Zagreb, 2016. 3 Informacije o mentoru Dr. sc. Marijana Belaj izvanredna je profesorica u Odsjeku za etnologiju i kulturnu antropologiju na Filozofskom fakultetu Sveuĉilišta u Zagrebu. Na istom je Fakultetu diplomirala 1994. godine etnologiju i informatologiju. Doktorirala je 2006. godine na Sveuĉilištu u Zagrebu u podruĉju humanisitĉkih znanosti, polje etnologija i antropologija, s temom Sveci zaštitnici u hrvatskoj pučkoj poboţnosti. Zaposlena je pri Odsjeku za etnologiju i kulturnu antropologiju od 2000. godine. Od 2001. godine ukljuĉena je u izvoĊenje nastave pri Odsjeku. Trenutno je nositeljica i izvoĊaĉica ukupno pet kolegija na preddiplomskoj, diplomskoj i poslijediplomskoj razini studija etnologije i kulturne antropologije, jednoga na diplomskom studiju antropologije, te je izvoĊaĉica dijela jednog kolegija na poslijediplomskom studiju etnologije i kulturne antropologije. Šest kolegija od navedenih tiĉu se religijskih tema. Kao predavaĉ je gostovala u izvoĊenju nastave pri ljubljanskom Oddelku za antropologiju in kulturno antropologiju. Sudjelovala je u znanstveno-istraţivaĉkim projektima Ministarstva znanosti, obrazovanja i sporta Uništena tradicijska kultura zapadne Slavonije (2000.–2002.), Identitet i etnogeneza primorskih Bunjevaca (2002.–2005.), Etnološka baza podataka kao izvor znanja o etniĉkim i nacionalnim identitetima (2006.–2007.), te 2004. godine u istraţivaĉkom projektu Political Places in Change Odsjeka za kulturalne studije i povijest umjetnosti Sveuĉilišta u Bergenu. Od 2006.–2012. godine vodila je institucionalni nezavisni znanstveno-istraţivaĉki projekta Hodoĉašća i konstrukcija hodoĉasniĉkoga mjesta. Godine 2015. sudjelovala je u provedbi dionice EU projekta CreArt Od drţavne umjetnosti do kreativnih industrija – transformacija rodnih, politiĉkih i religijskih narativa (nositelj HDLU). Trenutno je pri matiĉnom Odsjeku koordinatorica projekta UsklaĊivanje studijskih programa u podruĉju društvenih i humanistiĉkih znanosti s potrebama trţišta rada (voditelj: doc. dr. sc. Dragan Bagić, nositelj: Filozofski fakultet, potpora: Europski socijalni fond). Od 2003. godine ĉlanica je uredništva i od 2013.–2015. godine glavna urednica znanstvenog ĉasopisa Studia ethnologica Croatica te ĉlanica meĊunarodnog izdavaĉkog savjeta znanstveno-struĉnog ĉasopisa Cris i znanstvenog ĉasopisa Etnoantropološki problemi (Sveuĉilište u Beogradu). Od 2011. godine ĉlanica je Upravnog odbora Hrvatskog etnološkog društva. Od 2012. ĉlanica je Etiĉkog povjerenstva Odsjeka za etnologiju i kulturnu antropologiju.Ĉlanica je udruga HED, SIEF, Hrvatskog hagiografskog društvo “Hagiotheca” te Centra za eksperimentalnu arheologiju. Znanstveni interesi kreću joj se u širokom rasponu tema i kulturnoantropoloških pogleda u podruĉju religije i religioznosti, posebice u podruĉju suvremenih hodoĉašća, religijskog pluraliteta i pluralizma te dinamike meĊureligijskih odnosa i dijaloga. Uz brojne znanstvene radove i izlaganja na znanstvenim skupovima, objavila je knjigu Milijuni na putu. Antropologija hodočašća i sveto tlo MeĎugorja (Zagreb: Naklada Jesenski i Turk, 2012.). 4 Sažetak Tema ovoga rada je izvaninstitucionalni meĊureligijski dijalog u katoliĉkom marijanskom svetištu u Olovu, srednjobosanskom gradiću, koje dijele pripadnici dviju religijskih tradicija, katoliĉke i islamske. Polazište ovoga rada su teorije o dijeljenju hodoĉasniĉkog mjesta u okviru antropologije hodoĉašća i antropologije religije, poddiscipline etnologije odnosno kulturne antropologije. Rad poĉiva na konceptu interreligijskog svetišta i u njemu ostvarenog meĊureligijskog dijaloga. Dijeljenje svetišta podrazumijeva da razliĉite religijske zajednice dijele i neke zajedniĉke ideale. Zajedniĉki ideal katolika i muslimana u Olovu, i na tom idealu graĊen meĊureligijski dijalog, poĉiva na zajedniĉkoj ideji da je sveto locirano u mjestu (Belaj M.). U marijanskom svetištu sveto je poosobljeno u liku Djevice Marije, imenovane prema mjestu Gospa Olovska. Posjetitelji svetišta, koji mu pristupaju kao svetom mjestu, prilaze s razliĉitih pozicija i u njega unose vlastite diskurse. Sveto mjesto se promatra kao prostor koji ne teţi unificiranju, već moţe uzvratiti pluralnost diskursa, iz ĉega proizlazi i njegova univerzalnost (Eade i Sallnow). Cilj ovoga rada bio je prikazati katoliĉko hodoĉasniĉko mjesto i kultno mjesto muslimana kao jedinstveno svetište dugog povijesnog trajanja, ĉija jedinstvenost proizlazi iz njegove vlastite povijesti, rasporeda svetih lokacija i specifiĉnog povijesnog bosanskohercegovaĉkog konteksta u kojemu se odvija interreligijski dijalog. U prikupljanju etnografske graĊe korištene su tehnike sudjelovanja s promatranjem, promatranja i intervjua. Intervjui su okosnica etnografskog dijela ovoga rada, a obavljani su s tri razliĉite skupine: katoliĉki hodoĉasnici, muslimani stanovnici Olova i hijerarhijski sluţbenici (katoliĉki svećenici i olovski imam). Poseban prinos u radu je u autoetnografiji koja objedinjuje trojnu ulogu doktoranda: istraţivaĉa etnologa i kulturnog antropologa, hodoĉasnika i teologa. Analiza graĊe potvrdila je da su interreligijske interakcije u olovskom svetištu dugog povijesnog kontinuiteta te da izvaninstitucionalni meĊureligijski dijalog poĉiva na zajedniĉkim predodţbama o svetom, poboţnim praksama i naracijama kojima pripadnici razliĉitih religijskih tradicija posvećuju isto mjesto. Dijalog se iz svetišta prenosi na druga podruĉja svakodnevnog ţivota i aktualan je i u izvanrednim okolnostima, kakve su one ratne. Ključne riječi Olovo, Gospa, sveto mjesto, meĊureligijski dijalog, katolici, muslimani 5 Summary The theme of this work is non-institutional interreligious dialogue in the Catholic Marian shrine of the central Bosnian town of Olovo, shared by members of two religious traditions, Catholic and Muslim. The premise of this work are theories about the sharing of pilgrimage sites within the anthropology of pilgrimage and anthropology of religion, subdisciplines of ethnology or cultural anthropology. The work is based on the concept of an interreligious shrine and the inter-religious dialogue that takes place inside it. Sharing a shrine implies that different ethnic communities also share some common ideals. The common ideal of Catholics and Muslims in Olovo, as well as the interreligious dialogue built on this ideal, is based on the shared assumption that the sacred is located in a place (Belaj M.). In the Marian shrine the sacred is personalized in the figure of Virgin Mary, named after the locality “Our Lady of Olovo”. Visitors to the shrine, who approach it as a sacred place, come to it from different positions and bring into it their own discourses. The sacred place is considered as a space which does not aspire to unification, but can return a plurality of discourses, from which issues also its universality (Eade and Sallnow). The aim of this work was to show a Catholic pilgrimage site and a Muslim cultic site as a unique sanctuary of long historical duration, whose uniqueness stems from its own history, the position of its sacred locations and the specific Bosnian-Herzegovinian historical context in which the interreligious dialogue takes place. Ethnographic data was collected using the techniques of observation, participant observation, and interview. Interviews are the backbone of the ethnographic part of this work. They were conducted with three different groups: Catholic pilgrims, Muslims residents of Olovo and religious officials (Catholic priests and the imam of Olovo). Data analysis has confirmed that interreligious interactions in the Olovo shrine have a long historical continuity and that the non-institutional interreligious dialogue is founded on shared perceptions about the sacred, on devotional practices and on narratives by means of which members of different religious traditions sanctify the same place. The dialogue is carried over from the shrine to other areas of everyday life and is maintained in extraordinary circumstances, such as war, as well. During the 1992-1996 conflict in Bosnia-Herzegovina, there were reports by various parties concerning the widespread destruction of cultural and religious heritage. In general, these reports came from the following sources: governmental organs and professional institutions in Bosnia-Herzegovina; the local religious communities; interviews with refugees conducted by humanitarian relief organizations and other non-governmental organizations; and media reports from the conflict zone. In response, the Committee on Culture and Education of the Council of Europe's Parliamentary Assembly sent a series of missions to Bosnia-Herzegovina and Croatia to collect information on the destruction by war of cultural heritage.     András RIEDLMAYER* FOUNDATIONS OF THE OTTOMAN PERIOD IN THE BALKAN WARS OF THE 1990s My presentation today concerns the fate of the Ottoman-era waqf monuments and institutions in the Western Balkans during the wars of the 1990s. I will briefly outline what was destroyed and what was saved, illustrated with some examples taken from my post-war fieldwork documenting cultural destruction in Bosnia and Kosovo. I will also try to place these developments in a broader historical and cultural context. My presentation today concerns the fate of the Ottoman-era waqf monuments and institutions in the Western Balkans during the wars of the 1990s. I will briefly outline what was destroyed and what was saved, illustrated with some examples taken from my post-war fieldwork document- ing cultural destruction in Bosnia and Kosovo. I will also try to place these developments in a broader historical and cultural context.1 At the outset, I want to emphasize two facts that are well known to specialists in Ottoman his- tory, but are perhaps less well understood by the public and by the writers of school textbooks. One is that the Ottoman Empire was, almost from its beginnings, a European power, and not only in the geographic sense. [RESİM 1] For more than five centuries Rumeli, the European part of the empire, was a major center of Ottoman civilization and cultural production. Another fact we should keep in mind is that, although the Ottoman Empire was ruled by a Turk- ish dynasty, it was not a Turkish nation-state. A large part of the population of the Balkans during the period of Ottoman rule were Muslims, but the majority of Muslims in the Balkans were not ethnic Turks.

The lines of conflict in the former Yugoslavia were drawn across ethno- religious lines, leading to the use of religiously imbued rhetoric, symbols, and violence. Religious and sexual elements of violence can be mapped using mass graves, rape camps, destroyed religious buildings, and the bodies of the dead. Despite repeated dis- courses, witness statements, and images that illustrate elements of both religious vio- lence and sexual violence, there is very little literature about the Bosnian War that dis- cusses the impact religion has on sexual violence.

Riedlmayer (Harvard University) Barely a decade ago, in March 1992, the people of Bosnia voted for independence. In a national plebiscite, with close to two thirds of the electorate participating, voters cast their ballots almost unanimously in favor of an independent, democratic, and pluralistic Bosnia. As Bosnia's National Assembly met in the capital city of Sarajevo after the vote, more than 100,000 citizens­­­Muslims, Christians, and others­­­rallied in front of the Parliament building, holding signs and shouting in unison: "Mi smo za mir!"­­­"We are for peace!" The shouts for peace were silenced by gunshots, as Serb nationalist gunmen, concealed on the upper floors of the Holiday Inn across the street, opened fire on the crowd, killing and wounding dozens of people as they ran for cover. The date was 6 April, 1992. In the days and months that followed, the Serb­led Yugoslav People’s Army systematically bombarded Sarajevo from prepared positions on the mountains overlooking the city. Snipers with telescopic sights picked off civilians as they ran down the streets of the capital in search of food, water and shelter. [1] Thus began the assault on Bosnia­Herzegovina. From the beginning, it was characterized by two features that had little to do with legitimate military objectives: The mass expulsion of civilians driven from their homes, robbed, raped and murdered for being of the "wrong" ethnicity and religion, and The deliberate targeting and destruction of cultural, religious and historic landmarks by nationalist extremists.

It is a wholly original and independent contribution. 1 Abstract This dissertation makes an original contribution to knowledge of how irregular military actors operate in modern mass atrocity crises, providing an evidence- based multi-perspective analysis of the irregular military dynamics that accom- panied the violent collapse of Yugoslavia (1991-1995). While it is broadly accep- ted that paramilitary or irregular units have been involved in practically every case of genocide in the modern world, detailed analysis of these dynamics is rare. A consequence of paramilitary participation in atrocity crises –which can be seen in academic literature, policy-making, and in popular understanding– has been to mask the continued dominance of the state in a number of violent crises where, instead of a vertically organised hierarchical structure of violence, irregular actors have comprised all or part of the military force. Here, analysis of structures of command and control, and of domestic and international net- works, presents the webs of support that enable and encourage irregular military dynamics.

    The Limits of “Ethnic War”: Intra-Group Violence and Resistance during the Bosnian War Gordana Božić Thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the Doctorate in Philosophy degree in Political Science School of Political Studies of Department of Political Science Faculty of Social Science University of Ottawa © Gordana Božić, Ottawa, Canada, 2018 Abstract The Bosnian war was not a purely “ethnic conflict,” as both in-group members and out-group members were sacrificed for the higher political objective, namely, ethnic homogenization of divided Bosnian territories. In particular, I argue the sacrifice of in-group members, especially those who lived on the out-territory, was integral to the violence directed against out-group members. The process of resettlement of the ethnic kin was just as important as the expulsion of the ethnic “other” for re-creating a new ethnic and political balance in select strategic areas. Furthermore, the practice of the appropriation of existing and the creation of new parallel state structures were the main mechanisms of the process of the sacrifice of in-group members from the out-territory. In turn, nationalist narratives were constructed not only to justify those new structures, but also to portray ethnic minorities as potentially dangerous and threatening. In order to complete ethnic homogenization, Bosnian nationalists directly targeted the private household, expelling Bosnians from their homes and appropriating and destroying their private property. I argue that violence against the household rendered the private sphere political. In the second part of the thesis, I reflect on actions and words of ordinary Bosnians, both in-group and out-group members, who resisted violence and helped each other during the war.
