Suessicaljr-Programme.Pdf A musical perfect for the whole family, Seussical JR takes us into the world of Dr. Seuss, where we revisit beloved characters including The Cat in the Hat, Horton the Elephant, Gertrude McFuzz, Lazy Mayzie, and JoJo. The Cat in the Hat guides us into The Jungle of Nool where we see Horton, the kind-hearted elephant who discovers a speck of dust containing Whoville. He meets JoJo, a Who child reprimanded for thinking too many “thinks.” Horton decides he must protect the speck of dust on a nearby clover, while at the same time protecting an abandoned egg left to his care by the lazy Mayzie la Bird. Horton tries to convince the other animals in The Jungle of the existence of the Whos, but he is ridiculed and put on trial for insanity. Only his loyal neighbor, Gertrude McFuzz, never loses faith in him and eventually, the two fall in love. Seussical JR weaves a story of friendship, loyalty, and love. Despite all odds, Horton and Gertrude band together to save the Whos, free Horton, and restore peace and unity to the Jungle of Nool. Seussical JR teaches us the power of being unique, and the importance of fighting for your beliefs. He is known for his work writing and illustrating more than 60 books under the pen name Doctor Seuss (abbreviated Dr. Seuss). His work includes many of the most popular children's books of all time, selling over 600 million copies and being translated into more than 20 languages by the time of his death. Geisel adopted the name "Dr. Seuss" as an undergraduate at Dartmouth College and as a graduate student at Lincoln College, Oxford. He left Oxford in 1927 to begin his career as an illustrator and cartoonist for Vanity Fair, Life, and various other publications. He also worked as an illustrator for advertising campaigns, most notably for FLIT and Standard Oil, and as a political cartoonist for the New York newspaper PM. He published his first children's book And to Think That I Saw It on Mulberry Street in 1937. During World War II, he took a brief hiatus from children's literature to illustrate political cartoons, and he also worked in the animation and film department of the United States Army where he wrote, produced or animated many productions – both live-action and animated – including Design for Death, which later won the 1947 Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature. After the war, Geisel returned to writing children's books, writing classics like If I Ran the Zoo (1950), Horton Hears a Who! (1955), If I Ran the Circus (1956), The Cat in the Hat (1957), How the Grinch Stole Christmas! (1957), and Green Eggs and Ham (1960). Several of Geisel's books have been transformed into full-length feature animated films, both during his lifetime and posthumously. In 1966, with the help of eminent cartoonist Chuck Jones, The Grinch Who Stole Christmas was adapted into an animated film made for TV. The book was adapted again in 2000 as a full-length animated feature by director Ron Howard, with Jim Carrey voicing the Grinch, Jeffrey Tambour as Mayor Augustus Maywho and Molly Shannon as Betty Lou Who. In 2008 Horton Hears a Who! was released as an animated feature film starring Jim Carrey as the voice of Horton, Steve Carell as Mayor, Carol Burnett as Kangaroo and Seth Rogen as Morton. In 2012 The Lorax animated feature film hit theaters, with Danny DeVito as the Lorax, Zac Efron as Ted, Taylor Swift as Audrey and Betty White as Grammy Norma. And of course don’t forget the musical Seussical. Hitchin Thespians is looking for new members Do you enjoy singing, performing, or dancing? • B. Academy Award Dr. Seuss Wo
    1. Dr. Seuss is a Pulitzer Prize-winning author. In addition to this, what other award has he won? B. Academy Award Dr. Seuss won two Academy Awards. He won his first Oscar for writing an animated short called “Gerald McBoing-Boing” in 1951. He also won an Academy Award for a documentary called “Design for Death” about Japanese culture. 2. Which of the following Dr. Seuss books was pulled from the shelf? A. “The Butter Battle Book” Published in 1984, “The Butter Battle Book” actually dealt with the nuclear arms race. It was pulled from the shelves after six months because of its underlying references to the Cold War, and the arms race then taking place between Russia and the United States. Interestingly enough, the story was actually made into a short video piece and broadcast in Russia. 3. True or false, though deceased, Dr. Seuss still has new books being published? A. True True. Random House Children’s Books said it will publish Seuss’ manuscript found in 2013 by his widow with illustrations. The book is titled, “What Pet Should I Get” and is set for release on July 28, 2015. Read more. 4. Truffula Trees, Swomee-Swans, and Brown Bar-ba-loots are found in which Seuss tale? E. “The Lorax” A fairly grim tale compared to “Green Eggs and Ham” or “The Cat in the Hat,” “The Lorax” reflects the era in which it was written. In 1971, when the book was released, the U.S. was embroiled in environmental issues left over from the 1960s.

  • SEUSSICAL This December, W.F. West Theatre Continues Its Tradition
SEUSSICAL This December, W.F. West Theatre continues its tradition of bringing children’s theatre to our community when we present: Seussical. The amazing world of Dr. Seuss and his colorful characters come to life on stage in this musical for all ages. The Cat in the Hat takes us through the story of Horton the Elephant and his quest to prove that Whos really do exist. The story: A young boy, JoJo, discovers a red-and-white-striped hat. The Cat in the Hat suddenly appears and brings along with him Horton the Elephant, Gertrude McFuzz, the Whos, Mayzie La Bird and Sour Kangaroo. Horton hears a cry for help. He follows the sound to a tiny speck of dust floating through the air and realizes that there are people living on it. They are so small they can't be seen – the tiny people of Whoville. Horton places them safely onto a soft clover. Sour Kangaroo thinks Horton is crazy for talking to a speck of dust. As Horton is left alone with his clover, the Cat thrusts Jojo into the story. Horton discovers much more about the Whos and their tiny town of Whoville while Jojo's imagination gets the better of him. Horton and Jojo hear each other and become friends when they realize their imaginations are so much alike. Gertrude writes love songs about Horton. She believes Horton doesn't notice her because of her small tail. Mayzie appears with her Bird Girls and offers Gertrude advice which leads her to Doctor Dake and his magic pills for “amayzing” feathers.

He was not an official doctor, but his prescription for fun has delighted readers for more than 60 years. Theodor Seuss Geisel (“Ted”) was born on March 2, 1904, in Springfield, Massachusetts. His father, Theodor Robert, and grandfather were brewmasters and enjoyed great financial success for many years. Coupling the continual threats of Prohibition and World War I, the German-immigrant Geisels were targets for many slurs, particularly with regard to their heritage and livelihoods. In response, they were active participants in the pro-America campaign of World War I. Thus, Ted and his sister Marnie overcame such ridicule and became popular teenagers involved in many different activities.

THE PENNSYLVANIA STATE UNIVERSITY SCHREYER HONORS COLLEGE DEPARTMENT OF ENGLISH DOCTOR ON THE WARPATH: HOW THE SECOND WORLD WAR MADE THEODOR SEUSS GEISEL BRANDON ELLIOTT GATTO Spring 2010 A thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for a baccalaureate degree in English with honors in English Reviewed and approved* by the following: Sanford Schwartz Associate Professor of English Thesis Supervisor Janet Lyon Associate Professor of English, Women’s Studies, and Science, Technology, and Society Honors Adviser Daniel Hade Associate Professor of Language and Literacy Second Reader * Signatures are on file in the Schreyer Honors College. i Abstract The stories of Dr. Seuss, one of the most popular and best-selling children’s authors of all time, are often associated with fantastic characters, whimsical settings, and witty rhymes. While such facets are commonplace in the world of children’s literature, the ability of Theodor Seuss Geisel to transform reality into a nonsense arena of eloquence and simplicity is perhaps what made him a symbol of American culture. Despite his popularity, however, the historical context and primary influences of the author’s memorable lessons are not critically evaluated as much as those of other genre personalities. Many of his children’s books have clear, underlying messages regarding societal affairs and humanity, but deeper connections have yet to be established between Geisel’s pedagogical themes and personal agenda. Accordingly, this thesis strives to prove that the most inherent and significant influences of Dr. Seuss derive from his experiences as a political cartoonist during the Second World War era. Having garnered little recognition before World War II, Geisel’s satirical political illustrations and subsequent war-based work helped shape him into the rousing, unparalleled children’s author that generations have come to read and remember.
