Modernized text Pocket Hymn Book (1785)1 [Baker List, #438] Editorial Introduction: In 1780 John Wesley issued A Collection of Hymns for the People Called Methodists. This was the largest collection that he ever published (with 525 hymns), and Wesley clearly desired that it would become the standard text of his Methodist people for private use and in their society gatherings.2 One major obstacle stood in the way of this desire—the cost of the volume, at 4 shillings. It was in part because many of his people could not afford this cost that Wesley continued to reprint Select Hymns (1765), with editions in 1780, 1783, and 1787, which was less than a third the length of the 1780 Collection, and sold for 1 shilling, six pence. But Select Hymns did not mirror well the content of the 1780 Collection, lacking even such Methodist favourites as “O for a Thousand Tongues.” This created an opportunity for Robert Spence, a bookseller with Methodist connections in York , to offer another solution. In 1781 he published an abridgement of Wesley’s 1780 Collection, reducing it by two-thirds (to 174 hymns), while retaining the most popular hymns among Methodists.3 Spence took this step without approval, and drew Wesley’s displeasure.4 But since he was not an itinerant preacher, Spence was not accountable to injunctions by Conference against publishing materials without Wesley’s approval.5 While his 1781 publication had limited success, Spence reframed it in 1783 in two ways that greatly increased its popularity. First, he added about fifty hymns by other authors popular in evangelical circles. -

He chose his pen name after Czech poet Jan Neruda. Neruda wrote in a variety of styles such as erotically charged love poems as in his collection Twenty Poems of Love and a Song of Despair, surrealist poems, historical epics, and overtly political manifestos. In 1971 Neruda won the Nobel Prize for Literature. Colombian novelist Gabriel García Márquez once called him "the greatest poet of the 20th century in any language." Neruda always wrote in green ink as it was his personal color of hope. On July 15, 1945, at Pacaembu Stadium in São Paulo, Brazil, he read to 100,000 people in honor of Communist revolutionary leader Luís Carlos Prestes. During his lifetime, Neruda occupied many diplomatic positions and served a stint as a senator for the Chilean Communist Party. When Conservative Chilean President González Videla outlawed communism in Chile in 1948, a warrant was issued for Neruda's arrest. Friends hid him for months in a house basement in the Chilean port of Valparaíso. Later, Neruda escaped into exile through a mountain pass near Maihue Lake into Argentina. Years later, Neruda was a close collaborator to socialist President Salvador Allende. When Neruda returned to Chile after his Nobel Prize acceptance speech, Allende invited him to read at the Estadio Nacional before 70,000 people. -

The Tractarian Movement and, at an earlier period, the Methodist Revival, awakened emotions and left tastes and ten dencies which contributed largely to this outburst of the Churches into song. Roundell Palmer's Book Praise and Ancient and of ', Hymns Modern^ published in 1860, of which a million copies have been sold every year, are significant landmarks. This multiplication of Hymnals has naturally excited a new and keener curiosity regarding the makers and the historic associations of the Hymns and Psalms with which our lips have become so familiar. The present volume seeks to meet and guide this new takes of our choicest sacred curiosity ; some PREFACE. verse and endeavours to throw around it the living interest of curious origin, personal incident, and historic episode, which weave for us a veritable romance, the Romance of Sacred Piaise. -

II. that which we gain from our knowledge of what a human parent mayor ought to be." 1 The subject of the Lord's Prayer led the Bishop directly to a subject on which a great deal of angry feeling has been roused, especially among those who find satisfaction in the use of phrases which; whether capable of justification or not, can not be found in the formularies of the Church of England. The Bishop felt himself bound to maintain that reverence for the words of Christ Himself would withhold us from addressing prayer directly to Him. " Our Lord teaches us," he insisted, "to pray always to God, to God our Father-not to the Virgin OMary, not to the saints, as the Roman Catholics do-not even to Christ, as many Protestants do, departing thus from the direct teaching of Jesus Himself and the example of His apostles." I An examination of St Paul's epistles brought him to the conclusion that ec in not a single instance does St Paul pay worship to· Christ either by ascriptions of praise or by offering of prayer." 8 As an exposition of the actual practice of Christendom, the Bishop's sermon is unanswerable. That he wa~ justified in speaking as he spoke, the tone of modem dev~tion leaves little room for doubting. For altering the formularies of the Church of England there has been no opportunity; but the lack of this power has been to a large extent compensated by the introduction of hymns which, like the collection known as Hymns Ancient and Modern, contain, "Many expressions which," the Bishop says, "would have been utterly condemned by our Lord and His apostles, expressions in which not only is adoration paid to Jesus 1 Natal Sermons, II. -

Importance of Song! !Singing has always played an important part in the life of the Christian community.! ‘Singing, however simply, and even on one’s own, helps to deepen the worship. Singing can also unite a group or congregation, enriching their prayer and praise.’! !!!!!!!!Common Worship – Daily Prayer! Ephesians 5;19 ! …be filled with the Spirit, addressing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual !songs, singing and making melody to the Lord with all your heart…! Colossians 3;16! Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teach and admonish one another in all wisdom and sing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs with thankfulness in your hearts to God.! ! It is unclear exactly what the distinction was between psalms, hymns and spiritual songs; however, we do know that psalms were often sung antiphonally, spiritual !songs tended to be rather more spontaneous (look up jubilus).! !Old Testament references: ! Exodus 15! Then Moses and the people of Israel sang this song to the Lord: ‘I will sing to the !Lord, for he has triumphed gloriously…’! I Samuel 2;1-5 ! Hannah also prayed and said, ‘My heart exults in the Lord; my strength is exalted in !the Lord. My mouth derides the enemies; because I rejoice in thy salvation…’! What New Testament song does this remind you of?! ! What do both of these songs have in common?! ‘HYMN’: ! Augustine of Hippo's (354-430) definition was "a song containing praise of God"! ! From the rhythmic pattern of the Greek we can assume that a number of New Testament passages were hymns, or sections of hymns, which were well known to !the early Christians.! Read Philippians 2;6-11, and Colossians 1;15-20! Can you find any similar passages in Ephesians and 1 Timothy? ! !2.
