FOR my last PresidentialAddress I present you with an enigma, a puzzle in Japanese folklore for which so far no satisfactorysolution has been found. The most that I can give is a clue or two. The problem is this. All over Japan, with the exception of the northern island Hokkaid5, villages and communities have been discoveredwhose inhabitantsclaim to be descended from a fugitive warrior,fleeing for his life afterthe defeat of his family in a sea battle in the late 12th century. Most of these villages have been found in isolated and inaccessiblespots; on islands, for example, or on the ends of capes, or tucked into inlets of the sea. But the majoritylie deep in mountains, in valleys so remote that they appear to have been cut off from the world until their discovery sometime during the last couple of centuries. The villages are known in general as Heike-dani,or 'valleys of the Heike,' after the surname of the vanquished clan. A map giving the distribution of these communities shows them to be scatteredin a wide double curve from the far north of the main island down to the semi-tropical Ryiikyii islands. Their greatest concentrationseems to be to the west and south. In Kyiishii, for example, there are thirty-six, in Shikoku twelve, while the mountainous Kinki district has revealedto date at least nineteen. There is an odd cluster of fourteen more in the Ryiikyii islands. Further north but still west, along the coast of the Japan Sea, at least a dozen more have come to light, while still further north another two dozen are to be found. It is only in the eastern district known as the Kant6, much of which is flat plain, and the urban sprawl of Tokyo, that the numbers fall to a mere seven. In all, more than a hundred of these strangeenclaves have been discovered,many of them hundreds of miles from the scene of the battle from which the warriors are believed to have fled. This took place in the year 1185 in a bay at the western end of the Inland Sea known as Dannoura. Although these villages tend to be in isolated spots, cut off from each other as well as from the rest of the world, they are said to preserve certain curious customs in common. Most of these appear to hark back to the aristocraticorigin of the warrior ancestor,and are hence jealouslypreserved by the communities as proof of their heroic lineage. All are said to observe in common, for example, a taboo on the colours red and white, the colours of the rival clans in the last battle. All are believed to preserve a certain antiquated mode of speech. Their songs anddances are held to betray an unmistakable elegance and refinement, and their women are believed to be paler skinned than their neighbours. Finally, their pride in their aristocraticblood forbids them to marryoutside the community. 140 CARMEN BLACKER Some of the families preserve a tangible relic of their mysterious noble forebear. This sometimes takes the form of a cup, sometimes of a sealed box which must on no account be opened, on pain of the ancestor'sluck or virtue being squandered.2 A few accounts of such communities have come down to us from the last century. A traveller from Niigata prefecture, one Suzuki Makiyuki, has left an account of an intrepid journey into the mountains in 1828 to a place called Akiyama. Here he discovered one such lost hamlet. He was astonished by the conditions of life, which seemed to him not only desperately poor and primitive, but at the same time quite unfamiliar,as though he had walked into a foreign country. He found a night's lodging in one of the better houses, and was shocked to see that when night fell the entire family slept together on the bare boards of the floor, without a single blanket or coverlet despite the cold. The women wore rough homespun garments,and were quite shamelessin pulling tip their skirtsto their thighs to catch lice and fleas. He was served boiled millet, mushroom soup and a bean soup with grey pellets in it too hard to swallow. Also a paste made of horse chestnuts boiled, skinned and mashed. The old patriarchof the family, Ichiemon by name, told him that the village was proud of its ancient customs, and in no circumstancespermitted any boy or girl to marryoutside. Should any girl do this, she was irrevocablycut off from her family, whom she could never hope to see again. There was no crime in the village, and no gambling. Unfortunatelythe travellerdoes not tell us the name of the warriorwhom they claimed as an ancestor.3 Again, Ernest Satow, one of the early English scholars of Japanese whose distinguishedwork laid the foundationfor those coming after, was given permissionin 1878 to make a journeyinto the mountainousregion of Tateyamaand Hida Takayama. 'Foreign travel' into the interior of Japan was still much restricted,and Satow, then a secretaryin the British Legation, may well have been the first foreigner to penetrate this unfamiliar region. The weather was atrocious, and the steep mountain paths so deep in mud and slush that he found himself more than a week overdue. On July 27th he wrote from the foot of Tateyama to Sir Harry Parkes, the British Minister in Tokyo, to apologise for his late return. Part of our route has lain through a country where distances are estimated only by guesswork, and concerning which it was impossible to obtain any information in Yedo. We have heard of an interesting community of people who inhabit a region called Arimine to the south of Tateyama, twenty miles from their nearest neighbours. They have inter-marriedfor several centuries past, in fact ever since they were heard of first, and live in patriarchalstyle, three or four marriedcouples under one roof, but with separate households. Like other secluded communities, they are said to be descendantsof the Heike fugitives. If we had a few days to spare, I should certainly have visited them, in order to learn more with my own eyes and ears ... Had the rains lifted by the end of July, and had Sir Harry Parkes been less of a martinet,we might have had a full descriptionof a Heike community from this remote part of Japan, by so acute an observer as Ernest Satow. Concerning the discovery of these lost villages by the outside world an odd story, clearly a legend, is cited in several cases. From what were believed to be unexplored heights, the story runs, a red lacquer cup was found floating down the river. Scouts were sent upstreamto investigateand came upon the hidden hamlet. The apparitionof the cup was explainedby the fact that the village included families of the wood carvers known as kijiya, who made wooden cups and bowls with a device called a rokuroor potter's wheel, said to have been revealed to them by their founding ancestor. They were a 'special' people, differentfrom the agriculturalfolk below, who were reputedto THE EXILED WARRIORAND THE HIDDEN VILLAGE 141 have been travellers, moving like gypsies from place to place until they eventually chose to settle down.5 Let us now returnto the circumstanceof the last battle, in the year 1185, and of the flight of the defeated warriors. The Heike family first rose to glittering power and wealth in the middle 12th century. Its sons occupied the highest positions in the land. One of its daughterswas married to an Emperor, and became the mother of another Emperor. But eventually the family overreacheditself, became arrogantand proud, and at last reaped the Buddhist reward of arroganceand pride in a disastrous fall. Another clan, the Genji, set itself to overthrowthe Heike, and by and by, after a long civil war, pressedthem so hard that they were forced to flee from the capital eastwards. They took with them in their flight the child EmperorAntoku, then only seven years old, his mother the Lady Kenrei-monin, and the whole retinue of the Court. These elegant people were finally compelled to take refuge on ships, in a bay in the inland sea called Dannoura. And there, in the year 1185, the clan was finally and irrevocablydefeated. The nurse of the child EmperorAntoku took the little boy in her arms, and saying to him, 'There is a wonderful city at the bottom of the sea called the Pure Land of Bliss. That is where I am taking you,' she leapt with the child over the side of the ship.

    ONCE AND FUTURE WARRIORS The Samurai IN JAPANESE HISTORY By Karl Friday he samurai exercise a powerful hold on popular imaginations, both in and out of Japan, rival- T ing cherry blossoms, geisha, and Sony as Japanese cultural icons. Emerging during the early part of the Heian period (794–1185), these war- riors—known as bushi, tsuwamono, musha, mononofu, and other names at various times in their history—dominated the political and economic land- scape by the early 1200s, and ruled outright from the late fourteenth to the late nineteenth century. Their story is, therefore, central to the history of premodern and early modern Japan, and has become the subject of dozens of popular and scholarly books. It also inspires a veritable Mt. Fuji of misperceptions and misin- formation—a karate instructor in Japan once told me of a New Zealand man who came to live and train with him, and who was absolutely convinced that samurai were still living on some sort of reservation on the back side of a nearby mountain! Prior to Western influence, pre- modern Japanese society viewed imperial portraits as religious objects for private, commemorative use; only imperial family members and close supporters viewed these portraits. The Confucian notion of filial piety and the Buddhist tradition of tsuizen influenced the production of these commemorative or mortuary portraits. By the Meiji period, however, Western portrait practice had affected how Japan perceived its imperial portraiture. Because the Meiji government socially and politically constructed the ideal role of Emperor Meiji and used the portrait as a means of propaganda to elevate the emperor to the status of a divinity, it instituted controlled public viewing of the images of Japanese emperors.

I began working at the British Museum in London in 1993. It was at this time that I saw real Japanese swords on display in the Japanese Gallery. I had always thought that they were special, but seeing them in person I was incredibly moved by their beauty. The information panels explained their deep cultural and spiritual significance to Japan. Rather than a revelation, this experience was like a confirmation of something I had felt for a long time. In 1998, after a series of serendipitous events, I attained a position in the Department of Japanese Antiquities. There, under the guidance of the head of department, Victor Harris, I was given responsibility for the day to day care of the Japanese arms and armor collections. My appointment also involved trips to Japan to courier the department’s objects back and forth. Whenever an opportunity arose, I would take some of my annual leave to extend these trips in Japan, where, with the help of my Japanese colleagues, I was able to study many fine Japanese swords in major col- lections and shrines, and to meet various craftsmen. When reading sword books, it is very rare to find one that does not mention the story of Emperor Gotoba and the Gobankaji.

    Taira Tadamori was annoyed. Very annoyed. A Chinese ship lay offshore loaded with goods that meant hefty profits. But here too were the pests he had he had tried to dodge: Dazaifu inspectors intent on boarding the ship, interrogating the captain, and inspecting the cargo so they could nab a considerable part of it in the name of taxes and fees. The ship’s captain was fuming. Had Taira Tadamori forgotten his assurance that at this out-of-the-way anchorage there would be no hungry officials? On the strength of that promise he had by-passed the familiar port of Hakata to sail a long, looping course southward around Kyushu’s western outreaches through island-clogged passages and bays then back northward more than sixty miles to the farthest shore of the gulf called the Ariake Sea. Here, he had been assured, was the security of the estate that Tadamori managed. Tadamori tried to cool the irate Chinese. He insisted that he could handle the situation. As manager he represented the owners of the estate, and though it was held by a temple in the capital that temple had been founded by imperial order and the estate was in fact part of the lanes belonging to the imperial family. In this year 1133 the head of the imperial family was the retired emperor Toba, the most influential man in the capital. Toba took a keen interest in the family lands. He was zealous in expanding them and he would not look kindly on any attempt to cut into the revenue they yielded.

That volume was first published in 1994, with a revised compact edition published in 1999. The main text of Shinto jiten is translated into English and publicly available in its entirety at the Kokugakuin University website as "The Encyclopedia of Shinto" (EOS). This English edition of the chronology is based on the one that appeared in the revised version of the Jiten. It is already available online, but it is also being published in book form in hopes of facilitating its use. The original Japanese-language chronology was produced by Inoue Nobutaka and Namiki Kazuko. The English translation was prepared by Carl Freire, with assistance from Kobori Keiko. Translation and publication of the chronology was carried out as part of the "Digital Museum Operation and Development for Educational Purposes" project of the Institute for Japanese Culture and Classics, Organization for the Advancement of Research and Development, Kokugakuin University. Is it possible that Emperor Antoku1, Tomomori2 and Kiyotsune3 never drowned beneath the waves of the western seas? Or could those who died have been imposters? Courtiers’ diaries from 1184 and 1185 had already recorded false reports of the death in battle of some generals and tales of substitute heads being presented for inspection.4 So, even amongst the huge quantity of Heike tales generated in Japan in the Kamakura, Muromachi and Tokugawa periods, this is a story that would have possessed a considerable degree of believability. However, we must also note that there was a formal recording in the offi cial court records of the deaths of Emperor Antoku, Tomomori and Kiyotsune, based on a report from Minamoto no Yoshitsune. It was these records that would go on to become the unalterable offi cial his- tory. The prologue of the 1747 puppet play Yoshitsune senbon zakura (Yoshitsune & The Thousand Cherry Trees) begins by summoning up that offi cial history. Ichikawa Ennosuke III’s recent kabuki production of parts of the play, Yoshitsune senbon zakura: Ikari Tomomori / Yoshinoyama (Yoshitsune & The Thousand Cherry Trees: Tomomori & The Anchor / Mt. Yoshino, Shinbashi Enbujō, 1987), was greeted by largely positive reviews. If it had been acknowl- edged that playwrights Akimoto Matsuyo and Shinoda Masahiro had in fact created a new play by combining the original with other texts by Chikamatsu Monzaemon, then Ennosuke’s experiment would be beyond the scope of this essay.

    chapter 3 Taira no Tokushi’s Birth of Emperor Antoku Naoko Gunji* Introduction Royal births were critical events for the imperial family and court. Ensuring a safe birth required over hundreds of rituals performed by numerous specialists spanning a long period. It also involved the use of sumptuous and empowered objects: clothes, accessories, talismans, medicines, and even the royal body itself. This chapter will examine a series of rituals associated with an imperial consort’s delivery of a prince in the late Heian period (794–1185). The woman under discussion in this chapter is Taira no Tokushi 平徳子 (also known as Kenreimon-in 建礼門院; 1155–1213?), the principal consort of Emperor Taka- kura 高倉天皇 (1161–1181; r. 1168–1180), and the baby is the future Emperor Antoku 安徳天皇 (1178–1185; r. 1180–1185). Childbirths and birth rituals in premodern Japan have been studied through perspectives of diverse disciplines. Literature specialists have examined child- births and rituals thereof as a rite of passage in the life of a mother and of a child.1 Rituals to pray for the conception of a child and for a safe delivery involved Buddhist rituals and yin-yang practices, which have received much investigation by scholars of religious studies.2 Medicine, though it was not entirely separable from Buddhist and yin-yang rituals, played an important part in childbirth, too, as has been shown by historians’ research on early medical manuals such as the tenth-century Ishinpō 医心方 (Essentials of medicine).3 Art historians have analyzed birth scenes depicted in picture scrolls and iden- tified types of objects used in labor and birth rituals.4 All this scholarship has * I would like to express my deepest gratitude to Karen Gerhart for the opportunity to present this essay at the workshop on which this volume is based and for her advice and encour- agement.

The accession ceremonies thus begun found their termination in the daijösai, the Great Festival of First Fruits, in November 1990. These elaborate ceremonials have attracted worldwide attention (as did the funeral ceremonies of Shöwa-tennö), and the interest thus aroused has been met by a host of publications attempting to explain the rites and their historical and religious background, if mostly only along well-trodden and sometimes even misleading paths (e.g. Bock 1990). We shall not try to add to this literature but content ourselves with focusing our attention on a small but nevertheless important item: the sword, one of the Three Regalia. The sword in itself is a symbol of power. It is with the help of the sword that a reign is established; it is with the help of the sword that a reign is maintained. But the sword is not only a symbol of power. Taken together with the other two regalia, the mirror and the jewels, and in its proper context, it ai5pears to be an indispensable sign of legitimation. This shows unmistakably that not just any sword will do: as a sign of legitimation it must be a sword that in itself is connected with the founding of this legitimation.

Painted folding screens like this one were commonly used as room dividers and decora- tive backdrops for ceremonial occasions. This example, probably made for a samurai patron, is decorated with scenes from a popular war tale describing the exploits of legendary war- riors. The sumptuous gold leaf background seen here served a dual purpose: symbolically, it makes a statement about the samurai’s wealth and power, but in practical terms it also provided a reflective surface, helping to illuminate the dark interior spaces of the castle. What is depicted here? The subject matter is derived from a chronicle of military history known as The Tales of the Heike. Written in the 1200s, The Tales of the Heike recounts the war between two samurai clans, the Taira (or Heike) and Minamoto (or Battles at Ichi-no-tani and Yashima (detail; B63D8+).
