19 FRESHMAN STORY CALEB O'NEILL

20 STORY

Heyo! My name is Caleb O’Neill, I’m a sophomore at SUU and am majoring in Political Science with an emphasis in International Relations! I have loved every minute of my life since I moved to Cedar City to go to Southern Utah University and I wouldn’t change it for the world! SUU is my home now and the friends that I’ve made since moving I consider my Cedar family. SUU holds a special place in my heart because when I was deciding what my plans were after high school it was the only University that I talked to that cared about my situation at the time.

My senior year of high school I had serious health problems that we couldn’t figure out for a long time. My last semester of high school was filled with doctor’s appointments and tests and IVs and even a colonoscopy (I promise they’re not that bad, haha). It took a lot of love and support from family and friends to get me through that semester and SUU was a huge part of that. While my friends were deciding between colleges I was trying to find a diagnosis. College seemed like an impossible dream. But SUU eased my worries. I attended a Red Riot having no intention of ever going to this school but boy did they all change my mind. I was vocal about not really caring about SUU to of these amazing classes and camp outs with my friends that I now everyone that tried to ‘recruit’ me but everyone still showed me that consider my family. they cared about my success and well being, nothing else. With every step I took in my new life at SUU there was always a chance After that Red Riot I applied for scholarships and applied to be a for my health to relapse. After meeting with my professors and my Presidential Ambassador and eventually was awarded the scholarship. boss’s on campus I never was worried about what would happen if my When my Admissions Counselor personally came to my school health did take a turn for the worse. My professors checked in all year, to award me my scholarship he laid out different options for me extended due dates when family passed away, and worked with me dependent upon my health getting better. He told me that SUU cared every time I had a routine doctor's appointment. I was nervous to move about my health and THE ENTIRE UNIVERSITY wanted me to have away from my family and support system that I depended on for so long, options and not to worry about college because my health was what but I found a new family here at SUU that I can depend on just as much. I needed to prioritize. SUU worked with me and made sure that if my I chose to become a T-Bird and was welcomed in a caring family with health permitted I had a home at SUU for whenever I was ready. And I open wings. Haha, get it. Choosing to attend Southern Utah University hadn’t even committed to the university yet! I remember saying to my has been one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. parents “If they’re going to treat me like this as a prospective student how are they going to treat me as a real student?” and I found my answer to that!

INCREDIBLE. I randomly found out about SUU’s Jumpstart program and fell in love. I was able to get all my general education credits done in two semesters and I had such a blast doing it. I was able to have Biology class on hikes in Great Basin National Park, Astronomy after roasting s’mores at the campfire in Bryce Canyon National Park, and Photography class using the Grand Canyon as our subject. I even went on a backpacking trip through SUU Outdoors with the President of the University! The best part of it all was I was able to experience all

21 SENIOR STORY SUNNY SIMS

The best four years of my life were spent at Southern Utah University. Being from out-of-state, I was quite nervous to go to college away from home. I didn’t know what to expect moving to a state I knew nothing about and where I only knew a handful of people. When I arrived for my first year of college, I was immediately welcomed into the SUU family. SUU does an amazing job at ensuring that students are given the proper resources and connections to excel in academics, extracurricular activities, and your personal life. SUU prepared me for my current job and education as an Assistant Director for Diversity Initiatives at the University of Arizona’s James E. Rogers College of Law while studying for my Masters of Legal Studies.

I came to SUU knowing that I wanted to pursue a career in the legal field. I studied Criminal Justice and Political Science with a minor in Legal Studies. My studies opened many opportunities to be involved in my passion for the legal field. I participated in mock trials, completed legal and congressional internships, and served as the president of the Legal Studies Student Association. Not only did the hands-on experience opportunities further my education but the courses themselves were taught by professors who took the time to work with each individual student. Not every university can say that their professors take the time to get to know their students and their future goals and help them reach those goals. I still to this day communicate with my professors from SUU. Your professors might write your letters of recommendations for graduate school, help you get your

22 STORY

first job, or help you with a career project. Your professors want the best for you. Don’t just be the next student in class, but stand out and make connections. Make your professor remember you because it goes a long way.

The most important thing when finding an institution that best fits you is the campus environment. Some universities have competitive environments and that may be what some prospective students look for. I personally enjoyed SUU because of the lack of forced competition and the presence of students who uplift each other and desire to be future colleagues. Don’t be afraid to branch out, join new organizations, and make new friends. At SUU, not only are there endless academic opportunities but also other areas. Whether you want to be a part of student government, Greek life, the center for diversity, the center for politics, or Crocs Club, find what you love and take the initiative. I was a part of over 18 organizations during my time at SUU and held over 8 different leadership positions. This doesn’t mean that you have to join every organization that you come across, but expand and diversify your college experience. If it wasn’t for my campus involvement, I would not have the job that I received right out of college. Academics will always come first but if you can balance between academics and experience, you will be a T-Bird prepared for success! WHAT WE HAVE TO OFFER Visiting campus is a great way to see what it will be like to be a Thunderbird. Come take a tour of SUU, check out our on-campus housing, and meet some of our great faculty, following proper pandemic protocols, of course. Virtual info sessions are also available.
