The 482 species presently known are listed in an alphabetical checklist, with references to important descriptions, keys and illustrations published by or after Santesson (1952), and an indication of the distribution. Also added are all synonyms used after 1952. Introductory chapters deal with the present state of research on foliicolous lichens and its history. Foliicolous Lichens and Their Lichenicolous Fungi Collected During the Smithsonian International Cryptogamic Expedition to Guyana 1996
45 Tropical Bryology 15: 45-76, 1998 Foliicolous lichens and their lichenicolous fungi collected during the Smithsonian International Cryptogamic Expedition to Guyana 1996 Robert Lücking Lehrstuhl für Pflanzensystematik, Universität Bayreuth, D-95447 Bayreuth, Germany Abstract: A total of 233 foliicolous lichen species and 18 lichenicolous fungi are reported from Guyana as a result of the Smithsonian „International Cryptogamic Expedition to Guyana“ 1996. Three lichens and two lichenicolous fungi are new to science: Arthonia grubei sp.n., Badimia subelegans sp.n., Calopadia pauciseptata sp.n., Opegrapha matzeri sp.n. (lichenicolous on Amazonomyces sprucei), and Pyrenidium santessonii sp.n. (lichenicolous on Bacidia psychotriae). The new combination Strigula janeirensis (Bas.: Phylloporina janeirensis; syn.: Raciborskiella janeirensis) is proposed. Apart from Amazonomyces sprucei and Bacidia psychotriae, Arthonia lecythidicola (with the lichenicolous A. pseudopegraphina) and Byssolecania deplanata (with the lichenicolous Opegrapha cf. kalbii) are reported as new hosts for lichenicolous fungi. Arthonia pseudopegraphina growing on A. lecythidicola is the first known case of adelphoparasitism at generic level in foliicolous Arthonia. Arthonia flavoverrucosa, Badimia polillensis, and Byssoloma vezdanum are new records for the Neotropics, and 115 species are new for Guyana, resulting in a total of c. 280 genuine foliicolous species reported for that country, while Porina applanata and P. verruculosa are excluded from its flora. The foliicolous lichen flora of Guyana is representative for the Guianas (Guyana, Suriname, French Guiana) and has great affinities with the Amazon region, while the degree of endemism is low. A characteristic species for this area is Amazonomyces sprucei. Species composition is typical of Neotropical lowland to submontane humid forests, with a dominance of the genera Porina, Strigula, and Mazosia. -

New Species of Foliicolous Lichens from “La Amistad” Biosphere Reserve, Costa Rica

Four new foliicolous lichen species are described from the Biosphere Reserve “La Amistad” (Cor- dillera de Talamanca), Costa Rica: Byssoloma carneum with yellowish apothecia and crystalline exciple; Fellhanera tubulifera with tubular, campylidia-like pycnidia; Porina flavopapillata with subglobose, reddish perithecia provided with short, irregular, yellowish squamules and 15-septate ascospores; and Trichothelium chlorinum with minute, greenish perithecia provided with short, irregular setae and 3-septate ascospores. Based on new collections, Badimia tuckermanii is emended to cover an essentially neotropical taxon and excluding the paleotropical B. elixii. 1. Introduction The foliicolous lichen biotas of Costa Rica are rather well studied and shelter about 400 species, which corresponds to 50 % of the world’s biotas and 80 % of all species known from the Neotropics (Lücking 1995, 2003, Lücking & Kalb 2000). The discovery of new species in this rather small country seems not very likely; nevertheless, there are extensive areas that are diffi- cult to access and harbour pristine, unexplored vegetation. The largest of these is “La Amistad” International Park, adjacent to “Chirripó” National Park and south of the capital San José, cover- ing an area of c. 2000 km2 in the Cordillera de Talamanca and the western parts of Panama (Herrera 1992). Together with a number of other protected areas, it forms the “La Amistad” Bio- sphere Reserve (Herrera 1992). -

Stenroos1 Key words Abstract Though most of the lichenicolous fungi belong to the Ascomycetes, their phylogenetic placement based on molecular data is lacking for numerous species. In this study the phylogenetic placement of 19 species of cladoniicolous species lichenicolous fungi was determined using four loci (LSU rDNA, SSU rDNA, ITS rDNA and mtSSU). The phylogenetic Pilocarpaceae analyses revealed that the studied lichenicolous fungi are widespread across the phylogeny of Lecanoromycetes. Protothelenellaceae One species is placed in Acarosporales, Sarcogyne sphaerospora; five species in Dactylosporaceae, Dactylo Scutula cladoniicola spora ahtii, D. deminuta, D. glaucoides, D. parasitica and Dactylospora sp.; four species belong to Lecanorales, Stictidaceae Lichenosticta alcicorniaria, Epicladonia simplex, E. stenospora and Scutula epiblastematica. The genus Epicladonia Stictis cladoniae is polyphyletic and the type E. sandstedei belongs to Leotiomycetes. Phaeopyxis punctum and Bachmanniomyces uncialicola form a well supported clade in the Ostropomycetidae. Epigloea soleiformis is related to Arthrorhaphis and Anzina. Four species are placed in Ostropales, Corticifraga peltigerae, Cryptodiscus epicladonia, C. galaninae and C. cladoniicola -

Additions to the lichen biota of Isla del Coco, Puntarenas, Costa Rica. Introduction: The flo- ristic composition of Isla del Coco is relatively well known. While studies have been typically oriented to flow- ering plants, other organisms such as lichens remain understudied. Objective: The purpose of this inventory is to expand the documentation of lichen species found in Isla del Coco, by reviewing literature and herbarium col- lections, as well as new collections, to facilitate the understanding of the diversity of said organisms. Methods: A list of the collections deposited in several herbaria was prepared, complemented with the bibliographical references of previous works. In addition, a field trip to collect and photograph specimens was performed in November 2017. The names of the species were adapted according to the online database Index Fungorum. Results: A total of 284 specimens were studied, corresponding to 173 different taxa, including 40 new records. Twenty-five taxa were identified at the genus level and 148 at the species level. The specimens were distributed in 23 families and 66 genera. The best-represented families are Graphidaceae (37 spp.), Pilocarpaceae (34 spp.) and Collemataceae (8 spp.). Porina (17 spp.) and Strigula (14 spp.) were the most diverse genera. The major- ity (52%) of the 148 species have a pantropical distribution, 34% are Neotropical and 13% are cosmopolitan. -
Aquacidia, a New Genus to Accommodate a Group of Skiophilous Temperate Bacidia Species That Belong in the Pilocarpaceae (Lichenized Ascomycetes)

Alvarado3 Key words Abstract – The new genus Aquacidia is proposed to accommodate three temperate Bacidia species that belong in the Pilocarpaceae and are not related to the type species B. rosella, which is in the Ramalinaceae. The phylo- Lecanorales genetic position was clarified by an analysis of the mtSSU region showing a distinct lineage within the Pilocarpaceae. Ramalinaceae The following new combinations are proposed: Aquacidia antricola (Hulting) Aptroot (syn. Bacidia antricola, B. riparian carneoglauca), A. trachona (Ach.) Aptroot, and A. viridifarinosa (Coppins & P. James) Aptroot. A key to Aquacidia saxicolous lichens species is provided. Samenvatting – Het nieuwe korstmossengeslacht Aquacidia wordt beschreven en omvat drie soorten van het genus Bacidia (Rama linaceae) die voorkomen in gematigde klimaatzones en die niet tot de familie Rama linaceae blijken te behoren, maar tot een andere familie, namelijk de Pilocarpaceae. Ook zijn deze drie soorten niet verwant aan de typesoort van het genus Bacidia, B. rosella, of aan andere bekende genera in de Pilo carpaceae, waardoor voor die drie soorten het beschrijven van een nieuw genus nodig is. De fylogenetische positie van deze soorten is bepaald aan de hand van een mtSSU rDNA marker. De volgende nieuwe combinaties worden gemaakt: Aquacidia antricola (Hulting) Aptroot (syn. Bacidia antricola, B. carneoglauca), A. trachona (Ach.) Aptroot, en A. viridifarinosa (Coppins & P. James) Aptroot. Voor deze soorten is een sleutel opgenomen. -

Introduction Few scientists make such a mark on their science that they can be said to change their field, and fewer still are involved in setting up the framework for an entire branch of natural history. One such person is Josef Hafellner, to whom we dedicate the present contribution. Conscious that he is – notwithstanding his recent retirement – still very much fully active as a researcher, we wish here to highlight his impact on our science to date. Josef Hafellner has dedicated his scientific career to the classification and taxonomy of fungi, in particular lichen-forming asco- mycetes and the fungi inhabiting lichen symbioses (known as lichenicolous fungi). -

Most reported species represent a group of crustose, often sterile lichens where secondary chemistry plays an important role in the taxonomy. Characteristics of each species, notes on similar taxa, distribution, and habitat are provided. Key words — lichenized fungi, chemotaxonomy, lichen metabolites Introduction Since the publication of the list of lichens and lichenicolous fungi of Poland (Fałtynowicz 2003), numerous species have been added to the lichen biota of the country, including some new to science (e.g. Flakus 2007, Kukwa & Kubiak 2007, Motiejūnaitė & Czyżewska 2008, Krzewicka 2009, Kukwa & Flakus 2009, Łubek 2009, Zhurbenko et al. 2009, Śliwa & Flakus 2011). Most of these taxa are either lichenicolous fungi or lichens belonging to critical groups requiring analyses of secondary lichen metabolites. In this paper, we report seven lichen species not previously reported from Poland.
