SEUSSICAL This December, W.F. West Theatre continues its tradition of bringing children’s theatre to our community when we present: Seussical. The amazing world of Dr. Seuss and his colorful characters come to life on stage in this musical for all ages. The Cat in the Hat takes us through the story of Horton the Elephant and his quest to prove that Whos really do exist. The story: A young boy, JoJo, discovers a red-and-white-striped hat. The Cat in the Hat suddenly appears and brings along with him Horton the Elephant, Gertrude McFuzz, the Whos, Mayzie La Bird and Sour Kangaroo. Horton hears a cry for help. He follows the sound to a tiny speck of dust floating through the air and realizes that there are people living on it. They are so small they can't be seen – the tiny people of Whoville. Horton places them safely onto a soft clover. Sour Kangaroo thinks Horton is crazy for talking to a speck of dust. As Horton is left alone with his clover, the Cat thrusts Jojo into the story. Horton discovers much more about the Whos and their tiny town of Whoville while Jojo's imagination gets the better of him. Horton and Jojo hear each other and become friends when they realize their imaginations are so much alike. Gertrude writes love songs about Horton. She believes Horton doesn't notice her because of her small tail. Mayzie appears with her Bird Girls and offers Gertrude advice which leads her to Doctor Dake and his magic pills for “amayzing” feathers. After taking too many magical pills, Gertrude’s tail begins to grow. The Wickersham Brothers are up to no good. They decide to steal the clover and hand it off to Vlad Vladikoff who flies off with the clover and drops it directly into a huge field of clover. Horton searches frantically for the Whos. Gertrude arrives with her new tail determined to tell Horton how she truly feels about him but Horton is too busy looking for the Whos. Mayzie calls to Horton from her nest in a tree and convinces him to sit on the nest for her while she takes a brief vacation. Seasons pass and Horton is stuck sitting on the egg while the Whos are still lost in the clover. Hunters capture Horton and the egg and take him away where he winds up in the circus. The traveling circus comes to Palm Beach where Mayzie is relaxing and decides she needs a change of scenery. She heads to the circus where she runs into Horton. He begs her to take back her egg but Mayzie decides Horton would be a better parent for her egg than she could ever be so she gives him the egg for good and leaves before he can say no. Horton accepts responsibility of caring for the egg but is still worried about the Whos. Gertrude has gotten rid of her new tail and rescues Horton. She found his clover and Horton finally notices that Gertrude is amazing. Horton is taken back and put on trial for talking to a dust speck and sitting on an egg. Horton is found guilty and the speck of dust is to be boiled in oil. Horton tells the Whos they must yell to be heard. They are heard by all and Whoville is saved.
