The American Southwest Conference, one of the largest intercollegiate athletic conferences in NCAA Division III, will celebrate its 15th anniversary in May of 2011.

Founded in May 1996 to provide a structure for intercollegiate athletics among the member institutions, the American Southwest Conference includes former members of the Texas Intercollegiate Athletic Association (TIAA) and other institutions outside the Texas border. From the eight founding institutions to today’s present group of 15 college and universities, the ASC encompasses institutions sharing similar educational and athletic philosophies. Spreading across four states — Texas, Arkansas, Louisiana and Mississippi — the ASC offers student-athletes competition in 16 sports with opportunity for advancement in both conference and NCAA Division III championships.

The American Southwest Conference has a multidimensional mission to create an environment characterized by opportunities to learn, friendly competition and activities for the conference membership. ASC members believe team and individual sports provide learning opportunities, and its membership strives to create an athletics environment supportive of teaching and learning. Conference and NCAA resources also provide student-athletes, coaches and administrators access to academic, leadership, sportsmanship and career enhancement opportunities.

Traditional standards of ethical conduct and fair play are respected among the ASC members. To guarantee the integrity of the association, the membership is committed to furthering the philosophy and policies of the National Collegiate Athletic Association Division III and the Conference.

3 2010 CRU PREVIEW

There are not many football programs in the country that would consider a 10-win season, a co-conference championship and a trip to the Second Round of the NCAA Division III National Championships a disappointment, but that’s exactly how the Cru feels when it looks back on the 2009 season. UMHB had its 33-game ASC winning streak snapped at Mississippi College and then turned the ball over a school-record seven times in the playoff loss to Linfi eld College. A group of 46 returning lettermen has been using those two losses as motivation entering the 2010 campaign. The offense will once again build around a punishing and dominating ground game. RB Quincy Daniels is back for a senior season and is completely healthy again, shedding the knee brace that slowed him at times last season. Daniels, a Preseason All-American, still rushed for 982 yards and 14 touchdowns last season and he can break every major UMHB and ASC career rushing record with a solid season this year. Darius Wilson is the early favorite as the top back-up after starring for the Cru junior varsity last season and Stephen Salinas and Kortlin White also have a chance to contribute as they battle it out with a talented and deep class of newcomers at the position. Roger Sanchez, Blake Dempsey and Bobby Whan all return with varsity experience at fullback and they will compete for the starting job in the fall camp. Kyle Noack is the starting quarterback entering fall camp after throwing for 778 yards and 9 TD’s last season. LiDarral Bailey was second on the team in rushing with 956 yards and 9 TD’s last season and he also threw for 677 yards and 7 more scores. The reigning ASC Freshman of the Year will also get playing time as he spells Noack at quarterback. The Cru will need a newcomer to step up and claim the #3 QB job this fall. Ervin Johnson is the leading returning receiver and the coaches rave about his improve- ment during the offseason as he continues to develop as a threat in the passing game. Tracy Cooper, Tariekus Ellis and Geoff Myles all played well at receiver for the varsity last season and the coaches are expecting big things from Tucker Glaske as he makes the move up from the junior varsity this season. David Wassermann is moving to wide receiver after playing tight end last season and he should be involved in multiple-receiver sets. Several young receivers will also get chances to make an impact in reserve roles. Brett McGee was an All-ASC tight end last season and he returns as the starter. Trey Hazelton and Brady Engelmohr were top reserves at that position last season and the position could also get a boost with the return of Jonathan Green. Green started as a freshman before sitting out last season at the University of Houston. The offensive line will be headlined by a pair of Preseason All-Americans in center Dustin Davis and tackle Max Taylor. Those two players will anchor a line that also includes returning start- ers in All-ASC guard Ryan Krause and tackle Nate Menkin. Blake Heller is the early favorite to win the other starting guard spot with Aaron Grill also fi guring in the mix thanks to his versatility and athleticism. Alan Richard, Sam Maxie, Michael Coles, William Samford and Rudy Nerio all split last season between the varsity and junior varsity and will provide depth along the offensive front. Several freshmen also have a chance to catch the coach’s eye this fall and could play their way onto the two-deep alongside the veterans. 4 2010 CRU PREVIEW

For the fi rst time in a long time, the Cru does not have a marquee returner on defense, but there is still plenty of experienced talent on hand for the defense to build around this season. UMHB returns 11 players who started at least one game last season. The defensive front may the biggest area of strength as the linebackers and secondary mature. DE’s Micah Spicer, Brenson Bristow, Korey Steward and Zack Dunnam all saw signifi cant playing time last season. Spicer developed into an All-ASC performer and fi nished with 11.0 tackles for loss and 3.5 sacks. Bristow added 3.5 sacks and Steward and Dunnam also played well in reserve roles. DT’s David Danforth, Chris Brent, Darnell Armstrong and Oscar Schmidt all showed fl ashes last season and both Brent and Danforth have the ability to be dominant. Despite all of the returning talent, there are high expectations for several freshmen to contribute this season. Jerrad Jefferson, Javicz Jones and Ben Beckworth all return at linebacker and are the early favorites to claim the starting spots. Jones, Jefferson and Beckworth ranked #1, #3 and #4 on the team in tackles last season and they will also have the responsibility to step up and take over the tradition of outstanding Cru linebackers. Depth behind the three starters is a question entering the fall camp, so look for some fresh faces on the depth chart in reserve roles this year. The secondary is the biggest area of concern for the Cru defense with the loss of three start- ers. FS Rocky Vaclavick is likely to be the only returner playing the same position this season. Vaclavick had 40 tackles and two interceptions last season and coaches will expect him to make a leap as the leader of the defensive backfi eld this season. He will be pushed by converted cornerback Bronson Shaw at that position. Ryan Metcalf makes the move inside to CruBack this season after starting at corner last year and he is battling Chad Morales for the starting job there this year. Kyle Armstrong and Chad Cannon are the early leaders to start at cornerback after playing in reserve roles last season. Nick West and Cody Harvey have a chance to see time after playing for the Cru junior varsity last season and the coaches are high enough on the incoming class of freshman to feel con- fi dent moving Shaw and Metcalf to other positions. The group will look for chemistry during fall camp and will be tested early and often in the pass-happy ASC. The kicking game will improve if placekicker Alan Munoz can return to the form that made him a Preseason All-American last season. Munoz struggled with inju- ries and hit just 6-13 fi eld goal tries. He has a strong leg and was an All- ASC performer as a sophomore. Munoz will also handle kickoff duties after recording 18 touchbacks over the past two seasons. The Cru will have to fi nd a new punter after the departure of Cody Tucker. That posi- tion battle will be one to watch during the fall camp. Bryson Tucker led the team in punt and kickoff returns and Brett Parker was also a danger- ous return man. The Cru will have to fi nd replacements among a group that includes returning players Tariekus Ellis, Quincy Daniels and Geoff Myles. Several newcomers will also compete for the punt and kickoff return jobs this fall. 5 HEAD COACH PETE FREDENBURG

Pete Fredenburg has been more than just a head coach for the UMHB football team, he has also been an architect for the entire Cru program. He was hired on July 1, 1997 and had one year to put a team on the fi eld. It took him just four seasons to fi eld a postseason qualifi er and the Cru won its fi rst American Southwest Conference Championship in the program’s fi fth year. Freden- burg built on that success and under his guidance, the Cru became the fi rst ASC team to play for a national championship with UMHB’s Stagg Bowl appearance in 2004. Fredenburg has literally built the foundation of the UMHB football program, hiring the coaching staff, designing the fi eld- house, ordering the fi rst uniforms and recruiting the student-athletes. On that foundation, he has built a program that has posted a 109-31 all-time record and has been to the postseason eight times in the past nine years. The Cru opened with a pair of sub-.500 seasons in the fi rst two years of the program. But UMHB quickly arrived as a national power with a 9-1 record in 2000. The only loss that year came to a Hardin-Simmons team coming off a national semifi nal appearance. The Cru has only lost more than one regular season game in a season once since that year and Coach Fredenburg has guided the team to a 102-18 record since the beginning the 2000 season. UMHB has gone 88-10 in the regular season this decade and the Cru is 83-15 all-time in American Southwest Conference play. Coach Fredenburg has taken the Cru to one national runner-up fi nish, seven American South- west Conference Championships and eight NCAA Division III National Championship berths. In 12 seasons in Belton, he has coached a Gagliardi Trophy fi nalist, a Rimington Trophy winner, a Tom Gilburg Award winner, eight AFCA All-Americans, 63 All-Region selections, 195 ASC All- Conference players and 91 ASC Academic All-Conference honorees. UMHB has also produced one ASC Offensive Player of the Year, two ASC Special Teams Player of the Year, three ASC Freshmen of the Year, four ASC Offensive Linemen of the Year, fi ve ASC Defensive Linemen of the Year and seven ASC Defensive Players of the Year. UMHB was picked to win the ASC Championship in the league’s annual Preseason Coaches and Media Poll this season and the Cru is a Preseason Top 10 pick in four different publications. The Cru has been ranked in the top 15 in the nation in 67 of the last 71 AFCA Division III Top 25 Coaches Poll and UMHB has been ranked in the top 10 in the country in 55 of those polls. The Cru fi nished the 2004 season ranked #2 in the nation and UMHB was ranked 3rd in the fi nal 2007 and 2008 AFCA Top 25 Polls. Pete Fredenburg was named ASC Coach of the Year for the fourth time following the 2008 season. He was also honored following UMHB’s fi rst conference title in 2002 and added Co-Coach of the Year honors in 2006 and 2008. He was also voted AFCA Region III Coach of the Year in 2000, 2002, 2005 and 2007. Fredenburg is a Central Texas native who grew up in Clifton. From 1980-1993, Fredenburg was an assistant coach under the legendary Grant Teaff at Baylor University. During his time at Baylor, Coach Fredenburg coached in the Cotton Bowl, Liberty Bowl, Copper Bowl, John Hancock Bowl and two Bluebonnet Bowls. In 1990, Coach Fredenburg was named Southwest Con- ference Defensive Coach of the Year and he was also considered one of the top recruiters in the Southwest Conference during his tenure with the Bears. 6 After leaving Baylor, Coach Fredenburg HEAD COACH PETE FREDENBURG spent one season at Louisiana State University before becoming the defensive coordinator at Louisiana Tech University. He spent three sea- sons at Louisiana Tech before coming to UMHB. In his collegiate coaching career, Coach Freden- burg has coached more than 20 players who went on to play professionally. Coach Fredenburg started his coaching career at New Braunfels Canyon High School and he also served as an assistant coach at New Braunfels High School. His fi rst head coaching job came at Giddings High School, where he spent three seasons before leaving to join Baylor University. Fredenburg is a 1970 graduate of South- west Texas State University.
