Pansy Division Pansy Division in 2003. by Linda Rapp Promotional photograph by Richard Turtletaub. Encyclopedia Copyright © 2015, glbtq, Inc. Entry Copyright © 2004, glbtq, inc. Reprinted from http://www.glbtq.com San Francisco-based Pansy Division, now consisting of Christopher Freeman (b. 1961), Jon Ginoli (b. 1959), Patrick Goodwin (b. 1973), and Luis Illades (b. 1974), was the first rock band entirely composed of gay musicians who sang frankly gay-themed tunes. After a productive period of recording and touring they had a fallow spell but have recently re-emerged with a new album and a more mature sound. Guitarist Jon Ginoli and bassist Chris Freeman started the band in 1991. They were accompanied by a drummer, but for the first five years the percussionists came and went with regularity. Ginoli and Freeman felt doubly marginalized: the rock world was not particularly welcoming to gays, and many in the gay community were less than enthusiastic about punk rock music. They rose to the challenge by writing music that was unabashedly gay and punk and that also showed a sense of humor. Pansy Division's first album, Undressed, which featured titles such as "Fem in a Black Leather Jacket" and "Boyfriend Wanted," appeared in 1993. Thereafter, they put out an album a year until 1998. The debut album caught the attention of another Bay Area band, Green Day, who signed them as the opening act for their concerts. The Green Day band members were not gay, but they strongly supported Pansy Division and brought them along on tour for five years. Concert audiences were sometimes hostile to the gay band, however.

If I didn’t use the occasion to tweak the typography a little bit, i wouldn’t be doing my job. Thanks to Jeff Wison for the outstanding New Release Info dancing kids drawing, originally created for the the Pizzafest T-shirts. That cat can draw... As you can recall from MP Days of Yore, Pizzafest was gonna be a big show and pizzafeed with participants getting a free shirt, but the venue got paranoid about security, costs escalated, band avail- abilities got shaky, and the event was cancelled. Fortunately, it was replaced by not one but two “Mutant Fest” type of events: Cincinnati, OH in August (hosted by Dave Spodie of The Connie Dungs) and Columbus, OH in October (hosted by Eddie of The Proms). The bottom line is this: if you wanna have pop-punk events to attend this summer, people need to Do It Yourself. Get out there and independently organize your own Mutant Fest-type of deal! It would seem that there would be enough people and bands in the NY/NJ/PA area and possibly also in the Pacific Northwest—in addition to room for shows in the heartland of the pop-punk world, the midwest. There are rumors of a possible Connie Dungs/Dirt Bike Annie mini-tour this summer, how great would it be to tie into that? • Follow up to December 2, 2019 Executive Committee Action Related to CV Housing First Contact
ITEM 8e Staff Report Subject: Follow Up to December 2, 2019 Executive Committee Action Related to CV Housing First Contact: Tom Cox ([email protected]) and Libby Carlson ([email protected]) Recommendation: Information only. Background: At its December 2019 meeting, the Executive Committee held extensive discussion regarding the CV Housing First program. Items identified for follow up included County monitoring reports, amendment of the grant agreement between CVAG and the County, and more information on reporting and data. The following update is staff’s response to the Executive Committee discussion. Monitoring Reports In November 2019, the City of Indian Wells City Manager filed a Public Records Act request with Riverside County Department of Public Social Services for information regarding monitoring of the DPSS agreement with CVAG for the ‘West Valley Navigation Program’ operated by Path of Life Ministries for FY18/19. After the County provided these records to the City of Indian Wells, the monitoring report was informally circulated among some elected officials prior to the November Homelessness Committee meeting. The report was also referenced during public comment by Indian Wells City Councilmember Ty Peabody with the statement that the report was not properly disclosed and needs to be read by the Homelessness Committee to make a proper evaluation of Path of Life. Note that CVAG also funded the Coachella Valley Rescue Mission in FY18/19 for the west Valley cooling centers project, but monitoring information for this organization was not included in the request from Indian Wells nor referenced in the claim from Councilmember Peabody. In response to discussion held at the Homelessness Committee meeting, the CVAG/Path of Life monitoring report, along with all proposals received in response to the CV Housing First RFP, were included with the program recommendation when it was sent to the Executive Committee in December.

  • Popular Music and Gays, Lesbians, Bisexuals, and Transgender People: an Annotated Bibliography and Discography
Page 1 of 35 Popular Music and Gays, Lesbians, Bisexuals, and Transgender People: An Annotated Bibliography and Discography. Compiled by Walt “Cat” Walker. Approved by the GLBTRT Resources Committee. Last revised January 12, 2017. TABLE OF CONTENTS Introduction 2 I. General Nonfiction 3 II. Memoirs & Biographies 9 III. Fiction 32 IV. Drama 33 V. Children & Teens 34 VI. DVDs 35 Page 2 of 35 Introduction Gays, lesbians, bisexuals, and transgender people have always participated in creating popular music. In recent years, the visibility of LGBTQ people in the music world has increased, and more popular music has been created that openly describes the LGBTQ experience. There has also been an increase in books and films related to LGBTQ visibility in popular music, both in fiction and nonfiction. This bibliography includes resources about gay men, lesbians, bisexuals, and transgender persons involved in the popular music field. The books have all been published in print, and many of them may also be found as e-books. Separate sections contain memoirs, novels, plays, and children’s and teen books. Several LGBT popular music-related DVDs are also listed. Each book and DVD has a link to the OCLC WorldCat record (when available) where you can see which libraries hold the item. Most of this resource is comprised of a discography of popular music recordings by LGBTQ artists. It is not meant to be complete, but many recordings still available in CD format for each artist are listed, and several are annotated. Many of these performers’ songs can now also be found on streaming music services and online digital music websites.

Rejection and Anger in Queer-Feminist Punk Rock Maria Katharina Wiedlack 1 The statement and title for my article,1 "I don’t give a shit where I spit my phlegm", is part of the lyrics to the song "People Hate Me" by the band Tribe 8, which is – as will be explained later on – an excellent example of queer-feminist politics of a punk rock band. This article focuses on queer-feminist punk – also known as queercore, homocore or dykecore – music, its lyrics as well as performances and sound.

  • An Ecological Approach to the Case of Queercore
5.5. Conflicts, integration, hybridization of subcultures: An ecological approach to the case of queercore Vincenzo Romania1, Fabio Bertoni2 and David Primo3 Abstract This paper investigates the case study of queercore, providing a socio-historical analysis of its subcultural production, in the terms of what Michel Foucault has called archaeology of knowledge (1969). In particular, we will focus on: the self-definition of the movement; the conflicts between the two merged worlds of punk and queer culture; the “internal-subcultural” conflicts between both queercore and punk, and between queercore and gay\lesbian music culture; the political aspects of differentiation. In the conclusion, we will offer an innovative theoretical proposal about the interpretation of subcultures in ecological and semiotic terms, combining the contribution of the American sociologist Andrew Abbot and of the Russian semiologist Jurij Michajlovič Lotman. Keywords: queercore, theory, subcultural conflicts. 1. Introduction Since the foundational works of Hall and Jefferson (1975), Irwin (1977) and Hebdige (1979) the theorization about spectacular youth cultures has undergone a deep theoretical revision, regarding their relationship with locality, virtuality and translocality (Bennet and Petterson, 2004); the definition of actors involved in the art worlds (Becker, 1982); the production and reproduction of idiocultures (Fine, 1979; Kotarba, Fackler and Nowotny, 2009). Scarce attention has been paid to the conflicts, negotiations, hybridisations between subcultures. The very large sociological literature about these topics, despite its variety, has some common features. Firstly, it is partially or totally self-referential. While subcultural studies use macro- sociological concept to interpret subcultural phenomena and conceptual problems, very seldom this kind of literature tries to give life to a more general approach to culture, social stratification, and identity theory.

Albums are serious matters to bands and every project comes with a whole set of needs and desires on the part of the band involved. It has come to feel like work. I don’t blame the bands in the least, if I were them I’d be pretty intense about my album, too. Never- theless, this is my hobby and not my job and no matter how selfish it sounds, in the final analysis I make CDs for my own fun. When the process becomes painful, it’s time to do something else—and I’ve reached that point. I’m 95% sure that I’m gonna finish up my album commitments this year and take 2001 off from making full-lengths. (Now available.) THETHE PEABODYSPEABODYS I just can’t begin to tell you how happy this one makes me. SICKO achieved what few bands are capable of doing: they gained a broad and passionate following among music fans on three continents without pandering to the industry or compromising their vision. SICKO developed their own sound, toured when and where they wanted to tour, maintained their personal friendships within the band, and when they felt like they had done their bit, they ended it with a “thank you” show for the fans— on the heels of their biggest selling album! SICKO did it with TOTAL CLASS from It’s not that doing the label sucks.

A GREAT ReadBy Joseph L. DefrancisciHow many people really get to live their dream? Jon and his bandmates sure do, and their dream was not necessarily to get wealthy or famous. This fascinating and amusing tale gives you a look at their real accomplishment, to make a true honest living, being who they want to be, against tremendous pressures of all sorts. It is a great inspiration - to succeed according to your own measure and to have a hell of a great time doing it. I've rediscovered their music and picked up their new stuff, and I must say the music and this book never fail to delight. The guitar is the same. That distinctive, two-step shuffle is the one we're used to. But there's something a little different about this version of AC/DC's Problem Child. The guitarist is a giant, muscle-packed man with a bald head and rainbow-striped knee-socks. He's wearing a sleeveless black shirt, a bright red tie, and a Scottish kilt so short it barely conceals what lies beneath. This, ladies and gentleman, in GayC/DC, Los Angeles's premiere all-gay tribute to AC/DC. And they've taken the songs of perhaps the globe's most heterosexual band, and turned them into something altogether more fabulous. Problem Child is now Bottom Child. "I grew up listening to AC/DC, they’re part of my DNA," says drummer Brian Welch.
