LIFE MEMBERS (Women) Mesdames R Martin, T McDonald, P Quickenden, P Carrick PRESIDENTS REPORT

It is my pleasure to present the 119th Annual Report to the members of the Sydenham Cricket Club.

From a competitive playing perspective this was a much improved season. Our premier Mens team took out the T20 Trophy- finished mid table in the 50 over Comp and finished 2nd in the 2 day format.

We know we will lose a couple of players from our Prem team at least with Phil Robinson moving to Queensland and Arnie Yugaraja moving north. However on the upside at the time of this going to Press, Chris Harris has been appointed Captain/ Coach for the Prem team and we have signed George Harding a very talented young amateur from the UK for the season. He is a very handy left arm spinner and more than useful bat, and we are looking forward to him making a big impact this season. Glen Hooper has made himself available again this season as Prem Manager and I cannot understate the huge value Glen provides in this demanding role.

Our 2A and 2B sides had mixed success-Geordie Dann continued with his side in the 2B comp and performed creditably. Our 2A side performed strongly at times but was hampered by lack of players at times, and even defaulted a game. This is a concern and is being addressed in the off season.

Our afternoon grades enjoyed mixed success, but I know they enjoyed their cricket.

You guys are so much a part of the backbone of our club, always supporting our social functions and turning up to after match festivities, and the committee are very motivated to ensure this continues to be the case.

I really hope we can continue maintain our number of afternoon teams going forward, as this is the strength of our club.Your committee also acknowledges the work you do around our Social activities also, and whilst the evenings are great fun , the income is also very much appreciated.

This season coming we are also taking over from our Junior committee, the administration of our three top womens sides; the premier Womens and Div one and two teams. This is part of our concentrated efforts to rebuild our Premier Womens team and supporting sides. At the time of writing this your committee is working hard to secure a couple of Scottish International players to bolster our playing ranks and we are confident we can secure more Senior players as we strengthen our Premier team. We will also concentrate coaching efforts on our Div one and Two players as they will be the future strength of our Womens teams.

This season we are hopeful of providing much improved playing surfaces on our 3 blocks and practice . It is a huge frustration to take back the park after it has been churned up with a wet season of rugby, and with no indication from Council on when the park will be levelled and re-turfed , our challenges remain. However on a positive note we have secured the services of a very experienced groundsman Tom O Carroll, and with our equipment in good condition and a kind spring I am hopeful that we can present much improved pitches this season. You will see from our annual accounts that financially we continue to hold our head above water— well sort of!!\ Our financial support from the various gaming trusts continues to be difficult. We know that every one of these funders is under pressure from all areas of community activities (including our schools) and the available funds are therefore being spread to an increasingly wider group of organisations within the community. This trend is of great concern to your committee, as income from our subs is such a small part of our total requirement and requesting a sub from you of $400 or more would cause massive player departures from our club.

Currently all areas of expense are under review, and clearly your committee must engage the businesses in our community to seek Corporate sponsorship. In addition it is a priority to investigate any other areas of revenue raising which can provide much needed revenue to keep our club viable.

In saying all of this I do want to give heartfelt thanks to the funders who do support us Air Rescue Services Ltd The Lion Foundation NZ Community Trust Pub Charity The Southern Trust. Cricket Express. Global Homes.

Without the support of the above trusts, and Organisations we simply would not have a cricket Club.

Finally I do want to say a huge thank you to our committee who all work tirelessly to ensure continue to be the Club of Choice.

I am pleased to report that all have expressed their intention to continue in their roles within the committee this year, as have I, as we have much to do to ensure we continue to grow and prosper as a club.

Graham Harris President MEN’SCLUB CAPTAINS REPORT

The season has ended on a high with the club picking up three Metro major trophies for the season. Earlier this season the Premier Men won the 20/20 competition. The 3C Cardinals finished of the season winning the final of their grade (defending only 72!!) and the Presidents Cardinals held onto the Doug Frampton trophy played for by the teams in this grade on a week by week basis.

One of the biggest achievements by the club this season was the addition of a Premier Women’steam to the club. Led by Emma Scarf and coached by Ivan Thomson and Kevin McGowan, this side struggled for the season result wise but made up for it with the commitment of the girls to get out there and give it 100 percent. This team has much potential which will see them continue to develop into next season.

Again this season I had the opportunity to play in many of the sides and it was pleasing to see everyone getting out there and giving it a go and enjoying cricket. We have again this season have seen many youth players start to come thru the South West Youth grades and into the club teams. I must thank all the captains for their support over the season and thank them for their patience and hard work when trying to get there teams on the field.

This year’sprize giving saw one of our biggest turnouts with over 100 members, WAGs, family and friends there on the final night of the season in the Bowling Club. And a big welcome to the Premier Women and Div 1/2 girls who also came along on the night. There was certainly a big list of trophies presented on the night. Thanks to Hoops for being MC on the night, Bert for the raffles and to everyone who helped to make it a great night.

This was followed up by an absorbing beer pong competition where many showed there skill (or lack of) in getting ping pong balls into cups of beer. Thanks to Geordie Dann for his organisation of this event.

We must also thank the bowling club for their support and use of the clubrooms and bowling greens over the season. It certainly is a pleasant place to come back at the end of the playing day whether for a quiet drink or a round of bowls. Hopefully members will support the clubrooms more regularly next season. At times it was disappointing to see so few back at the end of day. We probably have one of the best clubrooms around in Christchurch so let’suse them.

Remember to stay up to date with the club scene on Facebook and on the club website.

Andrew Chisnall Club Captain OBITUARIES

In January this year Sydenham lost one of its best when Paul Shanks tragically passed away at just 56 years of age.

Paul joined the club around 1976 and he played a lot of his early cricket in Third grade. I got to know Paul well in the 1980’sand we became good friends thereafter. He and I were instrumental in getting a one day team off the ground in the mid to late 80’sin a grade which later “morphed”into the Cavaliers grade .The strength of this side grew and we became one of the best teams in the grade culminating in winning the competition in the 1997-98 season under the astute leadership of Paul Shanks.

Paul was a talented wicketkeeper and handy middle order batsman playing many valuable innings to either dig us out of trouble or to take us to victory. He was a shrewd captain and also a keen student of the game and he liked nothing more than to discuss the game in detail , particularly over a beer ( a flagon in the early days ) at the conclusion of the days play. It was at these times in particular when Paul’sdry wit would be to the fore, as he readily pointed out (tongue in cheek) individuals shortcomings out on the field earlier in the day. I seemed to cop a fair bit of this and I can recall on one occasion after I had scored a lamentable duck, Paul came over and sat down beside me, and with his cheeky grin said “ Billy Nic , talk us through your innings”.

Paul later played in Presidents and after giving away the gloves due to his gammy knees he turned his hand to slow /medium swing bowling with some success. Typical Paul, he was always in the game making a significant contribution in some way.

The Shanks family were very active in the club with Paul coaching youth teams while he and Wife Gill also coached kids teams. Remarkably, Paul, Gill, sisters Deb and Bronwyn, brothers Erin and Glen and sons Simon and Michael, all played for Sydenham and some stage. Quite an achievement for one family. It may not be widely known that English all- rounder Ben Stokes is Paul’snephew, being Sister Deb’sson.

Pauls playing association with the club concluded in 2002 when he and his family moved to Melbourne due a job promotion, however we kept in close contact and we would catch up whenever Paul was in Christchurch on business or on holiday. He retained a keen interest in the fortunes of both Presidents and the club as a whole.

Sadly, Paul has been taken from us much too soon however he has left us many great memories of a talented cricketer and excellent leader but most of all of a great person.

Performance wise the season post-Christmas has been a good – a first place in the T20 weekend, a final placing of 6th in the one-day competition and a second placing in the two- day competition.

Individually we still struggled at times to put a competitive total on the board for our bowling attack to bowl to. When this was done, our bowlers were able to put the opposition under pressure and in two of the two day games we had teams struggling to make the follow on. Great efforts from Braden Gardner with two 5-wicket bags, Chris Cooper and Mitch Gardner also claimed a 5 wicket bag each.

Batting wise there were a number of good scores, only one hundred –Simon Keen, Arnie Yugaraja with a ninety, a handful of fifties and the rest were a collection of forties/thirties/twenties that when put together created a competitive total.

Chris Harris has brought a number of great qualities to the premier side this season, although by his own standards the performance with the bat in the second half of the season was not where he probably wanted, his stingy economical bowling was able to compliment the fire and brimstone of the three prong pace attack very ably. But it is the other aspects to his involvement that create the greatest impact –players confidence from having him in the team, the knowledge and experience of cricketing scenarios revisited, leadership on the field, and of note, great banter off the field.

We played aggressive cricket and tried to take advantage of the bonus points when on offer, we had teams under pressure and on a couple of occasions we were our own worst enemy in the field with breaks in concentration that at times cost us.

It is with sadness that we will have seen the last of Phil Robinson in the Sydenham colours, he has been a solid performer in the premier side, on and off the field. Unfortunately Phil has had to place family first and relocate to Australia. His stories, his leadership and tireless efforts to play a game that he dearly loves will leave a hole that may not be readily filled. We wish him all the best for his next adventures and hope that he stays close to the game he loves.

It is also sad that Arnie ‘Russ’Yugaraja is leaving us to head north with career opportunities and again hopefully new cricket environments to conquer. Russ has been a leading contributor with the bat and at times with the ball, but with a new career and future focus, cricket has had to take a slightly lesser effort. As Brent Findlay mentioned to Russ in the game against LPW he hoped that Russ did not spend all that training during the week to look that bad –little did he know that Russ was unfortunately not able to be at training at all. I was slightly confused as Russ did score 92 and 62 in that game – I personally would be glad to get the runs, ugly or not!

So some very pleasing results –now there are higher goals to set and winter training programmes to create. As a club on the move, there is still some movement to be made in the three competitions, defend the T20 title, make the semis in the One Day Comp and Win the Two Day Comp. that’sall…

Sydenham’sreturn to the Premier women’scompetition was predictably tough. It would be fair to say that they didn’treally come close to winning any matches, and were on the receiving end of Some heavy defeats. Yet, apart from the last game when winter sports began to have an effect on playing numbers, they all came back each Saturday, and came to training when they could.

One thing that never ceased to amaze me was the way the Sydenham girls remained committed and positive. Not once did I hear any murmurs of despondency, nor witness any instance of poor sportsmanship either towards one another or the opposition. This is a credit to them and their parents. It also reflects the hard work put in over past years by Kevin McGowan, Andrew McKenzie and Emma Scarf.

It was very pleasing to see the recognition the women’ssection received at this year’send of season prize giving. I observed a genuine respect from the predominantly male audience, and I would like to thank AC and the Committee for providing the girls with the opportunity to be part of this important event.

Looking ahead, planning has already started for next season. An overseas player is being sourced, and the Club has secured the services of an ex-white fern as player coach in the second half of the season. Hoops has offered to include the girls in pre-season training and I am sure many of them will take this up. So, despite a season where the newly promoted Premier side failed to report a win, there is much to be optimistic about as we look to next season.

2B GRADE TEAM REPORT –SUDDENLY SYDENHAM

This season was a season of growth and transition. We started the season considering a name change from “Suddenly Sydenham”to “More of a Bowler Really”,based on the lack of true batsmen in the team and long list of bowling all-rounders. By the end of the season we were struggling for bowlers but somehow we still had no batsmen. We’dlost our two opening bowlers Nick Magon to Switzerland and John Carter to a back injury. Geordie Dann blew his shoulder out in a freak Frisbee accident, Jim Simpson broke his finger and Benny Magon dislocated his finger due to Michael Nicolson firing in one over the stumps from short cover to get a run out on the last ball of the innings after the batsmen was safely at his crease.

We had 7 wins and 10 losses, but there were a lot of close games and we did well with many of our bowlers out. The bowlers we had were more than effective, Tom “Iwant cucumber sandwiches”Broughton was a top notch import from the motherland. He bowled for Queen and country and ended up with excellent figures to show for it 38 at 14.24. But as has often demonstrated, anything Britain can do we can do better. Dan Loughton had a Hillary-esque year with 2 hatricks, four five wicket bags, a ten wicket bag and final statistics of 69 wickets at 11.88.

In the 2B grade a winning total is approximately half that of a winning total in international cricket, as such an innings of 25 runs is as good as a 50, and a 50 is as good as a century. When this is considered Michael Nicolson was Sudden Sydenham’sStephen Fleming. For not only does Michael love the new Fujitsu Air Conditioner and come from the best school south of the Waka-chang-chang, Michael’sconversion rate was as equally dismal as the Flem-meister with 7 innings over 25 and no 50s. Despite the previously mentioned Frisbee disaster of 2013, Geordie had an excellent year with the bat averaging 26.7 and hitting 13 Fujitsu Air Conditioner’s Maximums (sixes). Speaking of Fujitsu Air Conditioner Maximums, Jack Auty hit his first 6 during his first 50 for Sydenham cricket (only took 8 seasons). It was a beautiful cover drive along the ground, the batsmen ran two and then the fielder fired it at the stumps and it went for four over throws. We can only imagine that Danny Morrison would have said something like “No point looking for that one, take a bow Jack Auty”.

Jim Simpson started the season by getting hit for a few Fujitsu Air Conditioner maximums but finished the season well. His off spinners famously won an unwinnable match against STA with 5 wickets for 25 runs. Martin Crook had an okay year with the bat but no one will forget his catch at gully. Martin is not a small man but he looked as nimble as a Fujitsu Air Conditioner flying through the air and snaffling one handed a bullet that flew off the edge. Zach Abbott and Benny Magon had some great innings included quite a few game winners including a 50(39) and 74(76) top scores respectively.

We also had a number of fill-ins do quite well so thank you to Ben Potter, Bruce Coxon, Josh Heenan, Josh Gardener, Sam Wilkinson, Shannon Smith, Andrew Moulton and good ol’Matt Coxon. I haven’tmentioned Andrew Reynolds but perhaps he would prefer it that way, needless you won’tsee him on any Fujitsu Air Conditioner adverts in the future. But Andy you’ve performed great in the past, you always bring the beers and banter so you’re already on the 2014/15 team list and we know you’ll be an asset to the team.

What a great year guys, we all enjoyed it heaps as. We’ve got a great team culture going on and let’skeep that going for the 2014/15 season.

3A GRADE TEAM REPORT

We finished 5th (out of 10) at the end of the 2nd round. After that our numbers and performances dropped off. We did have the distinction of being only one of two teams to beat ES the eventual winners.

Kash and Aiden lead our bowling with back-up from Lucky, Salim.Mayank and Dallas. Our spinners were Aftab and Pav.Mayank had the amazing economy rate of 3.5 runs per over for the entire season.

Our batting was lead by Mayank, Shane, Aftab, Salim, Jordyn and Pav.Mayank being our top run-getter. Salim (who is 6’4”)is as talented a batsman as anyone in NZ but likes his basketball more but we are always hopeful.

We had some other very good cricketers play just 3 or 4 games for us-JJ who was a Canterbury under 15 fast bowler, Zack who is a useful batsman, Pankaj who is tall and thin and is an outstanding offy (we may have missed the boat on this guy as he could be an even better leggie), and Hamish a lovely kid who ended up in the St Bedes 1st x1. Not to mention the old fella (AC).

Three of our guys played games for the 2A (Kash,Aftab and Mayank) and all performed well.I’mtaking a break next year but hope our keen guys will play 2A’s. Dick Jones Captain 3A GRADE AVERAGES

3B TEAM REPORT –ALLSTARS

At the start of the season we had a key player leave and some people who had said they were keen fail to commit. The viability of the team was in real doubt. We talked about it as a team and decided to see how the next few weeks would go for numbers and make a call on the future of the team. As it happened - through some fresh blood and some fill ins who were serious about their cricket and actually added to the team - our numbers were more consistent this year as they have ever been since the team graduated from high school to men's cricket more than a decade ago. We had a stretch of nine or ten games where we had eleven every time and this helped with a string of nearly as many games without a loss, (one no result among the wins). We spent a good part of the year in the top four. Unheard of for the Allstars.

The story of the team this year was the genuine spread of contributions among the players. There were the usual heavy lifters of course: John and Cam doing more than most. But everyone in the team had a star turn or two, with plenty of chipping in here and there with double figures innings or a flukey wicket. We had a few come from behind wins (notably against the goats on Sydenham 2), where we carried on like we were at Lord's or the SCG. Team spirit was strong. This spirit was probably most visible in the team player of the year Nigel. He came in as a new player when the team was at a low ebb and brought a lot of talk and some unabashed passion. He really lifted the team. And he had a couple of decent innings to boot.

As the team gets older, and there're greater family and career commitments - and as we get increasingly out of shape - it gets harder to see the team still going in the long run. But after a really positive 2013/2014 it'd be great to see us go another one or two at least.

Joe Potter Butler Captain 3B TEAM REPORT –GOATS

Played 21 won 5 lost 16

The past year was a struggle for the Goats. The loss of a number of core players from previous seasons due to injury, work or family commitments led us to having a squad of 9 regular players for the most part of the season and 3 of them were new to the team. The other spots we tried to fill with part timers or players who might have been free from other grades but we often only had 10 players taking the field which always made things challenging. While we only won 5 games we also had 3 losses by one wicket and 2 by less than 10 runs which was frustrating.

Our batting was what let us down. We lacked the one player scoring consistent runs each week that we had last year and while most players had that good innings at some stage of the season we didn't achieve it often enough to make the difference in the win column. 8 regular players averaged 15 or better but only 1 averaged over 20 and only 6 scores over 50 for the season.

Our bowling kept us in most games with Gurpreet and the two Alex's bowling the bulk of the overs. The bowling of Alex Brailey spearheaded the attack and the more he bowled the better he got through the season. Gurpreet was new to the club this year and his big in swingers were a constant threat and he did well to pick up the most wickets for the team. Some of the RPO's were not helped by a lack of fielding support, both with regards to catching and often being short of numbers.

Through a tough season we still maintained a good team spirit and always played hard until the end. The addition of a couple of new full time players for next season could make all the difference to a very young squad. Congratulation to Alex Brailey for getting our player of the year. Great bowling, some good knocks down the order and always enthusiastic in the field. Special thanks to all the players who helped us out through the season and all the time spent by people trying to find those players.

This was a year of redemption and fun. Finishing 7th in 2012/13 had been a considerable under-performance with the talent available in the squad that year, but this year's outright 2nd placing felt about right. It was a season of three "halves", Oct was unbeaten and saw five wins, and then we lost four out of five games in the Nov/Dec period to kill off our title aspirations before finishing off by being unbeaten after Christmas.

We saw some phenomenal batting and bowling performances during the season and as is typical for our team – we enjoyed some personal success, celebrated properly when we won, acknowledged the efforts of the opposing teams and took our losses like good southern men. It’sno fluke that we are liked and respected in the grade - and long may that continue.

The main feature of the season was the better balance that came into the team. We have long been the best bowling side (although certainly not the best fielding one), but our batting was inconsistent to say the least. A number of things changed this year, most notably the full season that we got out of Brendon Laughton and Anthony Wild - who had joined us late the previous season. Once they settled in as our preferred openers just before Christmas, the batting was rarely troubled to make a competitive score - and with the bowling attack we had, it only had to be marginally so. Between them Laughts and Wildy put on three 150+ opening partnerships with a club record 305 at Burwood Park being the highlight. The surprise was Wildy. We had all figured out from his few innings in 2012/13 that Laughts could bat, but Wildly was more seen as a bowler from a past life. That all changed to our surprise, and I suspect his, during this season. In partnership with Laughts, Wildy’s(grade leading) 579 runs, including one mammoth innings of 193, proved him to be the most devastating batsmen in the grade and the combination of the two became increasingly daunting for opposition sides as the season worn on.

But it wasn't only about these two, the other big contributor was Matty Loose, who after taking a season to find his feet in the grade, started to really produce the goods with the bat - even then his perchance for getting out for quick fire 30's & 40's when well set precluded him from getting the really big scores to take him to 500 plus on the year, something I'll sure Matty will be conscious of and resolve next season. Geoff Miller was again a consistent contributor in the middle order where his experience really counted on a number of occasions, the final match against Syds Hospital further testimony of that. Likewise Ralphy was consistent with an average of near 40 as an allrounder who always delivered when his team was up against it. There were solid batting performances from the likes of Kev Moore and Spency, who both just didn’tplay enough games this year, David " Yogi" Williams and Dave Fleming, but after Christmas especially, opportunities with the bat became limited for the middle order when Laughts and Wildy really hit their straps.

There were many memorable batting performance over the season but two will not be forgotten; the win against the Buccaneers at Bradford Park when Ralphy and Ferg batted us out of a hole to chase down the remaining 90 runs with only two wickets left, and the Easts Blue game at Burwood with its 305 opening partnership the likes of which may not be seen again for some time.

Whilst Laughts and Wildy dominated the batting stats it was no way as clear cut in the bowling. Matt and Flem shared the most wickets at 22 a piece, both bowling a number of trying spells and picking up wickets regularly to keep the opposition struggling for momentum. Generally no one completely dominated, everyone just contributed often. What was scary was Sam's 16 wickets from less than half of the overs of the top two, and when you combine that with some excellent batting performances, perhaps it’san early sign of how the end of season awards might become when Sam joins the team full time. Sam’shat- trick against Hornby was one of the bowling highlights as was Jules four wickets from four (that sadly wasn’tgiven) at Syd 3.

Ken Julian was another huge contributor with an average RPO of 2.7 making him a silent match winner in a number of games - Ken’songoing availability remains critical to the team especially in the big matches. Jase had a disrupted year with the birth of Molly, his and Jo’sfirst child, and after the early part of the season where his stats almost exactly mirrored that of Ken’s, Jase’savailability saw him play very few games after Christmas. Jeremy ‘Second Spell’Brown bowled some of the best and worst balls of the season. Upon figuring out he was all but unplayable in his second spell, he was often used early to unsettle the openers before coming back later to rip out the middle or lower order. But frankly even when we had people unavailable we were still blessed with plenty of talent at the bowling crease with Jules putting in another strong year with 17 wickets, Kev, Yogi and Ferg contributing in a number of useful, economical, wicket taking spells. With Bert Walker and Kev Congdon also likely to shoulder some bowling burden next year, we are well placed with a balanced bowling strike force.

Similar to the batting, the fielding took another big step up as well over the season. Some of it was for the same reason, a full year from Laughts and Wildy who were both excellent in the field. Laughts won our fielding award which was no surprise as the ball just tended to hunt him out in the field and fortunately, whilst he missed a one or two as well, he is one of the better catchers in the grade and certainly the best motivator. But there were many others as well who stood out with some of the younger guys in Jeremy Brown, Ferg, Matt all delivering such that, combined with the older guys, the fielding was as good as or better than most others. The wicket keeping was also of a high standard with Geoff, Yogi, Bert, Laughts and Spency all more than capable when required and as such never a weakness depending upon who was available each week. The fact that Yogi is well represented in all three facets of the game shows what a loss he will be to us next season having now returned to the UK, not just as a player but a personality - we can only hope that in a year or two's time he decides to have another look at the opportunities in Christchurch and rejoin his team mates.

Helping out the regular players were a group of new and ex-regular players that contributed well on and off the field. Craig, Phil, James and others all had opportunities to make their mark on games and did so with pleasing effect. The highlight for many being an unforgettable 4 ball innings from Phil that included the winning runs in a seemingly lost cause. This innings has re-ignited a spark in Phil and he is now the proud owner of some of the nicest cricket kit in the grade. We are looking forward to more of these moments next season.

Getting a game and a good win, in perfect conditions against the top team in the grade at Hagley Oval number 1 was a great day out. Some of the regular players that didn’tmake this match will be hearing about that for years to come.

The team was again well lead by Brenden who led from the front on all occasions and was recognised by his fellow players as the winner of the Players Player of the Year award at the end of season dinner. He like the rest of us will reflect upon a really good season which now forms a great base for next season to have a serious crack at winning the title for the first time in so many years that no one really knows for sure, but that goes to show what a goal that would be to achieve.

We can’treview the season without mentioning the people that help out the team on the field each week. Kev Congdon is the spine of the team and the glue that allows the players to concentrate on playing, knowing that the other obligations are taken care of. Congo should play much more often, but while he fills the manager role, we are exceptionally well served and very lucky to have such a loyal clubman associated with the side. Finally – we have to acknowledge the wives and girlfriends that lose us every Saturday over summer and smile politely while we spend each after match function enthusiastically reviewing the match in intricate detail. Thanks all –see you next season.

PRESIDENTS GRADE TEAM REPORT –HOSPITAL

The points table this season shows us sitting in 7th place out of 9 teams. Not a great effort in terms of games won but that we managed to actually keep the side going for another season was an amazing effort in its self. Constantly short of players in a grade that is getting more competitive and with players in this grade becoming, on average, younger than the normal forty years plus. My thanks must go to Jim Boyd who took responsibility for organising players and did an excellent job. Also thanks to Andrew McCombie who updated the club website with averages and statistics etc.

Congratulations go to Mark Crawford for winning team player of the year. The batting of Bernard Fanning, when available, rarely fails and this year his bowling added value to the team.

Caleb Lucas and Chris Warren filled the all-rounder spots well this season with good batting and bowling efforts. On occasion Johnny Smart, Chris Stanton and Tony Danenberg made useful contributions with the bat, but inconsistency across the board with the batting made it hard to set decent targets if batting first.

The bowling was very good this year with Jim Boyd, Andrew McCombie and Frank Walsh all doing a great job of trying to defend our totals and bowling well to some very good opposition batsmen.

Congratulations to the other presidents team, Sydenham Cardinals, on a very good season. Our darby games are played with an enthusiastic spirit and with a great relationship between the two teams. Many thanks to the players that played at short notice as well as the committee members and officials that make Sydenham a great club to be a part of.

2013/14 Sydenham Div 1 girl’steam was made up of a new mix of players all facing div1 for the first time. Over all it was a very good season with gradual team building and improvements in consistency and performances ending the season in second place over all.

New to Sydenham CC is Jaime Lyth joining the team as keeper and Linda Pettigrew as our exciting impact player.

The season started with some steady but mixed results and a major turning point came in the three game Kirsty Bond Series (KBS). The 1st KBS game showed excellent performances from Louise Watson scoring 49 NO, Jenna Waghorn 42 NO the team scoring 158 from 25 overs at a rate of 6.32 per over. We managed to bowl Riccarton out for 78 inside 22 overs with some shared bowling performances: Emma Palmer 3 for 8 runs and Amy Danenberg 3 for 10 runs and chipping in with a tight controlled bowling spell Olive Topping conceding 6 runs from her 5 over spell. Wining all three KBS games helped the girls self belief and put the team in a good position.

The next timely highlight came against top of the table St Albans, bowling them out for 82 followed by an unbeaten opening stand between Samantha Fairhall and Jenna Waghorn, both calmly chasing this total down. This win moved our Girls into fourth on the points table, interestingly giving them a playoff against the number one, a slightly stronger St Albans for the following weekend.

Semi final STA batting 1st set our girls the target of 101 to win. A good opening stand between Sam and Jenna of 33 followed by a tight bowling spell from STA which lead to our middle order collapse with our last partnership coming together and 46 runs still required with plenty of overs left. However, STA main attack bowlers had been used up taking a little of the tighter bowling pressure off. You could see STA relax a little in the field and you couldn’tblame them for thinking they had this game in the bag. Jaime Lyth, who had come in at 4, had managed with real grit to stay in and was now coming together with Nicole Hurd needing 46 runs. All the momentum swung back to Sydenham as Nicole Hurd picked a ball up off her legs for 4 and went on to dominate the next few overs putting Sydenham in with a real chance of winning. Things heated up with some quick singles and close calls ending in a positive result for Sydenham. Nicole Hurd also had stepped up to captaining the game for the first time, as we had feed three players to the prem team. I would like to thank Emma Palmer, Linda Pettigrew and the others who filled in for the prem team as required over the season and the div 1 girls remaining each week for stepping up. Thanks also to Morvin and Danielle for coming back and playing late in the season.

My moment Eden Pettigrew, bowling a fast 3 over spell against STA in which Eden found an edge that went flying to a deep set keeper’sgloves.

This team is a pleasure to coach: a keen enthusiastic team of good people whom we get to share collectively in the moments that cricket offers.

This year we have had 7 South West teams playing in the Youth competitions, with 3 morning grade senior teams, two year 10 teams playing in the year10 grade and two year 9 teams, one in morning grade and one in the afternoon grade.

Our first X1 is again playing in the 1st X1 Reserve grade with 11 other teams fighting to get in the top four to play against a couple of teams from the 1st X1 grade later in the year. Unfortunately after a good start they have stumbled and are now out of contention for the top 4, hopefully they can regroup and get some better results later in the year.

Our 2nd grade red team has performed well on the back of some amazing form from Amos Taylor who has scored 4 centuries in the last 7 weeks. This sort of form doesn’thappen often in Youth cricket so well done Amos.

The 2nd grade blue have had some tough battles but have formed a close knit team and continue working hard as a team. One of their better games was nearly chasing down 320 against St Andrews at Cashmere one hot afternoon.

The year 10 grade was split into two even sections and at time of writing both our Blue and Red teams were leading their respective sections. Highlight of this grade was the big partnership between Scott Phillips and Cameron Douglas for the red team with Scott getting 188 and Cam 137, must have been great viewing for the South West supporters.

The year 9 teams are still in the process of getting to know each other and learning to work with each other for longer periods than they had previously been doing in junior cricket and there have been some good signs of improvement over the last couple of weeks. The boys in both these teams are always keen to get out and have a go.

In February we had the prize giving for 2013, thanks to those of you who attended and for those of you who missed the evening the award winners are below.

Again thanks to the parent helpers on Saturdays, thanks for your time, without you we wouldn’tbe able to promote cricket amongst the youth over this side of town. Also thanks to Sydenham Cricket Club, Halswell Cricket Club , Cashmere High School and Catholic Cathedral College for the use of their nets and Pitches over the summer, I think you would all agree that these facilities are all top notch(although a couple of wind breaks on Halswell 2 and 3 would be nice).

Lastly good to see some of the boys from previous years now playing senior cricket, just yesterday our 2012 Manly Cup winner Mitchell Gardner got 6 for 36 for the Sydenham Seniors against Burnside, great to see some SW old boys coming through.
