The National Music Publishers’ Association (NMPA) virtually held its 2021 Annual Meeting celebrating creators and executives, giving a clear picture of the publishing industry through new data, and more.

The meeting’s premiere honor went to singer- songwriter Taylor Swift who was presented the NMPA Songwriter Icon Award. Celebrating Swift with a personal tribute, performed her hit “Clean” and said, “Ms. Taylor Swift has proven herself to be an extraordinary storyteller, an innovator, a leader, an advocate, an activist, and this woman shows no signs of stopping.” At the top of the show, up-and-coming talent Priscilla Block performed a medley of Swift’s biggest hits.

Swift accepted the NMPA Songwriter Icon Award by naming her most impactful influences including , , and UMPG Nashville Chairman & CEO . “I’m really, really honored to be receiving this award because it honors the part of my job that is so magical and mystifying to me still,” she said. Swift went on to compliment NMPA Board member and songwriter , who she said “is someone who spent hours and hours and hours with me when there was absolutely no sign that anything would happen in my career.” She also thanked NMPA Board member UMPG Chairman & CEO Jody Gerson, “for being such a champion of female throughout the industry.”

Additionally, Country Music Association (CMA) CEO Sarah Trahern was given the NMPA Industry Legacy Award for all of her efforts to modernize and expand the genre and to support the songwriters who form its foundation. Singer- songwriter Luke Bryan celebrated Trahern saying, “I think through the everchanging world of the music business, Sarah has continued to evolve with it and allow our wonderful industry to prosper and watch Nashville grow and watch the CMA grow under her leadership.”

Peermusic Executive Chair Ralph Peer II received a surprise tribute for his 50 years of service on the NMPA Board of Directors from NMPA Board Chairman Irwin Robinson, legendary and producer David Foster, singer- songwriter and producer Poo Bear, and peermusic CEO Mary Megan Peer. Ms. Peer said, “I know that you have chosen to spend 50 years serving on the board of the NMPA due to the special relationship NMPA creates between music publishers, songwriting colleagues and the government.”

During his annual State of the Industry speech, NMPA President & CEO David Israelite announced new enforcement actions being taken against “rampant infringers in the gaming industry,” such as Roblox. NMPA’s lawsuit, filed today on behalf of a dozen publisher plaintiffs, will seek damages in the amount of no less than $200 million for the exploitation of music without proper licenses.

Israelite said, “They’ve made hundreds of millions of dollars by requiring users to pay every time they upload music onto the platform—taking advantage of young people’s lack of understanding about copyright – and then they take virtually no action to prevent repeat infringement or alert users to the risks they are taking.”

Additionally, Israelite officially launched a major ramp-up of its takedown campaign against -owned Twitch, another of the world’s most popular video creation and gaming platforms with over nine million active streamers. “Twitch should serve its users by fully licensing music which would allow the platform to flourish and copyright owners to be properly compensated,” Israelite said.

Lady A Rediscovers Sound & Vision With New Album Out June 25

After spending the last year rediscovering their sound and vision, multi-Platinum band Lady A will release their upcoming album, What A Song Can Do (Chapter One) via BMLG Records on June 25.

“There’s an interdependence that we have with each other, and music is at the center of that to me,” says , one third of Lady A. “We are all living in the now together… we’re all a work in progress, and that is what we wanted to share with these songs on the first chapter.”

Produced by , each track on the seven-song project is penned by at least one member of the award-winning trio. Rather than being dedicated to the struggles of 2020, this new effort was born alongside them and adds a layer of depth to Lady A’s catalog.

The album’s title-track opens the trio’s hearts to a fresh start, while songs like “Talk of This Town” and “Fire” use third degree romantic burns as a metaphor for adversity. “Worship What I Hate” takes a look at who we become if we’re not paying attention and “Chance of Rain” reminds us not to play it safe in matters of life and love. The gentle “Things He Handed Down” dusts off some handed-down wisdom, questioning how it’s put to use. MR

Big Loud Publishing, Warner Chappell Music Sign Mark Holman

Big Loud Publishing and Warner Chappell Music have teamed up to sign chart-topping songwriter Mark Holman to a co-publishing deal.

“I’m thrilled to be a part of the Big Loud and Warner Chappell families,” says Holman. “I’ve always admired their creative mentality and ability to push boundaries in the industry. Having a great team is so important to me, and I can’t wait to see what we will accomplish together.”

An Illinois native, Holman began writing and producing in 2008, eventually making the move to Nashville in 2014. He soon scored his first No. 1 hit as a songwriter on Line’s 2018 hit, “Simple,” and now has two singles at country radio—’s “” and Maddie & Tae’s “Woman You Got.”

Overall, Holman has over 60 cuts from artists across a range of genres, including , , Hardy, , Three Days Grace, The Struts, Blue October, Halestorm, and Art of Dying. He also has upcoming releases with , Chris Young, Morgan Evans, Dylan Scott and Daughtry.

“We couldn’t be more excited and honored to welcome Mark into the Big Loud Publishing family, in partnership with the great team at Warner Chappell Music,” explains Big Loud Publishing’s Travis Carter. “As a longtime fan of Mark’s, I’ve always been blown away by his ability to navigate multiple genres with ease in both his songwriting and producing. He’s truly a next-level talent, and we’re really looking forward to building upon his already impressive track record in the country genre and beyond.” MR

Now, with more than 5 billion global streams, international tours under his belt, his own clothing line, and his first ever Caliville Weekend festival this coming September, Young has also stepped into a new phase of life with the birth of his first child, Presley, in October of 2019. With this little addition plus another baby due in July, Young has had to make a wave of adjustments both in his personal life and in his songwriting.

“I finally reached a stage of my life that, if I’m lucky, is going to be pretty static for a while,” Young tells MusicRow. “I’m married with a baby and another one on the way, but you can’t just talk about adding the next child in every song. That’s not interesting for people,” he explains. “The biggest challenge with the songwriting for this record was to continue to be myself—to be super honest and vulnerable, but also not write eight songs about my daughter. That alienates a lot of the listeners that have been there since the first record and ‘Sleep Without You.’

“I would sit down with writers and say, ‘I need a break up song but I’m happily married, so tell me a story about your worst breakup.’ I would try to take something they said about their experience and find something that reminded me of an experience that I went through and tap into how I felt when I was there,” he shares. “ really challenging, but I think it made me a better songwriter. It was an interesting thing to emotionally put myself in a bunch of different people’s shoes while writing and choosing songs for this record.”

Working again with producer Dann Huff, Young takes listeners through the full spectrum of emotions and several sonic landscapes on the eight tracks that make up Weekends Look A Little Different These Days. Songs like the project’s lead single, “Lady,” acts as an open letter to Presley, while the title track and songs “This” and “Dear Me” find Young reflecting on his personal growth. Meanwhile, his current single at country radio, “Not Yet,” reminds listeners of the importance of being present in the moment. “Leave Me Alone” finds Young letting things in the past melt away with a tropical, easy-going sound. Also included on the project is the ‘80s rock anthem-esque “You Got Away With It,” and the soulful album closer, “You Didn’t.”

As he puts out each new record, Young constantly aims to pull back the curtain on his life little by little, each time becoming more and more vulnerable with his music. With Weekends Look A Little Different These Days, he’s found a new level of authenticity and yet another way to let people in. “I hope that it never feels fake, but that it always feels vulnerable and honest. It’s like being naked when you get this honest with your music, so if I don’t feel that way, I’ve done it wrong,” he shares. “There’s nothing that’s left unsaid or anything that I left out in these eight songs.”

Since having to postpone his headlining tour in the early months of 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Young chose to look at the silver linings that came with lockdown. Most importantly, during that time without touring, he was able to be present for much of Presley’s first year.

“I got to see all of the firsts or at least most of them. I heard her say ‘da-da’ for the first time and all of the important stuff,” he gushes. “If I was going to pick a year for this to happen, it would definitely be my child’s first year of life. [Having a baby] is a huge adjustment and it changes everything, but in a way that you would never trade for the world.”

With the release of a new album, Young also has his eyes set on the future, including what shows might look like with these eight new tracks to add to the setlist. However, getting back out on the road and finding a new normal with two little ones will undoubtedly be an adjustment, but one that Young is excited for. He just announced he will be heading back out on the road this fall on his headlining The Weekends Tour. Launching Sept. 11, the tour features special guests Maddie & Tae and Filmore, with Ryan Hurd and Matt Ferranti on select shows.

In April, Young also announced that his first stab at a festival, Caliville Weekend, will take place over Labor Day Weekend in Palm Springs, with tickets on sale now. What first began as three days full of the California native’s favorite things and capped off by a on the last night has quickly become a weekend full of activities, events, and live music each night. With his friends Maddie & Tae, Filmore, Chase Rice, Seaforth, and Devin Dawson, Young has created yet another opportunity for fans to pull back the curtain on his life a little more.

“I’m looking forward to everything about [that weekend]. It’s going to be full of all my favorite things, so if you want to really get to know me, here’s another chance,” Young says. “I’ll be there hanging out with everybody, golfing, swimming, and going to the every night… One thing I will promise is that it’s going to make it late into the night every night.” MR
