The Charlotte 49ers men’s and women’s cross country teams begin their third season under coach Alex Gibby, who joined the program in 2014 .

In his first season as the program’s seventh head coach, Gibby sent 15 runners to the NCAA Southeast Regional in Louisville, Ky . He then coached 14 runners, seven on the men’s side and seven on the women’s side, at the 2015 NCAA Southeast Regional in Charlottesville, Va .

On the men’s squad, Gibby will have an abundance of youth at his disposal with 10 true freshman joining the program . The most experienced runners on the team are redshirt sophomores Josh Barrett, Mihret Coulter and Tom Nobles, furthur empha- sizing how young this team truly is .

Nobles proved to be the standout of the group as he led the 49ers in three of the five races he ran in. The Cary, N.C. native just missed All-Conference USA honors after placing 22nd at the conference championships and set a personal record time of 31:26 .0 in the NCAA Southeast Regional 10K .

Redshirt freshmen Matt Bomkamp, Aaron Gebhart, Bobby Gonzalez and Alex Sumida represent the only other student-athletes returning in 2016 .

The women’s side shares a similar amount of youth competing for the 49ers this fall as nine true freshman will see college competition for the first time. The women will have at least one veteran to lead the way as redshirt senior Carolina (CARO-lee-nah) Casin-Silva makes her return .

Casin-Silva was Charlotte’s top team finisher in four of six meets in 2015 and recorded a personal record of 18 .23 .9 in the 5K at the Conference USA Champion- ships to earn Third Team All-C-USA honors .

Redshirt sophomores Erin Nelson and Caroline Sang, and redshirt freshmen Taylor Brown and Abbey Harrison will also make their return to the course in 2016 .

The Niners schedule this fall features six meets including two to be hosted by Charlotte . The 2016 campaign kicks off with the Charlotte Preview on Sept . 2 before the team travels to neighboring Virginia for the William & Mary Invita- tional on Sept . 16 and the UVA-hosted Lou Onesty Invitational on Sept . 24 .

The 49ers then make their way to University Park, Pa . where they will compete in the Penn State Open on Oct . 15 .

Charlotte will serve as host for the Conference USA Championships for the first time in program history on Oct . 2 with N .C . State’s Adidas 3-Stripe Invitational capping the regular season in Raleigh on Nov . 5 .

If members of the team qualify, they will then wrap up the year at the NCAA Southeast Regional back in Charlottesville, Va . on Nov . 11 and the NCAA Cham- pionships in Terre Haute, Ind . on Nov . 19 .
