AN apology seems to be needed for adding another Hymn~ Book to those already in existence. The following con - siderations are therefore submitted to the reader. I. The primary requisite of a Hymn-Book designed for use in Public Worship, seems to be, that it should follow the guidance of the Church, and be adjusted to her Ritual. A Hymn-Book of the Church ought to represent the mind of the Church. It ought to show an intelligent approba tion of her intentions, and a dutiful submission to her appointments. In a word, a Hymn-Book of the Church of England ought to be a faithful companion to the Book of Common Prayer. 2. This idea of a Hymn-Book does not appear to have been as yet fully realized in this country, though happily considerable advances have been recently made towards its realization, especially by such publications as the Salisbury Hymn-Book, Hymns Ancient and Modern, and several others which will readily occur to the reader. In confir mation of this statement some evidence may be adduced. 3. In framing her Boox or COMMON PRAYER, the Church of England has endeavoured to dispense spiritual food to her vi Preface. people in due unson; that is, she designed to set before them the principal articles of Christian Faith and Practice in an orderly manner, so that each Season of her year, and almost every Sunday and Holyday throughout it, should teach its own appropriate lesson of doctrine and duty. We may illustrate this proposition by one or two ex amples, commencing with the first season of the Chris tian Year,-—that of AnvENT. 4.. On examining the portions of Holy Scripture.which the Church of England has appointed to be used on the Sundays in the season of Advent, and on"comparing them with those prescribed in the Ancient Liturgics of the West ern Church for that season, we find that the Church of England has carefully followed the order of the Early ‘ Church in this respect, and has engrafted into her own Oflice those parts of Holy Scripture which had been used from time immemorial at that period of the year. Those portions of Holy Scripture relate generally to the FmsT and SEcoND ADvnrT of Christ, and inculcate the duties consequent on the First Coming of Christ to save, and on His Second Coming to judge the world. But this is not all. The Ancient Church reminded her people, that Christ, Who came once to save, and Who will come again to judge, is now over coming to every mem ber of the Church. The Ancient Church taught that Christ is now war coming to every Christian in the following ways, viz. 1. In the Hofy Scriptures, which are His Word; and 2. That He is now over coming to every one, by those whom He has appointed to be Ministers of His Holy Word and Sacraments; and 3. That He is over coming to His faithful people in the times of their trials and distresses, to comfort and deliver them. Preface. vii This doctrine .of Christ’s continual coming to every Chris tian was ever present to the mind of the greatest Teachers of the Western Church 1, and is embodied in her Liturgies. Solomon says, “Give' instruction to a wise man, and he will be yet .wiser”; teach a just man, and he will in crease in learning." So it was with the Church of England. In the struc ture'of her religious oflices for the season of Advent, she followed the guidance of the Ancient Church; and, with reverence be it said, she improved upon it 3. She hap pily caught and appropriated the instructive and comfort able doctrine of Christ’s ferperual coming ,--— I. In Holy Scripture ; 7.. In the Ministry of the'Church; and 3. In critical times of trouble; and she gave greater clearness and prominence to that doctrine. She took good care that her people should not forget the great fundamental truth of Christ’s FmsT AnvENT to save, and of His SEcoNn Anvnrr to judge the world ; and therefore she set in the forefront of the season of Advent the collect, “Almighty God, give us grace that we may cast away the works of darkness, and put upon us the armour of light, now in the time of this mortal life in which Thy Son Jesus Christ came to visit us in great 1 See for example the admirable exposition in S. Wxmmwwmc "a . :2“. viii Preface. humility; that in the last day when He shall come again in His glorious majesty to judge both the quick and dead, we may rise to the life immortal thr'ough Him who liveth and reigneth with Thee and the Holy Ghost, now and ever. Amen." And she ordered that this collect should be repeated every day, together with the other collects in Advent, until Christmas Eve. Having thus secured the great doctrines of Christ’s FIRST ADvENT, which is past, and His SECOND ADvENT, which is fimm, she next provided for that of His continual taming, by which He is ever present,- and she exhorted her people to meditate on the three modes in which He is ewr coming to them ;— X. In Ho51 Scripture, 2. By the Christian Mnistry; 3. In and by trials and troubles : and is thus ever pre paring them for His future Second Coming to Judg ment. The first of these three modes of Christ’s Coming is brought before their eyes in the Second Sunday in Advent, by the Collect “ Blessed Lord, who hast caused all Holy Scriptures to be written for our learning;" and by the Epistle, “ Whatsoever things were written aforetime, were written /br our learning, that we through patience and com fort of the Scriptures might have hope." The second mode of Christ’s Coming is presented in the Collect {hr the Third Sunday in Advent, “ O Lord Jesu Christ, Who at Thy first coming didst send Thy Messenger to prepare Thy way before Thee, grant that the Mnimrs and Stewards of Thy mysteries may likewise so prepare and make ready Thy way;" and by the Epistle, “ Let a man so account of us as of the Ministers of can", and Stewards of the mysteries of God." The Church has also given greater emphasis to this doctrine of Christ’s continual Coming in His Mnimrs, by Preface. ix - connecting this Sunday with one of her four Ember Seam”, when she sets apart and sends forth persons to serve in the sacred Ministry of His Church. In the Collect for the Fourth Sunday in Advent we are comforted with the assurance, that, although “ through our manifold sins and wickedness we are sore let and hindered in running the race that is set before us," yet we may look for help and deliverance through Christ. “ O Lord, raise up, we pray Thee, Thy power, and come among us, and with great might succour us." And the Epistle reminds us that the Lord is ever “ at hand," and that therefore we need not be “ careful,"--or distracted by anxieties,—but that in every thing we should resort to God “ by prayer, and suppli cation with thanksgiving, and then the peace of God which passeth all understanding will keep our hearts and minds through Christ Jesus." A Church Hymn-Book ought to follow the leading of the Church. It ought to be adapted to her Services. The Hymn-Books which are now in common use in our churches, contain some excellent Hymns of a general character for the season of Advent ; but they do not profess to supply any Hymns of a special kind for the particular Sundays of that season. They do not refer to the thm .w'ueral modes just specified, in which Christ is over coming to His Church. This is a defect in our popular Hymnology. Whether it has in any degree been supplied in the present volume, is left to the judgment of the reader. That it ought to be supplied, no one, it may be presumed, can doubt. 5. Still further, all persons who have studied the early Christian Liturgies, and are conversant with the writings of Christian Antiquity, especially with the Homilies of the Fathers on the Seasons of the Church, will be thankful to Almighty God for the wisdom with which He endued her, “.W»,__'.-__WM ‘h w\~b 1 Preface.

    Modernized text Pocket Hymn Book (1785)1 [Baker List, #438] Editorial Introduction: In 1780 John Wesley issued A Collection of Hymns for the People Called Methodists. This was the largest collection that he ever published (with 525 hymns), and Wesley clearly desired that it would become the standard text of his Methodist people for private use and in their society gatherings.2 One major obstacle stood in the way of this desire—the cost of the volume, at 4 shillings. It was in part because many of his people could not afford this cost that Wesley continued to reprint Select Hymns (1765), with editions in 1780, 1783, and 1787, which was less than a third the length of the 1780 Collection, and sold for 1 shilling, six pence. But Select Hymns did not mirror well the content of the 1780 Collection, lacking even such Methodist favourites as “O for a Thousand Tongues.” This created an opportunity for Robert Spence, a bookseller with Methodist connections in York , to offer another solution. In 1781 he published an abridgement of Wesley’s 1780 Collection, reducing it by two-thirds (to 174 hymns), while retaining the most popular hymns among Methodists.3 Spence took this step without approval, and drew Wesley’s displeasure.4 But since he was not an itinerant preacher, Spence was not accountable to injunctions by Conference against publishing materials without Wesley’s approval.5 While his 1781 publication had limited success, Spence reframed it in 1783 in two ways that greatly increased its popularity. First, he added about fifty hymns by other authors popular in evangelical circles.

Neruda wrote in a variety of styles such as erotically charged love poems as in his collection Twenty Poems of Love and a Song of Despair, surrealist poems, historical epics, and overtly political manifestos. In 1971 Neruda won the Nobel Prize for Literature. Colombian novelist Gabriel García Márquez once called him "the greatest poet of the 20th century in any language." Neruda always wrote in green ink as it was his personal color of hope. On July 15, 1945, at Pacaembu Stadium in São Paulo, Brazil, he read to 100,000 people in honor of Communist revolutionary leader Luís Carlos Prestes. During his lifetime, Neruda occupied many diplomatic positions and served a stint as a senator for the Chilean Communist Party. When Conservative Chilean President González Videla outlawed communism in Chile in 1948, a warrant was issued for Neruda's arrest. Friends hid him for months in a house basement in the Chilean port of Valparaíso. Later, Neruda escaped into exile through a mountain pass near Maihue Lake into Argentina. Years later, Neruda was a close collaborator to socialist President Salvador Allende. When Neruda returned to Chile after his Nobel Prize acceptance speech, Allende invited him to read at the Estadio Nacional before 70,000 people.

PREFACE. r I ^HE past thirty years have witnessed the issue of a host of Hymnals, each having its own special feature or guiding purpose. The Tractarian Movement and, at an earlier period, the Methodist Revival, awakened emotions and left tastes and ten dencies which contributed largely to this outburst of the Churches into song. Roundell Palmer's Book Praise and Ancient and of ', Hymns Modern^ published in 1860, of which a million copies have been sold every year, are significant landmarks. This multiplication of Hymnals has naturally excited a new and keener curiosity regarding the makers and the historic associations of the Hymns and Psalms with which our lips have become so familiar. The present volume seeks to meet and guide this new takes of our choicest sacred curiosity ; some PREFACE. verse and endeavours to throw around it the living interest of curious origin, personal incident, and historic episode, which weave for us a veritable romance, the Romance of Sacred Piaise.

II. that which we gain from our knowledge of what a human parent mayor ought to be." 1 The subject of the Lord's Prayer led the Bishop directly to a subject on which a great deal of angry feeling has been roused, especially among those who find satisfaction in the use of phrases which; whether capable of justification or not, can­ not be found in the formularies of the Church of England. The Bishop felt himself bound to maintain that reverence for the words of Christ Himself would withhold us from addressing prayer directly to Him. " Our Lord teaches us," he insisted, "to pray always to God, to God our Father-not to the Virgin OMary, not to the saints, as the Roman Catholics do-not even to Christ, as many Protestants do, departing thus from the direct teaching of Jesus Himself and the example of His apostles." I An examination of St Paul's epistles brought him to the conclusion that ec in not a single instance does St Paul pay worship to· Christ either by ascriptions of praise or by offering of prayer." 8 As an exposition of the actual practice of Christendom, the Bishop's sermon is unanswerable. That he wa~ justified in speaking as he spoke, the tone of modem dev~tion leaves little room for doubting. For altering the formularies of the Church of England there has been no opportunity; but the lack of this power has been to a large extent compensated by the introduction of hymns which, like the collection known as Hymns Ancient and Modern, contain, "Many expressions which," the Bishop says, "would have been utterly condemned by our Lord and His apostles, expressions in which not only is adoration paid to Jesus 1 Natal Sermons, II.

This is an enormous !subject that will reward further study for which a list of books is provided at the end.! !1. Importance of Song! !Singing has always played an important part in the life of the Christian community.! ‘Singing, however simply, and even on one’s own, helps to deepen the worship. Singing can also unite a group or congregation, enriching their prayer and praise.’! !!!!!!!!Common Worship – Daily Prayer! Ephesians 5;19 ! …be filled with the Spirit, addressing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual !songs, singing and making melody to the Lord with all your heart…! Colossians 3;16! Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teach and admonish one another in all wisdom and sing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs with thankfulness in your hearts to God.! !
