2019-20 Season Introduction

At every Dunedin Consort performance, we want our audiences to hear things differently.

Whether you join us in the grand surroundings of the Royal Albert Hall or in the intimacy of Glasgow University Chapel, in a primary school in Midlothian or in Dundee’s magnificent new V&A Museum, our aim remains the same: to help you to hear familiar masterpieces afresh, to find the new in the familiar, the exquisite in the everyday. We also hope you will embrace new music with the same eagerness and curiosity. You’ll still findthe cornerstones of the repertoire across our 2019-20 season, including Handel’s in December, and Bach’s Matthew Passion in Holy Week. But there is plenty more to discover along the way too. From Tomás Luis de Victoria and , to Cecilia McDowall and James MacMillan, each has its place in a programme that explores the dialogue between the old and the new. Other highlights include our appearance at the BBC Proms, with a programme featuring four new commissions written to complement Bach’s magnificent Partners Orchestral Suites – a throwback to the ‘Bach Nights’ Henry Wood himself hosted more than a century ago. In August, we present a series of seven concerts at the Dunedin Consort acknowledges with grateful thanks International Festival, before taking up residence at Lammermuir the support of Creative Scotland, Dunard Fund Festival in September, presenting Vivaldi’s Four Seasons and Bach’s complete and the Binks Trust, who very generously support across four concerts, alongside concerto grossi by Handel. our programme. In March, we join forces with our friends at Scottish Ensemble to perform James MacMillan’s powerful account of the passion story, Seven Last Words from the Cross. And in June, we journey north to the Highlands, with an intimate programme of Purcell songs featuring soprano Mhairi Lawson. We welcome guest directors Nicholas Mulroy, who directs our choral tour in November, and Kristian Bezuidenhout, who returns to lead our Matthew Passion performances in April. And we’ll be bringing our music to more people than ever before, with the expansion of our learning programme in Scotland (see pages 25–27) and tours that take us across Scotland and around the globe. We hope you will join us along the way, to share in this magnificent music and to experience the thrill in discovering it anew.

Soprano Mhairi Lawson joins us for an intimate programme of song, a genre that Purcell firmly made his own. With his flair for drama and extraordinary gift for bringing words to life, Purcell poured many of his most creative ideas into his songs – each of them miniature masterpieces, equally as captivating as anything he would compose for the stage. They are paired here with some of his most exquisite and intricately wrought instrumental works, shining examples of Baroque dialogue at its most eloquent.
