As the founder and artistic director of celebrated dance company Chunky Move, Gideon Obarzanek cultivated a reputation as a choreographic visionary. His gutsy, wildly innovative productions, including the Helpmann Award -winning Glow and Mortal Engine, were artform -defining - and often utilised trailblazing technology to great effect. Obarzanek isalso renowned for the theatricality of his productions - the way he integrates narrative and speech into the choreography. It's no surprise then that when he finally gave up the reigns to Chunky Move in 2012, after 17 years, Sydney Theatre Company wasted no time in securing him for a residency, which resultedinthe stellar Dance Better At Parties last year. But the latest company to enjoy the fruits of Obarzanek's labouris Sydney Dance Company, which is opening its 2014 season with Interplay - a triple bill featuring works from Artistic Director Rafael Bonachela, Italian choreographer Jacopo Godani, and of course Obarzanek, who has created a playful and epic piece for the entire company of dancers, which is set to showcase once again his talent for composing movement pieces on a grand scale. The work is called L'Chaiml, which means `to life' in Hebrew and Yiddish. "Istill have a lot of questions about dance, and contemporary dance specifically," Obarzanek tell SX. "How do I relate to it? How do other people relate to it? So I devised a character who would literally ask the dancers these questions while they are trying to perform. This creates a challenge, or a difficulty, for the dancers in terms of achieving what they're doing because they're constantly trying to answer this person, who's attempting to analyse what they're doing on stage and what makes them interested in what they're doing, and so forth. That struggle is what interests me, and that's what happens in this piece. Then the dancers convince this person to come and join them on stage, THREE'S COMPANY which is when the work really takes off." Zoe is great, and it's interesting for me because the basic script was developed with David, who will play the character in the Canberra and Melbourne seasons - so to hear a woman's voice say his words is interesting and works really well." Obarzanek, who actually danced with Sydney Dance Companyatthevery beginning of his career, is impressed with the troupe of dancers Bonachela has assembled. "I think they are a good team and they seem to be professionally and socially close," Obarzanek says. "It's quite tough in a dance company where you're working for many hours a day together, but they seem to be exceptionally comfortable with each other. I think that's a tribute to Raf and his staff, because they embody that sociability, and the ability to get on well in a constructive way - and it shows in the dancers. Obarzanekalsoapplaudstheway Bonachela constantly exposes the dancers to different choreographers from around the world. "They certainly have more range and a stronger technical base than when I was in the company," he says. "We couldn't do a lot of the stuff these dancers do now."
