La- wanson held the title of defensive quality control coach in 2012 when he worked with the team’s safeties and special teams and was the manager of player development in 2013 when 2021 WEEKLY HONORS/ACCOLADES he assisted with tight ends and full backs. • Lawanson’s other coaching experience comes from nearly a decade of work as a high school coach in Texas from 2004 to 2012, as well as stops at Tulsa and Cal Poly following his graduation from San Diego State. While in Oklahoma, Lawanson coached linebackers and the secondary for Tulsa and his two-year stint at Cal Poly was spent coaching running backs.

THROW OUT THE PRESEASON POLL • All the way back in July before the season was pushed into the spring, the Lumberjacks were selected to finish seventh in the Big Sky coaches’ poll and nine by the media. • Three schools ranked higher in the coaches poll opted out of the spring, with four of the five opt outs originally ranked higher in the media poll. • NAU now ranks as the fourth among the remaining schools in the coaches poll, behind Weber State, Eastern Washington and UC Davis, and trails the same group in addition to Idaho in the media poll.

ARIZONA All-STARS • After 15 of NAU’s 30 signees from the February 2020 recruiting class hailed from Arizona, the Lumberjacks added another large group of locals in the 2021 class. • Another 15 Arizona high school players committed to the program in December 2020, with another five from Arizona added as walk-ons at the February signing day. • More than 60 players currently on the Lumberjacks are from Arizona, making up just about half of the current roster. • Carson Taylor, Kamdan Hightower, Nehemiah Magalei, Coleman Owen, Hendrix Johnon, Har-
