Tyrrell 010/2 Description AB ! 1980 Tyrrell 010 Chassis No: 010/2 • A competitive and useable ground effect entry to the flourishing FIA Historic Formula One Championship, with a sister 010 taking eight wins so far this season. • Historian Allen Brown has confirmed that this car was the replacement 010/2 for Daly at the US GP in 1980. Driven in 1981 by Ricardo Zunino and Eddie Cheever, with a 4th place at the British Grand Prix for Cheever, before being sold by Tyrrell as a complete entity to Roy Lane. • HSCC Historic Formula 1 Champion with Richard Peacock in 1989. • In the current ownership for the last 20 years, with minimal use. The Tyrrell Racing Organisation is a name that rings out with some of the all time Formula 1 greats, with three Formula 1 World Championships and one Constructors Championship to its name. It’s founder, Ken Tyrrell first came into racing in 1958 when he ran three Formula 3 cars for himself and a couple of local stars. Ken soon realised that he was not destined to be a racing driver and stood down from driving duties in 1959, instead to focus on running a Formula Junior team from a woodshed owned by his family business, Tyrrell Brothers. Tyrrell ran a variety of cars in the lower formulas through the 1960s, giving drivers like John Surtees, Jacky Ickx and most notably Jackie Stewart their single seater debuts. In 1968, Tyrrell’s involvement with Matra in Formula 2 was stepped up to the main stage of Formula 1, where Ken ran Matra International, a joint venture between Tyrrell and Matra. For 1969, Tyrrell took a more independent team role, running Matra MS80s with Cosworth DFV engines rather than the Matra unit. More success followed with Stewart taking the 1969 World Championship in that stunning French Racing Blue machine. After an less successful 1970 season with the March 701, which Stewart described as “The most difficult F1 car I drove”, the decision was taken to build their own car. A decision that would path the way for the great success to come. Developed very much in secret, the Tyrrell 001 took the Formula 1 world by storm. Painted in what would become the teams trade mark French Racing Blue, designed by Derek Gardner and driven by Jackie Stewart and Francois Cevert, the Tyrrell 001 won both the drivers championship and the constructors Championship in its first year. Throught the 1970s the Tyrrell Racing Organisation enjoyed some massive highs with success on the track, claiming their third Drivers’ World Championship in 1973. They were also highly innovative as a manufacturer, with the iconic six wheeled P34 capturing the imagination of many when they were raced in 1976. T. + 44 (0)1285 831 488 E. [email protected] www.williamianson.com ! The Tyrrell 010 was Tyrrell’s latest ground effect car for the 1980 season. Designed by Maurice Philippe and once more powered by the proven and reliable Cosworth DFV engine, and utilised a Hewland FG gearbox, thus making for a very neatly packaged design. The 010 made its Grand Prix debut at the third round in the Formula 1 World Championship at Kyalami for the South African GP. For the first two rounds in Argentina and Brazil, the previous years 009s had been used while the final touches on the 010 were completed. With help from historian Allen Brown we can confirm that this car, chassis 010/2, was the last complete car with number 010/2. It was built as a new car after Daly’s crash at the Canadian Grand Prix, in September 1980. It is believed to have debuted at Watkins Glen for the US GP with Derek Daly on 5th October 1980. Tyrrell 010/2 went on to be raced during the first four rounds of the 1981, three times by Eddie Cheever and once by Ricardo Zunino, with Eddie Cheever taking 4th place for the team at the British Grand Prix. The ’81 spec 010 saw an extended roll hoop, and revised bodywork, featuring a moulded windscreen with mirrors and different side pods, before being replaced by the 011 in August ’81. The Tyrrell Racing Organisation also lost their Candy backing, the colourful livery being replaced with French Racing Blue once more. T. + 44 (0)1285 831 488 E. [email protected] www.williamianson.com ! 010/2 was bought directly from Tyrrell by Roy Lane who later sold it to Richard Peacock. 010/2 was then raced by Peacock in HSCC Historic Formula 1 races. Richard raced the car from 1987 to 1990 with great success, with a staggering six victories, three second place and one 3rd place, making him the 1989 HSCC Historic Formula 1 champion in 1989. He and 010/2 also set the first ever 100 mph lap at Kirkistown in Northern Ireland. For the 1989 season a new DFV was bought from Nicholson McLaren at a cost of £28,750. The engine was rebuilt at the end of the ’89 season costing £7,400. For 1990, Don Wood bought 010/2 while Peacock continued to campaign it. After just three races in 1990 010/2 was bought as it finished the race, in 2nd place at Thruxton, by Tony Hildebrand. Whilst under his ownership 010/2 was not used or modified. From there, 010/2 was bought by Murray Smith in 1993, before being bought by the current owner in 1995. The car has not been used since, and is accompanied by a period twin plane wing, another set of wheels with no tyres and 1988 issued FIA papers. T. + 44 (0)1285 831 488 E. The competitiveness of the Tyrrell 010 has been shown this season with Loic Deman taking five pole positions, four podiums, eight wins, and four fastest laps over the biggest field seen for many years. Tyrrell 010/2 is presented largely as last raced in 1990, in complete condition. The point is that two-tier control of motoring sport is vital and should take place quickly. Note that there is no suggestion whatsoever that the RAC, which controls British motoring sport with the approval of the Government, should be overthrown; only that it must be restrained from exploiting, knowingly or inadvertently, those Clubs and their hundreds of members which can less-well than the Big Battalions afford to pay ever- increasing permit and licensing fees. That the situation, in a world of galloping inflation and rising petrol costs, has become desperate, is evident when you realise that the Motor Cycling Club, the oldest sporting Motor Club in this country, which continues to organise its classic long-distance trials dating back to 1908, had to pay more in Ministry-of-Transport Authorisation-Fees to run last year’s Land’s End Trial than the RAC did to hold the sponsored International RAC Rally — something to do with the MCC having more entrants who cover a bigger mileage.     Forty years on, one-litre F3 screamers return to Monaco Four decades - less one week, but who’s counting? – after its last appearance as a contemporary class, one-litre Formula 3 made a triumphant return to the streets of Monaco, where it proved one of the highlights the ACM’s 7th Grand Prix Historique extravaganza on May 1/2. Tony Trimmer, who won the fi nal F1 support race of the era in 1970, in a Race Cars International-entered Brabham BT28, was there to witness the action, as was three-time World Champion Sir Jackie Stewart, who won the fi rst (six years earlier to the day) in 1964, driving one of Ken Tyrrell’s Cooper-BMC T72s. While Stewart dominated, leaving Silvio Moser (Brabham-BMC BT6) and Mauro Bianchi (Alpine-Renault) way behind, Trimmer pipped fellow BT28 driver Jean-Pierre Cassegrain by 1.1 seconds, with fellow Britons Bev Bond (Lotus 59), the late Gerry Birrell (BT28) and Richard Scott (Chevron B17) leading the chase as the Ford MAE engine’s heyday drew to a close. This time round, with amateur historic racers rather than up-and-coming pros fi lling the grid, the lead battle was incredibly closely-fought for much of the distance.
