Jumpstart GE wraps up pilot run By GRACE SCHULZ [email protected] The end of the school year brings not only summer break, but also a close to SUU’s pilot run of the Jumpstart General Education Program. Jumpstart is a one-year, 34-credit class which allowed students to earn all of their general education credits through an integrated curriculum. The class focused on the theme of “Freedom” and used field trips and collaborative assignments as its base. Jumpstart student Harrison Haslam, a freshman exercise science major from Kaysville, came to SUU specifically because of the Jumpstart Program and said it was well worth his time. “We’ve been the guinea pigs and they told us that, but I don’t think it’s been detrimental to me or my academic career at all,” he said. “I think I’ve learned a lot more applicable knowledge opposed to what a normal class would be like.” The Jumpstart Program will expand into two sections UNIVERSITY JOURNAL FILE PHOTO next year, one in the morning and one in the afternoon. Summer Soriano, Brielle Bourgeois, Kristy Johnson and MaKenzie Bell all played alongside returner Jessica French at the defender position. As she looked at her back line, Hogan only had one word to describe that group of players: gritty. “They’re like seasoned vets,” Hogan said. “(Against and Women) they were rock solid and we still have improvements to make. Once we make some of those improvements, they’re going to be like a fortress back there.” The T-Birds finished the spring season with a record of 4–2–1 with losses coming from Western Colorado and BYU. SUU tallied wins against UVU, Dixie State and the Real Salt Lake Women’s team as well as a win in the Alumni game. The team’s draw was against Westminster College. Hogan said the loss to Western Colorado was because the team was not focused and did not have the intensity she hoped the team would have had. “To win, you have to be on your game all the time,” she said. “You’re not going to be handed anything.” In order to not repeat a loss like to Western Colorado, Hogan said the key is having a good summer and players being accountable for their performance.

CHARLOTTE THALHAMMER / UNIVERSITY JOURNAL “The individual accountability over the summer will determine what we work on (in the fall),” she said. “If we have to work on fitness (in the fall), that’s terrible because we can’t work on tactics. But if we’re all set up with fitness, then we’re going to be fine.” As a whole, Hogan said she thinks all her team needs is finetuning, especially in positioning on the back line but she is confident for the team’s opener in the fall.
