Tessmer: Myth, Ritual, and the Labyrinth of King Minos Myth, Ritual, and the Labyrinth of King Minos Nicole Tessmer St. Louis University According to ancient mythology, King Minos built a perplexing labyrinth to house the Minotaur, a monstrous creature to which his wife had given birth. Each year, the myth states, seven girls and seven boys were chosen to enter the labyrinth as tributes to become food for the Minotaur.1 It was not until Theseus entered the labyrinth, and killed the Minotaur that it could be considered a place to leave your childhood behind. Once inside, they wrestled with their demons, experienced a rebirth, and finally, emerged as adults ready to take their places in society. The myth of the labyrinth can thus be understood as a rite of passage or a coming of age ritual in ancient Greece. -

Greg Anderson http://www.press.umich.edu/titleDetailDesc.do?id=17798 The University of Michigan Press 1 FROM CITY-STATE TO REGION-STATE What exactly do we mean when we say that Attica in the classical period was politically “incorporated” or “uniµed”? If, for the purposes of analysis, we unpack the idea of the polis, we can distinguish three essential levels or sources of political unity in the Attic peninsula. First and most fundamental, the reach of Athenian state institutions ex- tended to the territorial limits of Attica, and this apparatus was recognized as the ultimate locus of political authority for the entire region. Second, all free, native-born, adult males in Attica were eligible to become citizens of Athens, entitling them—even obliging them—to participate in the civil, military, and religious life of the polis. From / on, enrollment took place locally in one of town and village units, or demes, scattered throughout the peninsula and was administered by one’s fellow demesmen. Third, despite the unusually large size of the polis, citizens appear to have been bound to one another by a pow- erful and at times distinctly chauvinistic form of collective consciousness or identity. Each citizen was encouraged to imagine himself a member of a sin- gle, extended, undifferentiated community of “Athenians,” sharing with his fellows a common history, culture, and destiny that set them apart from all other such communities. For most modern authorities, these distinctions will seem artiµcial and per- haps anachronistic, since it is widely felt that, unlike the nation-states of our own times, the Greek polis in general and the Athenian instance in particular 13 The Athenian Experiment: Building an Imagined Political Community in Ancient Attica, 508-490 B.C. -
Modern Minoica As Religious Focus in Contemporary Paganism
The artifice of Daidalos: Modern Minoica as religious focus in contemporary Paganism More than a century after its discovery by Sir Arthur Evans, Minoan Crete continues to be envisioned in the popular mind according to the outdated scholarship of the early twentieth century: as a peace-loving, matriarchal, Goddess-worshipping utopia. This is primarily a consequence of more up-to-date archaeological scholarship, which challenges this model of Minoan religion, not being easily accessible to a non-scholarly audience. This paper examines the use of Minoan religion by two modern Pagan groups: the Goddess Movement and the Minoan Brotherhood, both established in the late twentieth century and still active. As a consequence of their reliance upon early twentieth-century scholarship, each group interprets Minoan religion in an idealistic and romantic manner which, while suiting their religious purposes, is historically inaccurate. Beginning with some background to the Goddess Movement, its idiosyncratic version of history, and the position of Minoan Crete within that timeline, the present study will examine the interpretation of Minoan religion by two early twentieth century scholars, Jane Ellen Harrison and the aforementioned Sir Arthur Evans—both of whom directly influenced popular ideas on the Minoans. Next, a brief look at the use of Minoan religious iconography within Dianic Feminist Witchcraft, founded by Zsuzsanna Budapest, will be followed by closer focus on one of the main advocates of modern Goddess worship, thealogian Carol P. Christ, and on the founder of the Minoan Brotherhood, Eddie Buczynski. The use of Minoan religion by the Goddess Movement and the Minoan Brotherhood will be critiqued in the light of Minoan archaeology, leading to the conclusion that although it provides an empowering model upon which to base their own beliefs and practices, the versions of Minoan religion espoused by the Goddess Movement and the Minoan Brotherhood are historically inaccurate and more modern than ancient. -

With their fearsome tank (Panzer) formations operating as an apparently irresistible spearhead, and with a powerful air force (Luftwaffe) circling overhead, the Wehrmacht ran through or around every defensive position thrown in its path. BRAURON the Sacred Sanctuary of Artemis Brian Clark
BRAURON The Sacred Sanctuary of Artemis Brian Clark ‘Once one has seen her, one can never forget the glory and the serenity of the admirable face of the goddess on the Brauron reliefs who so wonderfully suits her landscape.’1 The sanctuary of Artemis at Brauron is situated near a small bay in eastern Attica, about 38 kilometres from Athens. In ancient times the sanctuary was on the coast. However, today the acropolis is about ½ kilometre from the Bay of Vraona. The Brauron sanctuary lies in the Erasinos valley close to the mouth of the river, behind Mounts Pentelicus and Hymettus. Artemis was a goddess of the margins and the outdoors, associated with hunting and wildlife. One of her functions was presiding over the young and vulnerable, both animal and human, especially during transitional stages in the life cycle. As a goddess of childbirth she watched over pregnant women during the perilous, peri-natal transition. Concerned with fertility she also protected the young in the transition into puberty. Reflecting this transitional aspect, her sanctuaries were often located in marginal regions or at junctions where boundaries were unclear. ALKMAN AND THE ATHENIAN ARKTEIA (PLATES 83-86) N 1963 AND 1965 Lilly Kahil published fragmentsof a number of small 6th- and 5th- centuryblack-figured vases, which she called krateriskoi.1These krateriskoi,which were found in Brauron, Piraeus, and the Athenian Agora, immediatelycalled attentionto them- selves by their distinctive shape, fabric, and iconography.2Kahil subsequently published three much larger red-figuredkraters with similar shape and similar iconographybut of unknown provenance and republished some krateriskos fragments from the Athenian Akropolis.3More recently, Lydia Palaiokrassain her publicationof the finds from a sanc- tuary of Artemis at Mounichia has more than doubledthe numberof publishedkrateriskoi. The connectionof almost all the findspotswith Artemis and the repeated depiction on the vases of young girls dancing, racing (sometimesnaked), or processingnear an altar and a palm tree has led scholarsto agree that the vases are cult objectsand that the representations depict the ritual of the arkteia, at which Athenian girls at a certain age "were bears" I Kahil, 1963 and 1965.
