And though our performance dates put a deadline on our rehearsal process, our cast and crew never quit their creative “thinks.” We see a fresh show with new interpretations and enhancements every time the lights go down and the music begins. Lynn Ahrens, Stephen Flaherty and Eric Idle, who co-conceived “Seussical ™,” drew from fifteen different Dr. Seuss stories to create the music and book for this production. The story centers around two Hor- ton the Elephant stories—Horton Hears a Who! and Horton Hatches the Egg —and features characters and scenarios from How the Grinch Stole Christmas, The Lorax, The Cat in the Hat , Gertrude McFuzz, McEl- ligot's Pool, and Oh, the Thinks You Can Think! We also encounter some new characters created for the show, including JoJo and the Bird Girls. The story line (which follows Horton Hears a Who!) centers on Horton the Elephant's struggle to protect the people of Whoville, who live on a tiny speck of dust. The Cat in the Hat becomes a mentor to JoJo and a tour guide for the audience as we journey through the imaginary Jungle of Nool, the Planet of Who, and Solla Sollew, with stops in Palm Beach, New York City, and Radnor. All the while, The Cat creates mischief and conflict to keep the story exciting. Dr. Seuss’s stories are universal, offering characters and situa- tions with which each of us can identify. JoJo is the energetic, optimistic child in all of us. The Wickersham brothers, who steal Horton’s clover, are the school bullies who threatened you for your lunch money. Hor- ton is the loving friend who takes responsibility for his actions and keeps his promises no matter what the cost. (Oh, that we all had a Horton in our lives!) For all its fun, “Seussical ™” deftly handles weighty topics, too: the meaning of community, the absurdity of war, tolerance, con- servation, the need to treat every person with respect “no matter how small.” The show takes us on a musical, metered journey to revisit the fantastical worlds we imagined in our youth. So let's relax and listen closely to what the Cat has to say, as we sit here tonight and watch our cast play. Enjoy… and Think! • SEUSSICAL This December, W.F. West Theatre Continues Its Tradition
SEUSSICAL This December, W.F. West Theatre continues its tradition of bringing children’s theatre to our community when we present: Seussical. The amazing world of Dr. Seuss and his colorful characters come to life on stage in this musical for all ages. The Cat in the Hat takes us through the story of Horton the Elephant and his quest to prove that Whos really do exist. The story: A young boy, JoJo, discovers a red-and-white-striped hat. The Cat in the Hat suddenly appears and brings along with him Horton the Elephant, Gertrude McFuzz, the Whos, Mayzie La Bird and Sour Kangaroo. Horton hears a cry for help. He follows the sound to a tiny speck of dust floating through the air and realizes that there are people living on it. They are so small they can't be seen – the tiny people of Whoville. Horton places them safely onto a soft clover. Sour Kangaroo thinks Horton is crazy for talking to a speck of dust. As Horton is left alone with his clover, the Cat thrusts Jojo into the story. Horton discovers much more about the Whos and their tiny town of Whoville while Jojo's imagination gets the better of him. Horton and Jojo hear each other and become friends when they realize their imaginations are so much alike. Gertrude writes love songs about Horton. She believes Horton doesn't notice her because of her small tail. Mayzie appears with her Bird Girls and offers Gertrude advice which leads her to Doctor Dake and his magic pills for “amayzing” feathers.

  • Character Breakdown
CHARACTER BREAKDOWN The characters in Seussical are fantastic and imaginary creations based on characters featured in the Dr. Seuss collection of stories. They speak in Seussian verse, very rhythmic with incredible rhymes, even when not singing. Even though there are four main characters (The Cat, Horton, Gertrude, and JoJo), this is an ensemble based show. The characters work together to tell the story, each playing an important part. The majority of the show is accompanied by music and involves all the characters. In the individual character breakdown, only the main songs each character is featured in are listed, however, the each character may be involved in many other songs. THE CAT IN THE HAT Male or female. The essence of mischief, fun and imagination. The Cat stirs things up, causes trouble, but always sets things right again. Is the host and emcee of the evening, playing many comic minor parts throughout the story, sometimes improvising with the audience, and a presence in almost every scene. Strong singer with strong movement skills and comic ability. Main songs include: Oh, The Thinks You can Think A Day for the Cat in the Hat How Lucky You Are Having a Hunch HORTON THE ELEPHANT Male. An elephant and a citizen of the Jungle of Nool. Gentle, big-hearted, appealing. He is very imaginative and believes in the world’s goodness. He is responsible and always tries to do the right thing for his friends. He is responsible for saving the planet Who and in doing so befriends JoJo. Strong singer/actor with good comic timing.

Holland + Knight Charitable Foundation, Inc. and Theatre Jacksonville present… Based on the works of Dr.Seuss Book by Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty Co-conceived by Eric Idle Lyrics by Lynn Ahrens Music by Stephen Flaherty Study Guide 2006 Sponsored by: Synopsis Based on the beloved characters and stories of Dr.Seuss, this musical incorporates elements from at least 15 Dr.Seuss books and includes appearances by many of his most famous characters. Seussical the Musical follows the adventures of Horton, an elephant, who one day hears voices coming from a speck of dust. He soon discovers that within this tiny speck exists the smallest planet in the universe! And upon this tiny planet live a tiny race of creatures known as Whos! Although ridiculed by the other animals in the Jungle of Nool for believing in something he cannot see, Horton stubbornly persists in his belief that the Whos exist. Meanwhile, the citizens of Who are having some adventures of their own, including a war over which side of the bread gets buttered. Jojo, the smallest child in the city of Who, parallels Horton's journey as he is ostracized for the unpopular act of thinking -- an activity not encouraged by the parents and teachers of Whoville. But in spite of these obstacles, Jojo and Horton attempt to do what they think is right, and together they sing the duet "Alone in the Universe." However, their path will not be easy. Horton is sold to the Circus McGurkus and eventually goes on trial before Judge Yertle the Turtle before the other animals of the jungle come to understand, as Horton has always known, that "a person's a person, no matter how small." During the course of the play, the Cat in the Hat pops in and out of scenes, narrating, playing numerous characters, and helping the younger members of the audience keep track of what's going on.

  • Seussical Kids
Seussical Kids Cast size: Large 21 & Up Cast Type: Children Dance requirement: Standard to None Casting notes: 25 roles + ensemble Plot Summary "Oh, the thinks you can think" when Dr. Seuss' best-loved characters collide and cavort in an unforgettable musical caper! Horton the Elephant, the Cat in the Hat and all of your favorite Dr. Seuss characters spring to life onstage in Seussical KIDS, a fantastical musical extravaganza from Tony-winners, Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty (Lucky Stiff, My Favorite Year, Once on This Island, Ragtime). Transporting audiences from the Jungle of Nool to the Circus McGurkus, the Cat in the Hat, our narrator, tells the story of Horton, an elephant who discovers a speck of dust containing tiny people called the Whos, including Jojo, a Who child, who gets in trouble for thinking too many "thinks." Horton's challenge is twofold – not only must he protect the Whos from a world of naysayers and dangers, but he must also guard an abandoned egg that's been left in his care by the irresponsible Mayzie La Bird. Although Horton faces ridicule, danger, kidnapping and a trial, the intrepid Gertrude McFuzz never loses faith in him. Ultimately, the powers of friendship, loyalty, family and community are challenged and emerge triumphant! Seussical KIDS is great fun for the whole family. Young performers will be excited to portray the characters from the popular Dr. Seuss books. This musical provides wonderful creative opportunities in terms of set design, lighting and costuming and can easily accommodate a large cast. Character Breakdown ENSEMBLE The Whos, Jungle Citizens (1-5), Fish, the Wickershams, the Talk Show Host and Marshal are all essential roles for creating the vivid and imaginative world of Seuss.
