1 2017 Charlotte Cross-Country

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Joseph Lynn, who was hired in August 2017, takes over as the head coach of Charlotte’s cross-country program. Cara Cremeans joined the program as an assistant coach, later in the same month.

He will look to have an impact on the program immediately. The men were ranked 10th in the Southeast Region Preseason Poll, which is where they finished last season, while the women enter the season unranked. However, Lynn’s wealth of success and experience boads well for the programs moving forward.

Lynn inherited a wealth of youth with seven true freshmen joining the men’s team. The most experienced runners on the men’s side are redshirt juniors Mihret Coulter and Tom Nobles. However, sophomore’s Paul Arredondo, Alex Cornwell and Zach Marchinko gained valuable experience last season and should help to form a solid nucleus.

“Paul, Alex, Mihret, Zach and Tom put in great summers of work and established themselves at the front of the team thus far in workouts,” Lynn said. “Nobles and Coulter showed during the outdoor season they are capable of running with the best in the region, if not in the NCAA and have brought that same mindset into this fall. Arredondo, Cornwell and Marchinko have built off a solid freshman year and look ready to be significant factors for us come championship season.”

Nobles and Marchinko earned All-Conference USA honors after placing eighth and 10th, respectively at last season’s conference championships.

Redshirt freshmen Matt Conner, Todd Gunzenhauser, Nolan Patrick and Jayquan Williams are the only other student-athletes returning from last year’s team, while Alec Sheerer joins the 49ers, after a freshman campaign at the University of Indianapolis.

Caroline Sang and Erin Nelson are redshirt juniors and they should provide the l leadership on the women’s squad. Sang led the team in every event last season and finished second at the conference championships, earning FirstTeam All-C-USA honors.

“Caroline had a major breakout year last year, and without a doubt she looks prepared to continue that momentum into this fall,” Lynn said. “I’m really excited to see how she continues to progress as her level of training continues to elevate throughout the season. Erin brings major experience to the group, her leadership is invaluable.”

Brittany Stanley, Katie Tomasi and Bridget Abbatiello return for their sophomore campaigns and should make solid contributions. Alexia Noch joins the 49ers and is the only true freshman on the roster.

“Brittany, Katie, and Bridget are all coming off flashes of brilliance throughout last year,” Lynn said. “Hopefully with a year of adjustment to college under their belts, they have the confidence to race at the level which I see each day at practice and know they are capable of.”

Southern Mississippi will host the Conference USA Championships in Jackson, Miss. on Oct. 28. The NCAA Southeast Regional is on Nov. 10 in Charlottesville, Va., while the NCAA Championships is eight days later in Louisville, Ky.
