For this edition several chapters have been completely re-written to relect major developments in Canadian literature since 2004. Surveys of ic- tion, drama, and poetry are complemented by chapters on Aboriginal writ- ing, autobiography, literary criticism, writing by women, and the emergence of urban writing. Areas of research that have expanded since the irst edition include environmental concerns and questions of sexuality which are freshly explored across several different chapters. A substantial chapter on franco- phone writing is included. Authors such as Margaret Atwood, noted for her experiments in multiple literary genres, are given full consideration, as is the work of authors who have achieved major recognition, such as Alice Munro, recipient of the Nobel Prize for literature. Eva-Marie Kröller edited the Cambridge Companion to Canadian Literature (irst edn., 2004) and, with Coral Ann Howells, the Cambridge History of Canadian Literature (2009). Navigating the Atlantic World: Piracy, Illicit Trade, and the Construction of Commercial Networks, 1650-1791 Dissertation Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University by Jamie LeAnne Goodall, M.A. Graduate Program in History The Ohio State University 2016 Dissertation Committee: Margaret Newell, Advisor John Brooke David Staley Copyright by Jamie LeAnne Goodall 2016 Abstract This dissertation seeks to move pirates and their economic relationships from the social and legal margins of the Atlantic world to the center of it and integrate them into the broader history of early modern colonization and commerce. In doing so, I examine piracy and illicit activities such as smuggling and shipwrecking through a new lens. They act as a form of economic engagement that could not only be used by empires and colonies as tools of competitive international trade, but also as activities that served to fuel the developing Caribbean-Atlantic economy, in many ways allowing the plantation economy of several Caribbean-Atlantic islands to flourish. Ultimately, in places like Jamaica and Barbados, the success of the plantation economy would eventually displace the opportunistic market of piracy and related activities. Plantations rarely eradicated these economies of opportunity, though, as these islands still served as important commercial hubs: ports loaded, unloaded, and repaired ships, taverns attracted a variety of visitors, and shipwrecking became a regulated form of employment. In places like Tortuga and the Bahamas where agricultural production was not as successful, illicit activities managed to maintain a foothold much longer. -

It was his mother’s pub when she was alive but now it is his pub. Unfortunately, Jim doesn’t Jlike working in a pub. He likes the sea and dreams of going on a sailing adventure. One day Billy Bones, a pirate, comes into the pub. He dies with a treasure map in his hand. Jim looks at the map. It is a secret treasure map of Treasure Island. It says that on the island there are three clues that will help him find the treasure. Jim decides to go to Treasure Island. He wants the treasure. Of course, Jim needs a ship. He meets Captain Long John Silver and his parrot, Captain Flint. Jim tells Long John Silver about Treasure Island. Long John Silver offers to take Jim on his ship, ‘The Hispaniola’. Jim agrees and they set off on the voyage. Unfortunately for Jim, Long John Silver is a pirate! When they arrive at Treasure Island, Long John Silver tries to steal the map from Jim. But Jim escapes with his map and goes to find the three clues. The three clues that will take him to the treasure. When Jim starts looking for the treasure, he meets an old man called Ben. Ben has been on the island for a long time and helps Jim find the three clues. Clue 1: Change letters on the finger tree. -
John Buchan (1875-1940)
JOHN BUCHAN (1875-1940) John Buchan was born on 26 August 1875 in Perth, Scotland. The eldest son of a Free Church of Scotland minister (also named John) and his wife, Helen Jane Masterton, Buchan gained considerable fame as a creative writer and historian. He also devoted major portions of his career to the law, publishing, and government. For 12 years beginning in 1876, Buchan lived at Pathhead, on the east coast of Scotland, where his father served as minister at the West Church. In 1888, the family moved to Glasgow, where Buchan’s father began leading the congregation of the John Knox Free Church in the Gorbals – a working-class neighbourhood south of the Clyde. John Buchan. Buchan studied at Hutchesons’ Grammar School until 1892, at which time he won a John Clark £30 bursary to enter Glasgow University. “I suppose I was a natural story-teller” (Memory, 193), Buchan reflected towards the end of his life. His first concerted literary efforts began during his years at Glasgow. Balancing academic pursuits with personal writing projects, Buchan made time to 1 contribute numerous articles and stories to periodicals, including Blackwood’s, Macmillan’s, and the Gentleman’s Magazine (which printed his first article, “Angling in Still Waters,” in August 1893). During this period, Buchan also edited Francis Bacon’s Essays and Apothegms (1894) and wrote his first novel, Sir Quixote of the Moors (1895). Buchan dedicated the latter to Gilbert Murray, a Glasgow professor who had a profound influence on his knowledge of Classical literature and philosophy. -

A careful reading of his shorter fiction reveals an alternative commentary on Empire that has been ignored. The works discussed problematize the common assumption that Buchan’s views on Empire in his fiction are Victorian, by showing that he replaced the nineteenth-century model of Imperial rule by military force with the importance of the administrator and the knowledgeable man on the ground.
