This year’s Southern Grown Weekend promises to be full of fun and engaging experiences. As in the past, we come together to celebrate all things Southern, and this year, with our “How to Be a Southerner” workshops and demonstrations, we can brush up on our ability to tie a bow tie and shuck an oyster, or explore new tips for preparing southern cuisine and cocktails. The musical side of things will no doubt be a winner as well, starting with Garden & Gun’s Kick-off Dinner and a Show on Friday with Nashville-based Drew Holcomb and The Neighbors. The musical highlight of the weekend occurs on Saturday night when the Grammy®-nominated band NEEDTOBREATHE takes the stage. We appreciate the support and involvement of our sponsors, partners, and volunteers in planning and staging this year’s event. Thanks also go to every Sea Island team member who has helped make this weekend a reality. As they have for almost 90 years, they are providing the genuine, Southern hospitality for which Sea Island is known. Thank you for being part of this year’s festival. I hope you enjoy every moment of your time with us. • NEEDTOBREATHE-Bio-May-2016
South Carolina rock band NEEDTOBREATHE has seen their fair share of ups and downs over the course of their career, but their latest chapter left them on a particularly high note unmatched by any of their previous work. Their blockbuster 2014 album Rivers In the Wasteland landed the band their first-ever Grammy Award nomination, topped Billboard’s Top Rock Albums and Top Alternative Albums charts, and earned their highest-charting single yet with the RIAA Gold- Certified Top 10 hit “Brother (feat. Gavin DeGraw).” But when it came time to record its follow- up, the Charleston, South Carolina-based band decided to completely alter their creative approach and break into entirely new sonic terrain. Building off the impassioned, anthemic alt-rock dynamic that’s come to define the band, brothers Bear Rinehart (vocals, guitar) and Bo Rinehart (guitar, vocals), bassist/vocalist Seth Bolt, and keyboardist/vocalist Josh Lovelace brought their sixth studio album H A R D L O V E to life by delving into the world of electronic effects and instrumentation. The result: a sublimely crafted and expansive sound that still reflects the larger-than-life intensity of NEEDTOBREATHE’s unforgettable live show. With its lavish arrangements and sweeping melodies, H A R D L O V E radiates an unbridled energy that’s got much to do with the pure joy that powered the making of the album. “Working with synth for the first time, there was a sense of wonder that was almost mystical,” says Bo. “It was like when we first picked up our guitars and every chord we were striking had this huge impact on us.” Adds Bear: “The unfamiliarity led us to rely totally on feeling, and we all felt inspired in a whole new way.” Along with dreaming up that vital new sound, NEEDTOBREATHE instilled each of the songs on H A R D L O V E with a resolutely hopeful spirit.

  • NEEDTOBREATHE out of Body Bio and Boiler
Childhood exemplifies the pinnacle of freedom. Long before the insecurities, responsibilities, and doubts of adulthood set in, life presents a sea of endless possibilities and boundless wonder on a daily basis. This doesn’t have to change with age though. NEEDTOBREATHE reflect the freedom of youth on their seventh full-length offering, Out of Body [Elektra Records]. The GRAMMY® Award-nominated platinum-certified South Carolina trio—Bear Rinehart [vocals, guitar], Seth Bolt [bass, vocals], and Josh Lovelace [keys, vocals]—examine life, family, and friends through a youthful prism. The guys take stock of not only two decades as a band, but also first-time fatherhood and the future over a rich soundtrack of soulful rock with stadium-size scope and poetic intimacy. “Looking at my sons, I’m constantly reminded to be in the moment,” admits Bear. “I’m competitive. I think too far down the road a lot. Then, it’s funny and eye-opening when you see a two-year-old naked in the yard with zero insecurities. As a parent, I try to grow as a person. I could be pretty neurotic before. Every time I’d walk into a room, I’d wonder if I was enough. I identified these survival mechanisms and began to see how many of them were keeping me from joy. All of these questions led me to write songs about pushing through that layer and getting to my authentic self. Seeing my children gives me a roadmap of where I should be.” “We’ve experienced a lot of fresh inspiration,” adds Seth.
