Chairman’s Chatter Good evening and welcome to this Division 2 clash with our friends and rivals Sutton United. I extend a warm Paget welcome to the players, supporters and officials of Sutton United and hope to see you all in the bar after the game. We kicked off the season on Saturday with a narrow 3-2 defeat against last season's runners-up, Fairfield Villa. Paget put in a good performance overall and some silly mistakes cost us goals, however this is a new team still learning to play together and we will no doubt achieve our targets for the season. The squad has been strengthened with a signing of real quality in Marcus Brown from Romulus. Marcus is Romulus' second highest goal scorer of all time and scored over 100 goals in 150 games for the Roms. I would like to place on record my thanks to Romulus chairman, Richard Evans for his help and co-operation during the transfer process and hope Marcus can supply us with the goals to fire us to glory. The club is actively looking to strengthen in a couple of further positions to ensure that there is stiff competition for places across the park. Committed, ambitious players are the future of Paget Rangers FC and the club is now moving in the right direction to achieve this as our squad takes on it's new look. On Saturday we visit our old foes, United, in the cage at the Alan Higgs centre. There will be a big crowd in attendance so all support for the Bears is more than welcome, but first let's focus on the task in hand and that's securing three points tonight against Sutton United. COME ON YOU BEARS!

Chairman,Matthew Paget Rangers Dainty

Welcome today’s opponents: SUTTON UNITED A History of Sutton United FC – adapted from the detailed history on the Sutton United website. Sutton United Football Club was founded in 1947 by three young men recently demobbed from the RAF. Frank White, Ken Smith and Bill Walker had met before the start of World War II whilst with the Air Training Corps in Sutton and - after returning home at the end of the conflict - asked Squadron 495 to form an amateur football club which was agreed. So Sutton United was born - using a small monetary gift from the ATC - with Frank as Chairman, Ken as Treasurer and Bill as Secretary. The name United was chosen as there was already a Sutton Town and an Athletic. At this time rationing was still very much in force and everything - including food and consumer goods - was in extremely short supply and difficult to obtain. Green shirts became the team’s colours after they were given a blue goalkeeper’s jersey and some green shirts from the ATC, which they then made up into a complete kit. The team started out playing in a field off Cows Lane, Wylde Green, using the trees to change under and a nearby stream to wash in. Sutton United played friendly games until the club joined the Birmingham AFA after being proposed by local rivals Parkfield. Eventually, the club had to move and a pitch was found on land belonging to James Booth in Penns Lane. There were changing rooms – an old railway truck – but still no running water. This was used for 2-3 years, until Sutton Town Council provided the club with a pitch at Rectory Park. By now Frank White was the only one of the original three founders left - but Sutton United had two teams and was growing stronger. When compared to the AFA’s established ‘giants’ like Wake Green and Silhill, the club were still minnows but, even then, there was the drive to go onwards and upwards and the move towards future success was steadily gaining momentum. The Swinging Sixties saw more progress for the club. Games at Rectory Park had involved changing in a scout hut in nearby Broomie Close. But then the council built a very small and basic changing room block for the four pitches in the park. The 1960 fixture list had many of today’s familiar names such as Wake Green, Silhill, Parkfield and Phoenix. But there were also the likes of Keep Bros, Gas Officials, Dudley Old Boys, Handsworth Wood Arsenal, Cradley Chain and Castings and Birmingham Telephone Area, all of whom are now long gone. The 1970s was the decade of change for Sutton United. The teams had been strengthened by excellent players joining from rivals Sutton British Legion FC. But it was not until 1974 that the club finally achieved promotion to the Premier Division - having missed out previously because of inadequate facilities in Rectory Park. The first major success came with the Senior Cup in 1974/75 when Sutton beat Old Wulfrunians 4-3 after extra time. The following season the club lost 4-2 in the Senior Cup final after a replay and extra time. The start of the 1980s saw all the good work at the club come to fruition as Sutton United landed its first title in the 1982/83 season. Two more Premier league titles were to follow along with four more league championships and fourteen cup wins establishing Sutton United as the club to beat. The 1990’s was a quiet decade with regard to the championships although the first team finished runners-up on seven separate occasions. However, the trophy cabinet was kept busy as the club landed two Senior Cups, the Junior Cup, two Minor Cups, five Holder Cups, the Youth Cup and the Veterans Cup. In 2006-07 the first team won the Premier league title in 2006/07 after a gap of 23 years and also landed the HS Shield. After three successive Birmingham & District AFA premier division titles in 2009/10, 2010/11 and 2011/12 the club took the bold decision for the first team to move up in 2012/13 to the Midland Combination. Sutton United began the season well in both league and cup and throughout looked likely candidates for promotion. The progress in cup competitions and accumulation of postponements arising from the continual bad weather resulted in a heavy schedule of matches at the end of the season. United could not quite sustain sufficient momentum to end the season as champions but were promoted as runners-up – a tremendous achievement in their first season in the league. Furthermore the club claimed its first Midland Combination trophy with a 4-2 win over AFC Stratford in the final of the Challenge Vase. The 2013-14 season saw Sutton United adapt well at the higher level finishing in an excellent third only one point behind second placed Fairfield Villa.

We’ve met before Paget played two league games against Sutton United teams in the 2012-13 Birmingham AFA Division 2.

Paget Rangers 3-0 Sutton United A dominant display from Paget saw the Bears extend their lead at the top of league table following a 3-0 victory over Sutton United. Played in glorious sunshine at the Gas Ground, it was Sutton who indeed started brighter. The long ball over the top was a particular threat to the Paget back line in the opening 10 minutes and only a series of saves from Paul Smith kept the score at 0-0. On 20 minutes, Midfielder Matt Coates was replaced due to an injury with Michael Harrigan returning from the bench after suspension. The substitution worked in Paget's favour however and with Harrigan sweeping at the back Paget began to control the game. Paget created a series of chances and were unlucky when in quick succession efforts from Zouch, Edkins and Flynn all hit the post with the keeper well beaten. The breakthrough however finally came in the 37th minute. Great play from Randy Mandombo found Danny Zouch who unleashed a vicious shot across goal to put the hosts 1-0 ahead. Sutton started the second half brightly determined to try and overturn their deficit and on the 49th minute forced a superb save from Paul Smith; however that was to be the last meaningful chance for Sutton as Paget started to control the midfield. Randy Mandombo was a thorn in Sutton's side throughout, his link up play and vision creating a series of chances. On the 60th minute a great one two with Adam Flynn, put Flynn clear through on goal, the midfielder making no mistake to put Paget 2-0 ahead. Paget could now start to relax and controlled the pace of the game. On the 79th minute Randy Mandombo played the ball through to birthday boy Mark Bennett who smashed the ball into the net.

Sutton United 1-8 Paget Rangers Paget Rangers returned to action after the enforced 'winter break' by mauling fellow title challengers and local rivals Sutton United by eight goals to one. The score could've in-fact been higher as Paget sent out not only a message to the AFA Division 2 but those watching from higher up the pyramid. Paget attacked from the off and took the lead as early as the 4th minute when Kurt White passed to Simon Drake who made no mistake. Paget then had a goal disallowed on the 8th minute when Luke Bradley's corner missed everyone to go straight into the net. However it was ruled out for an alleged push on a defender. Paget did extend their lead in the 18th minute. Luke Bradley received the ball wide on the left and outpaced the entire Sutton United defence before feeding a low cross to Simon Drake who tapped the ball home. Paget soon scored a third, Kurt White firing home from inside the box in the 23rd minute. However, some sloppy defending saw Sutton grab a lifeline on 32 minutes making the score Sutton 1-3 Paget. On 40 minutes Paget had a 4th, a through ball by Danny Zouch fed Luke Bradley who again used his abundant pace to leave the Sutton defence for dead before slotting passed the stranded keeper. Rather than sit on their lead, in the second half Paget sensed blood and continued to press for goals, they had to wait until the 68th minute however before their lead was extended. On the edge of the box, Simon Drake unleashed a vicious shot that was superbly by the Sutton goalkeeper; however the rebound fell to Luke Bradley who reacted quickest to notch his second and put Paget 5-1 ahead. Paget soon had a sixth, a great solo run by Simon Drake was finished superbly passed the now despairing Sutton keeper on 71 minutes, Drake completing his first hat-trick for the club. On 83 minutes Drake this time turned provider crossing for Luke Bradley who rifled home to complete his hat-trick and put Paget 7-1 ahead. Paget saved the best until last in the 90th minute when Drake got his fourth and Paget's eighth by superbly chipping the onrushing Sutton keeper from some 20 plus yards. three 02 PAGET v Sutton United:Layout 1 12/08/2014 09:11 Page 6

Manager’s Notes It was an eventful first game and for the neutral 5 goals were a bonus cheap as chips when you consider the £3 entry fee. But for the club this is a work in progress and we have a long season ahead to cement our position in this league. Building a team to challenge at the top takes time. One thing I am sure of is we will build the team on solid foundations, unhindered by opinions, as I feel many managers at this level make knee jerk reactions to appease the few. Our youth teams are a credit to their coaches and tonight you may get to see a product of our youth system in our central midfield player Mitchell Dunbar. I am a great believer that age is no barrier in football at both ends of the scale. It is ability that counts together with fitness. Sutton United have an excellent team and I am certain looking at recent results it will be entertaining to say the least as local derbies go. Simon Says… If you switched on the news for the Middle East over the years you could be forgiven in thinking that football is not a big industry, apart from mega rich Arabs buying English teams. This view point is far from true as football in the Middle East is in the blood like football fans around the world, the only difference is that unlike most other teams there is an undercurrent of religious and nationality that clubs and national sides have to contend with. Like Britain in the 1970s and early 1980’s when black players were becoming more into the game and black players breaking into the national side in the Arab players in can face difficulties from all sides. From right wing Jewish football fans to those Arabs and Palestinians who whilst loving their football refuse to support the Israeli national side. However, there are players who do break through into the Israeli National side and none more so than in recent years with the Israeli Under 21 side who played in the European Under 21 2013. Players such as Marwan Kabha from Maccabi , Ben Vehava from Kiryat Shmona, Teleb Tawatiha from Maccabi Haifa, Mohammed Kalibat from Bnei Sakhnin and Ahad Azam who is a Bedouin plays for Hapoel Haifa. Among the most famous Arab Israeli footballers is Abbas Suan, who played for Bnei Sakhnin and now manages the clubs youth team. He was made a national hero and a film documenting his life after scoring the winning goal in the Israeli National State Cup in 2004. Football has two professionals leagues these being the Legat HaAl ( and the (National League). Below these are the (A League) which is divided into North and South Structure relegated teams join the (B League) which is divided into 4 groups two for the north and two south. Below this is the amateur leagues Lega Gimel. Among the famous Israeli teams playing in the bottom league is Maccabi who played in the Israeli Premier League in the early years of the 1950’s. In Israel there is also a national league called Noar Premier League and this caters for the top players aged between 18 – 20 years old of which Maccabi Haifa are the current champions. four 02 PAGET v Sutton United:Layout 1 12/08/2014 09:11 Page 7

Match Reports Paget Rangers 2 Fairfield Villa 3 Saturday August 9th 2014. Midland Football League Division 2

Paget opened their Midland Football League season with a narrow defeat against last season’s divisional runners-up, Fairfield Villa. Fielding a number of players making their league debuts, Paget were soon on the back foot. After Collins had instigated an attack for the visitors, John Pykett opened the scoring with a fierce shot across Maguire in the Paget goal after just 3 minutes. After a foul by Danny Cullen Fairfield’s Steven Frost headed just over and Daniel Wilkes then had a shot saved by Maguire. Paget began to get into the game and following a foul by Scott Clulee, the Fairfield defence struggled to clear and Mark Bennett sent in a speculative long shot. However, following a swift counterattack after 18 minutes Connor Collins doubled Fairfield’s lead when he shot home from the edge of the penalty area. Fairfield were clearly on top and David Arrowsmith had to be strong in the tackle when Pykett threatened to break clear. However, Paget began to fight back and it took a good tackle to deny Marcus Brown as he broke into the Fairfield penalty area. Brown then had a cross shot well saved by the Fairfield ‘keeper. Fairfield continued to be dangerous on the counterattack and Clulee had a shot well saved by Maguire. Marcus Brown was becoming more of a threat and was twice thwarted by the Fairfield ‘keeper. In terms of possession the game was now fairly even and after Wilkes had a shot saved by Maguire Paget’s Ashfall had a shot blocked by a Fairfield defender. However, Ashfall did better when he headed home from a Mark Bennett corner just before half-time to encourage the Bears for the second–half. Half-time Paget Rangers 1 Fairfield Villa 2 Michael Edmead replaced Matt Price for the second half with Bennett moving to centre- half and Morris taking Price’s place in midfield. The start of the second half was untidy and Bennett and Blakemore were spoken to by the referee after a confrontation. Following a Paget free-kick Marcus Brown shot wide and then had a shot deflected into the goalkeeper’s arms. Morris then shot straight at the ‘keeper after a slick passing move by Paget and Pykett broke through only to shoot wide of the Paget goal. Fairfield substitute Harris-James saw his shot saved a point blank range by Maguire who then had to save from Collins. After both teams had created chances Collins chased a through ball and lobbed the onrushing Maguire to extend Fairfield’s lead on 81 minutes. Paget were not daunted by this setback and after Ashfall had been fouled by Frost, Marcus Brown curled a stunning free-kick over the Fairfield wall to pull a goal back. Fairfield could have restored their two goal advantage but Maguire managed to palm Harris-James’ lob on to the bar. Ashfall then had a shot blocked and in a final attack Haughton shot wide. A disappointing result but Paget heads never dropped against a good Fairfield team.

Paget Rangers in the 1994-95 Midland Alliance – part 2. On August Bank Holiday Monday 1994 Paget travelled to Stapenhill. Stapenhill had joined the Midland Alliance after 5 seasons in the Midland Combination Premier Division, in which they’d finished 11th in the 1993-94 season. Stapenhill completed 7 full seasons in the Midland Alliance before folding in January 2002 and having their 2001-02 season record expunged. After that they played 5 seasons in the Leicestershire Senior league before re-joining the Midland Alliance and subsequently folding for a second time. After a further 4 seasons in the Leicestershire Senior League, Stapenhill played last season in the East Midlands Counties League where they finished runners-up. Back in 1994, Paget secured a two-nil victory through first goals of the season from Brendan McCarthy and Steve Scott in front of 98 spectators. The following Saturday Paget returned to Coles Lane to play Hinckley Athletic. The recent history of football in Hinckley is too complex to be discussed here. In a nutshell, Hinckley Athletic joined the Midland Alliance having finished 8th in the West Midlands League. After 3 seasons they merged with Hinckley Town to form Hinckley United which lasted 16 full seasons before being wound up in October 2013. In the 2014-15 season a new club known as Hinckley AFC are playing in the Midland Football League Division 1. Paget ran out 2-1 winners against one of the teams that would become a close rival for the title. Goals from Ian Paul and a Gary Williams penalty secured the valuable 3 points. On Saturday September 10th Paget began their 1994-95 FA Cup campaign with a difficult looking away tie at Corby Town. Corby Town were in the Premier Division of the Southern League which at that time was Step 2 of the non-league pyramid, two steps higher than Paget. Paget have enjoyed matches against Corby and can still boast to have inflicted the heaviest ever defeat on Corby, 10-0 in the 1995-96 season. Corby were relegated at the end of the 1994-95 season after winning only 4 of their 42 league matches and conceding 113 goals. After many seasons switching between eastern, western and southern divisions of the Southern League, Corby were promoted back to the Premier Division in 2009. After three seasons they were promoted to the Conference North thereby restoring them to their position in Step 2 only to be relegated after 4 seasons. Given Corby’s impending relegation in 1995, it is perhaps less of a surprise that an in form lower league team such as Paget should run out such convincing winners against a struggling higher ranked opponent. Paget won 5-0 with two goals each from Ian Paul and Trevor Burroughs plus one from Brendan McCarthy in front of 157 spectators. Paget returned to league action at Coles Lane the following Saturday with a tricky looking home match against Knypersley Victoria. Knypersley joined the Midland Alliance from the West Midlands league having finished 6th in the 1993-94 season. They played for 7 seasons in the Midland Alliance before changing their name to Biddulph Victoria. The team played a further 9 seasons in the Alliance before being disbanded after being given notice to quit their ground by trustees of the Sports & Social Club it was affiliated to. Knypersley Victoria now play in the Staffordshire County Senior League Division 1 having been reformed in 2013. In front of a crowd of 101 Paget won 2-0 with second half goals from Stuart Tucker and Jason Marsden. Paget’s reward for their FA Cup giant-killing at Corby was a home tie against Southern League Town. Bridgnorth were to finish a creditable 5th in the Midland Division that season but were to be relegated into the Alliance the following season when they finished bottom. After that they played 9 seasons in the Alliance before being relegated to the Midland Combination. After one season they switched to the West Midlands League and two seasons later were promoted back into the Midland Alliance. Due to financial difficulties, the club folded after the 2012-13 season. A "phoenix" club, called AFC Bridgnorth, now plays in the West Midlands (Regional) League. Paget won 2-1 to claim their second ‘giant’ of the FA Cup campaign. The report in the next home programme stated that “Ian Paul, the Rangers two goal hero in the 5-0 FA Cup win over Corby Town returned to the Paget side, and notched an early goal straight from a corner kick. A Steve Eccleston own goal extended Paget’s lead in the 65th minute, before the Town pulled a goal back on 77 minutes from Jason Yates. This was only Bridgnorth’s second defeat of the season”. Paget were drawn away to old rivals Moor Green in the next qualifying round. nine More on that match plus a FA Vase tie against our current landlords in the next Paget News. 02 PAGET v Sutton United:Layout 1 12/08/2014 09:11 Page 12
