This year marks another milestone as it is also the 50th anniversary of President Johnson’s signing of the act that created America’s two federal cultural agencies: the National Endowment for the Arts and the National Endowment for the Humanities. Americans for the Arts was there behind the scenes at the beginning and continues as the chief advocate for federal, state, and local support for the arts including the annual NEA budget. Each year with your help we make the case for the funding that fuels creativity and innovation in communities across the United States. -

Videography and photography: Critical thinking, ethics and knowledge-based practice in visual media Storytelling through videography and photography can form the basis for journalism that is both consequential and high impact. Powerful images can shape public opinion and indeed change the world, but with such power comes substantial ethical and intellectual responsibility. The training that prepares journalists to do this work, therefore, must meaningfully integrate deep analytical materials and demand rigorous critical thinking. Students must not only have proficient technical skills but also must know their subject matter deeply and understand the deeper implications of their journalistic choices in selecting materials. This course gives aspiring visual journalists the opportunity to hone critical-thinking skills and devise strategies for addressing multimedia reporting’s ethical concerns on a professional level. It instills values grounded in the best practices of traditional journalism while embracing the latest technologies, all through knowledge-based, hands-on instruction. Learning objectives This course introduces the principles of critical thinking and ethical awareness in nonfiction visual storytelling. Students who take this course will: Learn the duties and rights of journalists in the digital age. Better understand the impact of images and sound on meaning. Develop a professional process for handling multimedia reporting’s ethical challenges. Generate and translate ideas into ethically sound multimedia projects. Understand how to combine responsible journalism with entertaining and artistic storytelling. Think and act as multimedia journalists, producing accurate and balanced stories — even ones that take a point of view. Course design This syllabus is built around the concept of groups of students going through the complete process of producing a multimedia story and writing journal entries about ethical concerns that surface during its development and execution. -

HAUSER & WIRTH Press Release Jack Whitten Hauser & Wirth New York, 22nd Street 26 January – 8 April 2017 Opening reception: Thursday 26 January, 6 – 8 pm New York… Beginning 26 January 2017, Hauser & Wirth is pleased to present its first exhibition devoted to the work of American abstractionist Jack Whitten. The show will feature selections from the artist’s newest bodies of work from 2015 – 2017, including tessellated paintings from the series Quantum Walls, and Portals; a piece from Whitten’s ongoing Black Monolith project honoring African-American visionaries; and assorted lenticular works on evolon. Lushly material explorations of space and its apertures, these works celebrate the distinctive painterly language that Whitten has developed over the course of a five-decade career. ‘Jack Whitten’ will remain on view at Hauser & Wirth’s West 22nd Street space through 8 April 2017. Moving to New York City to study art at Cooper Union in the early 1960s, Whitten was exposed to a range of influences, from the vigorous paintings of fellow artists Willem de Kooning and Norman Lewis, to the rich complexity HAUSER & WIRTH of bebop. Within this cultural milieu he developed an experimental style that combined the expressive physicality of gestural abstraction with the conceptual rigor of systems art. A radical breakthrough in 1970 provided the basis for his mode of working today: lifting a thick slab of acrylic paint off its support, Whitten realized that paint could be coaxed into the form of an independent object, challenging preexisting ideas about dimensionality in visual art. He began to lay sliced acrylic ribbons in wet, uneven fields of paint, mimicking the setting of mosaic tessarae into wet masonry. -

Joslyn Art Museum 2 0 0 7 A N N U A L R E P O R T YEAR AT A GLANCE 201,021 visited Joslyn Art Museum. 293 works of art were acquired by Joslyn Art Museum through gift or purchase in the following areas: Modern and Contemporary (142); American (140); European (8); and Asian (3). 60 works of art were lent by Joslyn to other institutions. 28 works of art were lent by other institutions and individuals to Joslyn's permanent collection. 10 special exhibitions were on view at the Museum. 38,774 attended tours, lectures, gallery talks, special programs for adults, art classes, camps, and other programs at Joslyn. The Museum ended the year with 5,971 membership households and an additional 10,000 members through the Passport Partners program. 46,298 attended music programs at Joslyn. 68,041 participated in Joslyn outreach programs. Volunteers logged 7,855 hours of service for the Museum's Art Reference Library; Museum Shop; Joslyn Art Museum Association events; Young Art Patrons events; and Membership, Education (including the docent program), and Marketing and Public Relations departments (including music series and visitor services). Joslyn's Abrahams Library acquired 699 new volumes, and there were 258 outgoing interlibrary loans. Joslyn Art Museum receives numerous requests from around the world for images of art works from its permanent collection. These images are used in textbooks, exhibition catalogues, books, and other publications; featured on posters, cards, and calendars; and used in films, videos, or television programs. In 2007, there were 77 completed reproduction requests, 46 of which were for works by Karl Bodmer. -

Yet from a contemporary standpoint, the historical narratives prompted in the licensing of her name and image flatten her past into a palatable emblem of 1950s pin-up culture. In this article, I interrogate the ways Page’s image has been mobilized since the 1950s. I propose a cultural biography of Bettie Page attuned to her queer communitarian circulation in order to counter the nostalgic sanitation of her image since the 1990s. In November of 2017, several media industry and gay press news outlets announced that Violet Chachki, drag performer and 2015 RuPaul’s Drag Race season seven champion, would front an advertising campaign for a Bettie Page-inspired lingerie line by London-based brand Playful Promises. -

SCMS 2011 MEDIA CITIZENSHIP • Conference Program and Screening Synopses The Ritz-Carlton, New Orleans • March 10–13, 2011 • SCMS 2011 Letter from the President Welcome to New Orleans and the fabulous Ritz-Carlton Hotel! On behalf of the Board of Directors, I would like to extend my sincere thanks to our members, professional staff, and volunteers who have put enormous time and energy into making this conference a reality. This is my final conference as SCMS President, a position I have held for the past four years. Prior to my presidency, I served two years as President-Elect, and before that, three years as Treasurer. As I look forward to my new role as Past-President, I have begun to reflect on my near decade-long involvement with the administration of the Society. Needless to say, these years have been challenging, inspiring, and expansive. We have traveled to and met in numerous cities, including Atlanta, London, Minneapolis, Vancouver, Chicago, Philadelphia, and Los Angeles. We celebrated our 50th anniversary as a scholarly association. We planned but unfortunately were unable to hold our 2009 conference at Josai University in Tokyo. We mourned the untimely death of our colleague and President-Elect Anne Friedberg while honoring her distinguished contributions to our field. We planned, developed, and launched our new website and have undertaken an ambitious and wide-ranging strategic planning process so as to better position SCMS to serve its members and our discipline today and in the future. At one of our first strategic planning sessions, Justin Wyatt, our gifted and hardworking consultant, asked me to explain to the Board why I had become involved with the work of the Society in the first place.
