The materials and atrium (room) are ready. Now you are eager, and a little terrified, to prepare to be with a group of children and other adults. Initially, you may be an observer, an assistant or the lead catechist. It has always been a great consolation to me, that we are never alone in the atrium. The Holy Spirit is always with us — willing and able to be the true Teacher both of the children and the adults. Together we grow in faith. It is an even greater consolation that for each session we can always depend on the Holy Spirit to guide and enrich our preparation as catechists. How is this possible? First, quietly and confidently, we acknowledge our desire for the help of the Local Meeting for Holy Spirit. We try not to tell the Holy Catechists and Friends Spirit what we want to do – but rather we try to listen to his desire for us. Family and Marriage Ministry Today and All the Days of Your Life

The diocesan office will be offering the pre-Cana retreat, Today and All the Days of Your Life, for engaged couples on June 8 at Cathedral Square. Presented in a retreat format, the day is an opportunity for couples to reflect on the words and phrases of the vows they will exchange during the wedding rite. Registration fee for the program is $80/couple and includes meals and materials. Registration forms are available online FAITH or by contacting Jean Kastenholz by email. The diocesan pre-Cana calendar outlining other marriage preparation programs is updated

regularly and can be accessed online at the diocesan website.

Marriage: Life & Love in the Divine Plan

“Couples face many challenges to building and sustaining a strong marriage. Conditions in contemporary society do not always support marriage. For example, many couples struggle to balance home and work responsibilities; others bear serious economic and social burdens. Some challenges, however, are fundamental in the sense that they are directed at the very meaning and purposes of marriage.” [from Love and Life in the Divine Plan, the USCCB Pastoral Letter on Marriage, 2009.]

As people in our country await the decision of the Supreme Court regarding the hearings on California’s Proposition 8 and the Defense of Marriage Act, our Church’s ministry will continue in a spirit of witness and service to promote, support, and accompany married couples and those wishing to be married. The U.S. Conference pastoral letter on marriage, Love and Life in the Divine Plan, is available online as a “study document” with glossary and links to further resources. Acknowledging that growing in an understanding of the vocation to marriage begins long before the proposal and engagement, this means that the document is also intended for parish leaders of religious education and youth ministry; and not just for the members of your parish pre-Cana teams, wedding coordinators, or sponsor couples. The full document can be found online at http://www.usccb.org/issues-and-action/marriage-and-family/ marriage/love-and-life/

Family Perspectives in the Year of Faith Looking for a way to affirm, challenge and empower families in your parish during the Year of Faith? Family Perspectives are short articles that provide a weekly reflection on the Sunday readings from a family perspective. Use them as inserts in your weekly bulletin, office newsletter, or on the parish website. A continued service of the diocesan family life office for over ten years, the articles are written by Bud Ozar, former director of the family life office in Detroit. The year’s worth of articles is posted on the diocesan website under the resource page for Faith Formation.

Parent Guides to Human Sexuality The chastity education program of the Archdiocese of New York has published a new resource: Parent Guides to Human Sexuality, a set of three concrete resources for parents of children ages 5 to 19 to educate themselves in the Catholic Church’s teachings regarding human sexuality. The Parent Guides to Human Sexuality were the fruit of collaboration between the family life, respect life, catechetical, and education offices of the Archdiocese of New York. The Parent Guides to Human Sexuality were developed to help parents in three specific ways:  To provide parents with specific knowledge of the Catholic Church’s teachings regarding human sexuality and ways that they can educate their children in the faith in a developmentally appropriate way with the specific references to church teachings from the Bible, the Catechism of the Catholic Church, The Truth and Meaning of Human Sexuality (Pontifical Council of the Family), Catechetical Formation in Chaste Living (United States Council of Catholic Bishops), and other prominent church documents.  To present parents with an overview of each developmental stage in their child’s life so that they can individually meet the needs of their son or daughter at a time that is appropriate for each child.  To empower parents and encourage them to joyfully embrace the active role in their children’s life, especially when it comes to speaking about topics of human sexuality. These guides were developed to not only be used to meet the needs of the parents within the Archdiocese of New York but to serve as a catechetical resource for all parents throughout the country. More information as well as previews of each of the Parent Guides visit http://www.flrl.org/Chastity.htm. 8

We thank you for the pastoral leadership of Bishop Walter Hurley these past eight years and ask you to bless him as he soon completes his ministry as our bishop.

We celebrate your calling forth our new bishop-elect, David John Walkowiak, to lead us forward in faith. As we joyfully welcome him into our midst, pour forth the gifts of your Holy Spirit to strengthen him for his ministry in our church and the West Michigan community. Through his faithful response to your call, may he come to know the vibrant faith and the love and support of the clergy, religious and lay people of the Diocese of Grand Rapids.

United with our bishop in the mission of the Eternal Good Shepherd, we make this prayer through your son, Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God for ever and ever. Amen
