A Battle Between Historical Perspectives by Sarah Cheely UNC JOURney | 2 Letter From the EditorDear Reader, The entire editorial board and staff are pleased to present the second annual volume of the University of North Carolina’s Journal of Undergraduate Research (UNC JOURney). This journal expresses the wide variety of academic disciplines and opportunities the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC-CH) offers students. The seven articles published in this editions explore the social sciences, humanities, and natural sciences. I hope the growth UNC JOURney and other student engagement from the Office for Undergraduate Research (OUR) continue to spur and inspire students to engage in research opportunities on and off campus. The goal of UNC JOURney in the overall OUR student engagement ecosystem serves to give students a place to publish faculty-mentored research, including SURF projects, partial and full honors theses, and other independent research. UNC JOURney is an annual journal dedicated to celebrating and supporting the original research conducted early in students’ academic careers that reflects appropriate scope and complexity for excellent undergraduate work. UNC JOURney would not have been possible without our dedicated editorial and publicity board. I would like to thank all of our section editors and publicity team members. Next, a huge than kyou to my managing editor Maggie Hilderbran (’19) and publicity director Sean McCaffery (’20). Their ideas, passion and leadership on this edition have carried us to publication, and I could not be prouder to have served as their editor-in-chief. Lastly, I am wishing the best of luck to next year’s co editors-in-chief April Wang and Zoe Hazerjian. I would also like to acknowledge the unwavering support of OUR. They have continuously offered their guidance during the second year of this venture on campus. Specifically, I want to thank Associate Dean and Director Troy Blackburn (Department of Exercise and Sports Science), Associate Director Monica Richard, Associate Director Boots Quimby, and Business Services Coordinator Denise Carter. Lastly, thank you to everyone who submitted a manuscript for consideration in this edition of UNC JOURney and to our readers for taking the time to explore and learn about the research occurring at UNC-CH. Please enjoy this second edition of UNC JOURney; the entire staff and I hope that you enjoy these unique and interesting pieces of research. The College Board once again updated its curriculum in response to the backlash. First, this paper explores the two most prev- alent methods of historical teaching: revisionist history and American exceptionalism. This is done in the form of a literature review that analyzes scholars’ work on K-12 history education and scholars’ different interpretations of American exceptionalism. Primarily, this research paper seeks to discover significant changes between the 2014 curriculum and subsequent versions of the curriculum. By conducting a con- tent analysis of the 2014 and 2017 curriculums, it is found that the American exceptionalism perspective was the more dominant perspective in the 2017 version, while revisionist had been the more dominant perspective in the 2014 version. Specifically, the 2017 version demonstrated an American exceptionalism perspective due to: support for the modern conservative movement, greater emphasis on the sanc- tity of America’s beginnings, wording differences in the two curriculums, and decreased emphasis on teaching historical thinking skills to students. The paper concludes that the 2014 conservative backlash affected the course curriculum in a negative manner and argues for the revisionist method of teaching history to students. Keywords: AP United States History Curriculum, Revisionist History, American Exceptionalism, K-12 history education, Conservative influences on historical teaching Introduction curriculum that promotes critical thinking of American history, even if that means questioning decisions in America’s past (Levy, dvanced Placement United States History, henceforth 2016). "Let the world hear your resilience," Pharrell Williams told a sell- out crowd of 50,000 who had gathered to remember vic- tims of a May 22 suicide bomb attack on Grande's concert in the city. The hastily-organized "One Love Manchester" event became one of the biggest single gatherings of musical talent this year, as stars lined-up for the concert dedicated to the 22 people killed and 116 injured, many of them children. Justin Bieber, Miley Cyrus, Katy Perry, Robbie Williams, Take That, Liam Gallagher, and Little Mix were among those who hit the stage, as fans held "We stand together" and "For our angels" signs. Mumford & Sons frontman Marcus Mumford opened the show after the crowd fell silent for a minute. Less than 24 hours before the concert got underway, Britain was rocked by another terrorist attack, in central London, in which seven people were killed and 48 injured.

  • No Tears Left to Cry”: Analyzing Space and Place of the Rock Concert Memorial
“No Tears Left to Cry”: Analyzing Space and Place of the Rock Concert Memorial MICHELLE PAUKEN CROMER In the fall of 2017, my husband and I traveled to London to see the European leg of the Metallica tour at the O2 Arena. We have always enjoyed participating in the collective experience that concerts bring—connecting with other music fans, singing along, wearing the right t-shirt, and waiting in anticipation of an encore. Though we were excited about seeing an American band overseas, what differed about this free-wheeling experience was that it was exactly five months after the bombing at the Ariana Grande concert in nearby Manchester, that killed twenty- two concert-goers. To add to this unease, the cue through security wrapped halfway around the O2; everyone slightly on edge, but no one complaining. Collectivity now had a different meaning. As this was not my first time seeing this band perform, I could not overlook a few differences. First, the engineers significantly reduced the pyrotechnics. Additionally, Metallica regularly plays a song called “One” in which a screen projects videos of World War II soldiers. Part of this song includes an audio of a round of gunfire and a bomb detonating. When the sound of the bomb exploded, an audible silence occurred, about as long as it takes to inhale. In that brief second, the possibility of what could occur crossed my mind, and likely in the minds of other attendees. These small decisions by both the performers and the spectators led to larger questions on how space, performance, and audience can create an epideictic rhetorical experience.

  • Ariana Grande
Ariana Grande Early Life Ariana Grande-Butera was born in Boca Raton, Florida, on the 26th June 1993. Her mother, Joan, ran a successful telephone and alarm company and her father, Edward, owned a graphic design company. Ariana’s parents and her older brother, Frankie, had moved from New York to Florida just before she was born. As a child, Ariana loved to sing and perform. When she wasn’t attending Pine Crest School, Ariana spent her time at a children’s theatre group. She played the lead character Annie in her first ever performance and went on to star in shows such as The Wizard of Oz and Beauty and the Beast. At the age of 10, Ariana helped to create a children’s singing group called Kids Who Care. The group performed at charity events and raised over half a million dollars for good causes in 2007 alone. Rise to Fame Many people enjoyed listening to Ariana sing. At the age of 8 years old, Ariana was already performing on cruise ships and with popular orchestras all around Florida. It was at this age that she first appeared on national television singing the USA’s national anthem, The Star-Spangled Banner, at a Florida Panthers ice hockey match. In 2008, when she was just 13 years old, Ariana first appeared on Broadway, starring a cheerleader called Charlotte in the musical 13. It wasn’t long until Ariana became serious about creating her own music. She flew across the country to Los Angeles and met with her managers. She told them that she wanted to make her own R&B album.
