the people refused to heed the message, these godly messengers were to notify that generation that the race would be destroyed by a flood. The masses rejected the warning, with the result that God took Enoch to heaven, and Noah with his immediate family, the only believers after a hundred years of preaching, were saved from the destruction visited upon the world. Gen. 5 : 21-24; Jude 14, 15; Gen. 6 : 1-8 ; I Peter 3 : 20. 2. The time came when the Lord was to deliver Israel from Egypt. He selected Moses, Aaron, and Miriam as the leaders of that movement. Moses was the prophet who spake as the mouth of God ; and Pharaoh learned by INTRODUCTION 17 a series of sad experiences what a dreadful thing it was to disregard the light which the Lord sent him.

Ock&ti Trinity University Since the end of Erancisco Franco's dictatorship (1939-1975), Spain has transformed itself from an isolated, fascist state dominated by the promotion of hispanidad and national Catholicism (Corkill 49) to a country that hosts nearly 5.7 million international residents (Deveny, Migration 4). Pedro Almodovar, who began his film career at the time of Spain's transition to democracy, has steadily responded to the country's changes through his examination of identity, sexuality, repression, and desire (Acevedo-Muñoz 1—2). The director has distinguished himself partly by his continuous use of international music in his films, in a way that corresponds to Spain's development into a more tolerant, liberal, multicultural state (Kinder, "Pleasure" 37).

  • Fragments of the Past in Pedro Almodóvar's Broken
Palabras clave: Almodóvar, nostalgia, Baudrillard, flashback, Los abrazos rotos ABSTRACT: Pedro Almodóvar’s oeuvre encompasses a collection of themes and references to his own back catalogue, all the while referencing many other well-known directors. Broken Embraces (2009) refers to and re-enacts scenes from Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown (1988). Yet the references to the latter in Broken Embraces fail to enchant, instead creating a fragmentation of the past and ultimately shifting from a breakdown to being simply broken.
