THE MYSTERY, MEANING AND DISAPPEARANCE OF THE TEKHELET YOSEF GREEN AND PINCHAS KAHN And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying , "Speak to the people of Israel, and bid them that they make them fringes [tzitzit ] on the borders of their garments throughout their generations, and that they put upon the fringe of the borders a thread of blue [Petil Tekhelet]. And it shall be to you for a fringe, that you may look upon it, and remem- ber all the commandments of the Lord, and do them; and that you seek not after your own heart and your own eyes, which incline you to go astray ; That you may remember, and do all my command- 1 ments, and be holy to your God" (Num. 15:37-40). This text is climaxed by the commands to look upon the fringes, to remem- ber the commandments, and to do them. But, why and how do the fringes enable a person to become holy to your God ? The rabbinic interpretation and explication of these biblical verses and the disappearance of the tekhelet fringe will lead us to a rather surprising exposi- tion of talmudic mysticism. Our inquiry begins with a quote from T.B. Menahot 43b. The Talmud there first quotes from the biblical text in a Tannaitic source ( Baraita ), and then adds a critical point: "That you may look upon it and remember . and do them . Looking [upon it] leads to remembering [the commandments], and re- membering leads to doing them." This comment presumably relates to the issue of looking at the fringe in order to remember the commandments. -

This article will show that a very strong case עולם לתכן can be made that the original version of Aleinu read (=to establish to=) עולם לתקן the world under God’s sovereignty), and not perfect/improve the world under God’s sovereignty[2]). has no connection to the עולם תקון If so, the concept of Aleinu prayer.[3] —– It is reasonable to assume that Aleinu was already included in the Amidah of Rosh ha-Shanah (=RH) by the time of Rav (early 3rd century C.E.).[4] But no text of Aleinu is included in the Talmud, nor is a text of Aleinu included in any of the classical midrashim.[5] Therefore, we must look to later sources for texts of Aleinu. When is לתכן we do, we find that the reading found in the text of the RH Amidah in the Siddur Rav Saadiah Gaon (d. 942),[6] and in the text of the RH Amidah in the Mishneh Torah of the Rambam (d. 1204).[7] Moreover, it is found in numerous prayer texts from the Cairo Genizah that include this line of Aleinu.[8] For example, it is found in: 1) a fragment of the RH Amidah first published by Jacob Mann in 1925;[9] 2) a fragment of the RH Amidah first published by Richard Gottheil and William H. -

The Persian conquest of Jerusalem in 614CE compared with Islamic conquest of 638CE. Its Messianic nature and the role of the Jewish Exilarch By Ben Abrahamson and Joseph Katz Abstract: Explores the conquests of Jerusalem in 614CE and 638CE within the context of previous attempts at Jewish restoration. Discusses reasons for a Persian-Jewish alliance and later a Judeo-Arab alliance. In an attempt to reconcile contemporary sources, an account is given of Babylonian Jewish Exilarch Nechemiah ben Hushiel, his brother Shallum (Salmaan Farsi) and nephew Yakov (Ka'b Al-Ahbar) who played pivotal roles in these conquests. Proposes that the twelve men who went to Mecca to meet with the Prophet were Jewish refugees from Edessa, by way of Medina. The Magic of the Mezuzah in Rabbinic Literature
THE MAGIC OF THE MEZUZAH IN RABBINIC LITERATURE Eva-Maria Jansson Lund The notion that the mezuzah — the capsule containing a parchment strip on which is written Deut. 6:4-9 and 11:13-21 and which is attached to the doorposts of a Jewish home — is protective has been explained in different ways. Two different developments have been suggested: either the mezuzah was originally an amulet, which the Rabbis sought to theologize, or it was a religious object which fell victim to popular superstitious notions'. In this paper, where the study is delimited to the Talmudic and some Geonic material, I intend to propose another explanation to the origin and development of the idea of its protectiveness. The origin of the mezuzah as an object is obscure. The oldest references we have to it, e.g. in the Mishnah and the Tosefta, presuppose that it is an object on par with other religious objects, and that the affixing of the mezuzah is a mitsvah. To conclude that traditions found in later texts, regarding it as an amulet, are pre-Rabbinic and preserved unaffected by the Rabbinic mediation, is problematic. Discerning a popular influence, that is, a popular strata in the Talmudim, the She'iltot, Sefer Halakhot Gedolot and the Hekhalot literature, opposed to the views of the Rabbinic elite, is also difficult'. The statements in the Talmudim relating to the mezuzah can roughly be divided in two groups. The first one contains the statements concerning the physical execution of the mitsvah, what one might call the »technicalities«: what kind of leather to use, what ink to use, the layout of the text on the parchment, how to roll this etc. -
