A BANNER INTERCOLLEGIATE HIGHLIGHTS YEAR... The 2018-19 academic year was a banner campaign for Penn Athletics. Intercollegiate programs won six Ivy titles, the third most all- time, and the most since 1985-86. Men’s Lacrosse won the Ivy title and reached the NCAA quarterfinal round, while Women’s Track & Field repeated as both Indoor and Outdoor Ivy Heps champions. Nia Akins (Track & Field) was the runner-up in the 800 meters at the NCAA Indoor and Outdoor Championships. The Division exceeded its FY19 fundraising goal by $44 million and met the Game Onward Campaign goal with two years remaining. The renovation of the squash facility is progressing and will be completed this fall. The Division successfully celebrated the 125th running of the Penn Relays, and attendance for football and men’s basketball increased significantly. The T. Gibbs Kane, Jr. W’69 Director of Athletics and Recreation, Dr. M. Grace Calhoun, was named chair of the NCAA Division I Council and received the National Association of College Directors of Athletics (NACDA) Athletic Director of the Year Award for the Football Championship Subdivision. INTERCOLLEGIATE HIGHLIGHTS Ivy League Championships Penn Athletics continues to reach nearly unprecedented heights with regard to Ivy League championships. Six intercollegiate programs (Women’s Soccer, Women’s Indoor Track and Field, Women’s Basketball, Women’s Outdoor Track and Field, Men’s Lacrosse and Men’s Lightweight Rowing) captured Ivy titles. The last time Penn won more Ivy titles in one season was 1985-86 and the six titles are tied for the third most all-time. In addi- tion, the 21 championships since 2015-16 are the most in a four-year span since 1984-85 to 1987-88. Women’s soccer defeated Brown to capture a share of Women’s track and field won championships in eight the Ivy League championship for the first time since different events to win back-to-back Ivy League 2010. INTERCOLLEGIATE HIGHLIGHTS INTERCOLLEGIATE HIGHLIGHTS Men’s Lacrosse secured the Ivy League regular-season and tournament titles, won an NCAA first-round game at Franklin Field, reached the NCAA Quarterfinals and finished the season ranked fifth in the nation. Women’s Lacrosse was in the NCAA Championship field for the 13th straight season, the fifth-longest streak in the country, while Women’s Soccer won its first Ivy title since 2010. Women’s Indoor Track and Field won its second straight Ivy title, going back-to-back for the first time since 1987-88, and Women’s Outdoor Track and Field also won consecutive titles for the first time since 1985-86. The EARC Sprints win by the Men’s Lightweight Rowing Varsity Eight, considered the Ivy title for that sport, was the first for Penn since 1976. Men’s Lightweight Rowing also competed at the Henley Royal Regatta in England for the first time since 1998. Men’s Tennis captured the ECAC Indoor Men’s Basketball won the Big 5 crown Tennis title. Seventy percent of Penn’s varsity programs finished in the top half of the Ivy League regular season standings, the second-best performance in the past decade. Over the past three seasons, 71 percent of Penn’s teams have finished in the top half,the best three-year performance since 1974-76. In addition to the six Ivy championship teams, four programs finished second and six finished in third. Men’s Basketball won its first Philadelphia Big 5 title since 2002 and Men’s Tennis won the ECAC Indoor Championship for the first time since 2007. Penn Athletics also achieved national success. Nia Akins (Women’s Indoor Track & Field) was the NCAA runner-up in the 800 meters while Women’s Squash student-athlete Reeham Salah was named a First-Team All-American for the fourth time. Men’s Squash finished the season third in the nation, Women’s Squash was eighth, and Fencing finished tenth nationally. In the Learfield Director’s Cup standings, which rewards broad-based success in collegiate athletic programs, Penn ranked 64th nationally Men’s Lightweight Rowing at the Henley (out of more than 350 Division I institutions). It is the second highest Royal Regatta finished for Penn Athletics since the program began in 1994. Penn was sixth nationally in the NCAA Academic Progress Rate rankings with 15 teams ranked in the top 10 percent of their sport. Of that group, 13 recorded perfect multi-year APR scores. Mark Andrew of Men’s Swimming won his fourth straight Ivy title in the 400 individual medley and was a First-Team All- American. Seven student-athletes received eight major Ivy League individual awards: Christian Scafidi (Pitcher of the Year, Baseball), Eleah Parker (Defensive Player of the Year, Women’s Basketball), Erin Barry (Midfielder of the Year, Women’s Lacrosse), Cami Nwokedi (Defensive Player of the Year, Women’s Soccer), Iuliia Bryzgalova (Player of the Year, Women’s Tennis), Calvary Rogers (Most Outstanding Performer, Outdoor Ivy Heps), Nia Akins (Most Outstanding Performer, Indoor and Outdoor Ivy Heps). Four coaches won a total of five Ivy League Coach of the Year awards (Steve Dolan, Women’s Indoor and Outdoor Track and Field; Colin Farrell, Men’s Lightweight Rowing; Mike McLaughlin, Women’s Basketball; and Mike Murphy, Men’s Lacrosse). The Penn women’s distance medley relay became the first Ivy League women’s relay to win a Championship of America event at Penn Relays in April. Additionally, 82 student-athletes received first-team All-Ivy recognition, 63 received academic honors and 11 were named to the Friars Senior Society of the University of Pennsylvania.
