8 nightspots September 28, 2011 Who’s that queen that does Fridays at @mosphere? We forgot her name! DANCING ABOUT ARCHITECTURE by Marc “Moose” Moder BILLIE RAY MARTIN INTOXICATES WITH ‘THE OPIATES’ Last year, former Moloko lead singer Róisín Murphy put out a hot house single called “Momma’s Place,” in which she lightly schooled Lady Gaga and the like for not being the original in her seemingly original visual and vocal styles. Well, in October (8th to be exact), when Billie Ray Martin debuts her new project, The Opiates, she should give Róisín a bit of a mention.

Back in 1990, Billie Ray debuted with Electribe 101, with a style not heard yet in the clubs: a lazy, chill feel juxtaposed against . Moloko and Lisa Stansfield, as well as most chillout artist of the following decade, would be touched a bit by Billie Ray’s style. Martin broke from Electribe in 1996 with her solo debut Deadline For My Memories, featuring the big club hit “.” Every gay boy I knew at the time lived for that CD, Moloko’s debut, and Kristine W’s one good album. She released a follow-up in 2001, but never really captured the vibrancy of Deadline.

Now, along with musician Robert Solheim under the name The Opiates, Billie Ray seems to be back and stronger than ever with Hollywood Under The Knife. Instead of trying to recapture her mid-’90s club sounds, she and Robert have gone back to a bit of Electribe with a giant dash of Violator-era . Robert’s style hearkens to Alan Wilder-era Depeche with deep atmospherics and lovely minimalism, while BR paints a picture of the entertainment industry and its victims the way Marianne Faithful did with the more common, downtrodden folk of her Grammy-nominated Broken English.

If moody, exposed style is not what you want from your Billie Ray Martin, and you need some more of her soulful style from the solo era, skip right to “Silent Comes The Nighttime” (my choice for a single) where she brings on her signature wail, or the Morodo-ish remix of Candy Coated Crime, a track eroticizing CSI! Either way, The Opiates are addicting and intoxicating, to say the least.

Della was digging through her closet looking for a magenta tube dress that had either fallen from its hanger or walked out on some queen’s back after last weekend’s gin soaked, impromtu dress-up party. She uncovered a silver and blue sequined and beaded corset tucked in the back corner. It barely sparkled through the dust. Her heart skipped a beat.

She had gotten it in 1985, when she was just a boy. It was one of those rare October days in Chicago when the sun was giving off heat like it was still summer. Her friends had recently started getting sick at an alarming rate. The San Francisco girls were in town visiting, trying to escape their own gloom and doom back home. All the midwest had to offer was great weather. So Della was determined to find something to take everyone’s mind off of everything. She grabbed her purse and headed out the door and down Fullerton Avenue. Squinting into the beaming sunlight, Della saw something sparkling wildly up ahead. When she got closer she saw table after table of glittering dresses, tops, leggings and more. Tiny outfits in every color covered in beads and sequins and crystal baubles she had never seen before. She almost fell over. The tables were being guarded by a fleet of Salvation Army marms. “Excuse me,” Della asked a stonefaced woman. “What’s going on here?” The marm explained that one of the renters of the storage building behind them was the Ice Capades. They had recently replaced their traditional show with something called the Snorks and had donated the old costumes for resale and write-off. Because they were so heavy and there were so many, the marms walked card tables down from their headquarters in Lakeview rather than move the costumes to a store. They set up shop right then and there. And everything was twenty-five cents each.

Della thanked the Lord above—out loud—and the marm gave her an “amen.” Della ran to the nearest pay phone as fast as her hand-me-down pumps could carry her. She made three calls. Within minutes the sidewalk sale was swarmed with queens and boys clacking about. Fred even brought his insanely large boom box and turned on the radio. This was now a party with quarters and singles flying towards the marms as everyone adored, tried on, and purchased the seemingly unending supply of glitz. Muscley boys helped marms haul out more boxes. From behind a large crate a voice cried out, “We have headresses, people!” and it was answered by a glorious cheer. It didn’t take long before every garment was snatched up. Della was decked from head to toe and sparkled like Liberace’s evil twin sister. She was a vision in silver and blue with a plumage that would rival a gay peacock. She was, after all, first in line. She grabbed Fred with the music and barked, “Follow me ladies!” She led the twinkling mob—at least fifty strong—down the street, toward the lake and eventually to the Belmont Rocks. Stopping traffic and gaining power along the way, throwing out glittery bits of frocks to boys they came across along the way. They danced along to Donna Summer and Culture Club with flickering limbs and smiling faces. A sea of reflective celebration.

Now Della brushes the dust off of her corset and gives it a gentle kiss. Friends may come and go, but real sparkle never dies. Forgetting about the magenta dress, Della stands, deciding that this was what she would wear on stage tonight.
