The Division continues to provide opportunities to the University community through campus recreation and wellness programs. The club sport program engages over 1,500 students through 37 unique teams, some of which compete at a national level, while intramural sports involves nearly 5,000 students, faculty, and staff each year. Highlights of the club-sport program included Sailing winning its conference championship and finishing second at the Match Race National Championship, and Women’s Rugby placing second at the Ivy League Championship.

Recreation engaged nearly 75,000 program-wide participation opportunities this year, and drop-in recreation serves a member base of 25,000. Over 875,000 swipes were recorded at the Pottruck and Fox Fitness Centers, and 72% of undergraduate students and 50% of graduate students visited the Pottruck or Fox Fitness Centers during the year. In addition, The Hecht and Hamlin Tennis Centers attract 20,000 uses annually. Champions from Penn Rec’s Competitive League Summer Softball. Penn became the first Ivy League institution to be recognized by the Healthier Campus Initiative, in large part due to the efforts of campus recreation. In addition, new wellness programs included Fitness in Recovery, Take Your Professor to Workout, Host Your Class at the Gym, and Yoga at Franklin Field. The Gimbel Gymnasium HVAC project was completed and provides an enhanced experience for its users. Finally, the Pottruck Center was ranked #2 nationally in University fitness centers by College Consensus. Penn Rec offers chances to try free Penn FIT Classes to members during Demo Days.

The Division of Recreation and Intercollegiate Athletics and the Penn Champions Club achieved record-setting fundraising results during the 2018-19 fiscal year beginning July 1, 2018 and concluding June 30, 2019. During that time, the Penn Champions Club raised $63.4 million in commitments towards Penn Athletics’ highest priorities, representing a new total commitment record for Penn Athletics. Fundraising was focused on annual fund support, endowment gifts and capital projects. The previous fundraising record for Penn Athletics was $23.5 million recorded in 2017-18. In addition to setting a record for overall commitments in a given fiscal year, the Penn Champions Club set individual fundraising records for annual fund commitments ($10.4M), endowment commitments ($16.0M) as well as capital project commitments ($37.1M). This marks the third straight year the Penn Champions Club has raised more than $20M in commitments. In addition, total cash-in for the Division was the second highest amount in Penn Athletics history, finishing the fiscal year at $20.6M. FY17 was the only other year with higher totals when $23.4M in cash was raised. The historic fundraising year helped the Penn Champions Club surpass its overall fundraising goal of $150M million for the Game Onward Campaign for the Future of Penn Athletics by raising a total of $157.4M through June 30, 2019. The funds raised for Penn Athletics are part of the University-wide campaign, The Power of Penn: Advancing Knowledge for Good. Three initiatives were completed in FY19 to engage donors and increase fundraising dollars. The Red and Blue Challenge, a one-day giving challenge that launched on Giving Tuesday between alumni, family and friends of each varsity program and club sports resulted in over 1,800 donors and $600,000, more than doubling the total amount raised compared to Giving Tuesday last year. The Women’s Giving Challenge was completed in February to increase giving and engagement for the women’s varsity programs, with an emphasis on encouraging varsity alumnae participation through bonus challenge incentives. During the month-long fundraising challenge, over 380 Penn Athletics alumni, family and friends generously gave more than $290,000 in support of varsity programs with a women’s team, including over $100,000 in new and increased gifts. Lastly, the Penn Proud campaign encouraged student-athlete and staff giving resulting over 800 student-athlete donors. As a new stewardship initiative, over 600 student-athletes from every varsity program participated in one of three thank-a-thons held throughout the academic year, collectively handwriting over 5,000 thank you cards to donors. Finally, the Penn Athletics Legacy Circle, Penn Athletics’ planned giving society, added 22 members in FY19 to reach a total of 162. (Eleven new members were added in FY18 and there were 129 members added in FY17, the inaugural year of the society). DEVELOPMENT COMMUNITY MATTERS

Youth outreach programs such as the Young Quakers partnership with the Netter Center, Beat the Streets, and the Classroom Champions program are just some of the efforts made by the Division to enrich the lives of those in the local community.

Through a partnership with the Netter Center and support from the ’s Office, a civic engagement position was added to coordinate the volunteer efforts of Penn Athletics. Community matters is one of the five core values of the Division and the new Civic Engagement Coordinator has helped ensure that serving the members of our community is a priority. The Young Quakers partnership with the Netter Center continues to serve as the gold standard for Penn Athletics, with the lacrosse and track & field programs spending time weekly with local elementary school children.

Additional programs like Beat the Streets, Girls Inc., and Classroom Champions are well- established and newer programs like Friends of Jaclyn, Uplifting Athletes, and Team IMPACT have allowed Penn student-athletes to connect with those in need. In total, more than 80% of intercollegiate teams are involved in community service in some regard throughout the year and there has been a 140% increase in teams participating in consistent community-service programs. Selected club sport teams are also working with Girls, Inc. and other service projects, and a pilot program for community schools to use the Pottruck Center during less-utilized hours is being developed.

For the fourth-straight year, members of Penn Track & Field joined forces with USATF to host Run, Jump, Throw at a local elementary school in leadup to the Penn Relays. Women’s rowing was the latest program from Penn to add a child to its team through Team IMPACT. CAPITAL PLANNING THE PENN RELAYS

The Division has made significant progress regarding capital projects and planning in the past year. Construction of the renovated squash facility is underway and on schedule for a Fall 2019 completion, and planning continues around the indoor training facility, Franklin Field team operations complex, baseball stadium, and boathouse renovation projects. An on-site kitchen in the lower level of the Tse Center to service the concession and catering needs of the Division opened in January through a partnership with Aramark.

Phase two of the Franklin Field concrete restoration project began in May 2019, and the Division received University approval for new windows and HVAC in The , with construction planned for Summer 2020. The artificial turf on Adams and Dunning-Cohen Fields will be replaced in Summer 2020.

Schematic design of the Franklin Field Team Operations upgrades has been completed with a projected construction start date of December 2020 (dependent on fundraising), and full design of the Indoor Training Facility has been completed, with construction planned to begin in Summer 2020. The feasibility study of the Madeira Boathouse was completed in the Fall of 2018 with the advancement of design reliant on fundraising. Other projects dependent on fundraising include: Wrestling Facility Relocation, scoreboard replacement in Franklin Field, Hall of Fame/Student-Athlete Fueling Station, Ace Adams Field enhancements, and Sheerr Pool upgrades.
