    Small carnivores of the Mt Rungwe–Kitulo landscape, southwest Tanzania: presence, distributions and threats Daniela W. DE LUCA1 and Noah E. MPUNGA2 Abstract An ongoing multi-disciplinary research and conservation initiative examined the small carnivore community of the Mt Rung- we–Kitulo landscape in southwest Tanzania over an eight-year period. This key landscape’s two contiguous protected areas (Mt Rungwe Nature Reserve and Kitulo National Park) had not, at the study’s start, been formally managed for decades. We used sign survey, camera-trapping and interviews to assess small carnivore species richness and conservation status, and the causes of threat to each species, such as habitat degradation and hunting. Across the Mt Rungwe–Kitulo landscape 11 species of small car- nivores were sighted, camera-trapped and/or recorded by hunted remains and/or signs (faeces and/or footprints). Species found in Mt Rungwe were detected also in Kitulo except for Egyptian Mongoose Herpestes ichneumon, which nevertheless is likely to in- habit the latter. Faeces records from 2003 to 2010 indicated broad distributions for genet(s) Genetta (at least some, Rusty-spotted Genet G. maculata), Zorilla Ictonyx striatus and African Striped Weasel Poecilogale albinucha, Genetta being the most commonly recorded ‘species’ in the landscape. Excepting Servaline Genet G. servalina, all species expected in the landscape were found. The recorded carnivore composition showed a prevalence of generalist species, probably resulting from the degraded habitat (and are therefore at risk from isolation. Interviews demonstrated the importance of human perception and cultural values in respons- consequent invasion of the forest edge as it fragments) and a long history of hunting within the forest.

    The 2008 IUCN red listings of the world’s small carnivores Jan SCHIPPER¹*, Michael HOFFMANN¹, J. W. DUCKWORTH² and James CONROY³ Abstract The global conservation status of all the world’s mammals was assessed for the 2008 IUCN Red List. Of the 165 species of small carni- vores recognised during the process, two are Extinct (EX), one is Critically Endangered (CR), ten are Endangered (EN), 22 Vulnerable (VU), ten Near Threatened (NT), 15 Data Deficient (DD) and 105 Least Concern. Thus, 22% of the species for which a category was assigned other than DD were assessed as threatened (i.e. CR, EN or VU), as against 25% for mammals as a whole. Among otters, seven (58%) of the 12 species for which a category was assigned were identified as threatened. This reflects their attachment to rivers and other waterbodies, and heavy trade-driven hunting. The IUCN Red List species accounts are living documents to be updated annually, and further information to refine listings is welcome. Despite longer than usual grass at Marrick which made spotlighting more difficult we still managed to find most of the species found on the two tours in 2016 plus a couple of real bonuses. The highlights among the 55 species of mammal seen included: A fantastic encounter with a pack of at least eight African Wild Dogs with seven three-month old puppies, plus another group of three females later the same day. A superb female Leopard on our first afternoon in Madikwe, with an awesome encounter with the same individual in the grounds of our lodge, including one of the clients finding her sitting on his balcony on our last evening! Our best views of Aardwolf to date in Marrick and prolonged views of Aardvark at the same location. Three Brown Hyaenas including one for over 30 minutes one afternoon. Two Black-footed Cats and no fewer than nine (recently-split) African Wildcats including a female with three kittens. 1 Two male Cheetahs and eight or nine Lions. Two Spotted-necked Otters feeding on a fish for over an hour at Warrenton. A superb Black Rhino and over 20 White Rhinos including a boisterous group of nine animals.

Svensson, and Peter John Taylor Abstract Scientific investigations on the mammals of Angola started over 150 years ago, but information remains scarce and scattered, with only one recent published account. Here we provide a synthesis of the mammals of Angola based on a thorough survey of primary and grey literature, as well as recent unpublished records. We present a short history of mammal research, and provide brief information on each species known to occur in the country. Particular attention is given to endemic and near endemic species. We also provide a zoogeographic outline and information on the conservation of Angolan mammals. We found confirmed records for 291 native species, most of which from the orders Rodentia (85), Chiroptera (73), Carnivora (39), and Cetartiodactyla (33). There is a large number of endemic and near endemic species, most of which are rodents or bats. The large diversity of species is favoured by the wide P. Perez,B.Li,A.Tillier,A.Cruaud and G. Veron Abstract The relationships within the mongooses (Herpestidae) have been recently reconsidered on the basis of molecular data. However, these studies failed to completely resolve the relationships within the subfamily Herpestinae. Moreover, the species of the genus Bdeogale have not been included in previous studies. Three genes were sequenced, Cytochrome b, ND2 and Transthyretin intron I, for 20 species of Herpestidae. The results show that the Herpestidae form two clades, corresponding to the traditional Herpestinae and Mungotinae, but with Cynictis included in the former rather than the latter. Within the Herpestinae, the genus Herpestes is not monophyletic. A newly proposed clade groups Bdeogale, Cynictis, Ichneumia and Rynchogale. Some morphological and karyological characters were mapped on the trees so as to characterize the newly defined molecular groups.
