The Dark Lord: H.P. Lovecraft, Kenneth Grant, and the Typhonian Tradition in Magic, Peter Levenda The Dark Lord: H.P. Lovecraft, Kenneth Grant, and the Typhonian Tradition in Magic, One of the most famous – yet least understood – manifestations of Thelemic thought has been the works of Kenneth Grant, the British occultist and one-time intimate of Aleister Crowley, who discovered a hidden world within the primary source materials of Crowley’s Aeon of Horus. Using complementary texts from such disparate authors as H.P. Lovecraft, Jack Parsons, Austin Osman Spare, and Charles Stansfeld Jones (“Frater Achad―), Grant formulated a system of magic that expanded upon that delineated in the rituals of the OTO: a system that included elements of Tantra, of Voudon, and in particular that of the Schlangekraft recension of the Necronomicon, all woven together in a dark tapestry of power and illumination. The Dark Lord follows the themes in the writings of Kenneth Grant, H.P. Lovecraft, and the Necronomicon, uncovering further meanings of the concepts of the famous writers of the Left Hand Path. It is for Thelemites, as well as lovers of the Lovecraft Mythos in all its forms, and for those who find the rituals of classical ceremonial magic inadequate for the New Aeon.Traveling through the worlds of religion, literature, and the occult, Peter Levenda takes his readers on a deeply fascinating exploration on magic, evil, and The Dark Lord as he investigates of one of the most neglected theses in the history of modern occultism: the nature of the Typhonian Current and its relationship to Aleister Crowley’s Thelema and H.P. Lovecraft’s Necronomicon. file download zagos.pdf Peter Levenda, History, Jun 1, 2011, The roots of coincidence and conspiracy in American politics, crime, and culture are investigated in this examination of the connections between religion, political conspiracy, A Grimoire of American Political Witchcraft, ISBN:9781936296798, 508 pages, Sinister ForcesThe Manson Secret Sep 1, 2012, Based on Levendas research into Mormonism, Freemasonry, and esoteric societies over the past thirty years, this book is intended for an audience that is curious about, Peter Levenda, ISBN:089254581X, History, The Remarkable Story of the Occult Origins of Mormonism and the Rise of Mormons in American Politics, The Angel and Sorcerer, 144 pages In The Mao of Business, Levenda reveals the secrets of the day-to-day negotiations, project identification, financing, distribution, the ubiquitous sales agent, and the, Oct 15, 2007, Peter Levenda, The Mao of business, Business & Economics, ISBN:0826428517, 220 pages, guerrilla trade techniques for the new China The Dark Lord: H.P. He struggled against it for years. Not until the completion of His own initiation at the end of 1909 did He understand how perfectly He was bound to carry out this work. (Indeed, it was not until his word became conterminous with Himself and His Universe that all alien ideas lost their meaning for him). Again and again He turned away from it, took it up for a few days or hours, then laid it aside. He even attempted to destroy its value, to nullify the result. Again and again the unsleeping might of the Watchers drove Him back to the work; and it was at the very moment when He thought Himself to have escaped that He found Himself fixed for ever with no possibility of again turning aside for the fraction of a second from the path. The history of this must one day be told by a more vivid voice. Properly considered, it is a history of continuous miracle. THE EQUINOX OF THE GODS, 1936 E.V. • The Changing Role of Leah Hirsig in Aleister Crowley's Thelema, 1919
Aries – Journal for the Study of Western Esotericism 21 (2021) 69–93 ARIES brill.com/arie Proximal Authority The Changing Role of Leah Hirsig in Aleister Crowley’s Thelema, 1919–1930 Manon Hedenborg White Södertörn University, Stockholm, Sweden [email protected] Abstract In 1920, the Swiss-American music teacher and occultist Leah Hirsig (1883–1975) was appointed ‘Scarlet Woman’ by the British occultist Aleister Crowley (1875–1947), founder of the religion Thelema. In this role, Hirsig was Crowley’s right-hand woman during a formative period in the Thelemic movement, but her position shifted when Crowley found a new Scarlet Woman in 1924. Hirsig’s importance in Thelema gradually declined, and she distanced herself from the movement in the late 1920s. The article analyses Hirsig’s changing status in Thelema 1919–1930, proposing the term proximal authority as an auxiliary category to MaxWeber’s tripartite typology.Proximal authority is defined as authority ascribed to or enacted by a person based on their real or per- ceived relational closeness to a leader. The article briefly draws on two parallel cases so as to demonstrate the broader applicability of the term in highlighting how relational closeness to a leadership figure can entail considerable yet precarious power. Keywords Aleister Crowley – Leah Hirsig – Max Weber – proximal authority – Thelema 1 Introduction During the reign of Queen Anne of Great Britain (1665–1714), Sarah Churchill, Duchess of Marlborough (1660–1744), was the second most powerful woman in the kingdom. As the queen’s favourite, the Duchess overcame many restrictions hampering women of the time.

She took a risk agreeing to work with a student she had never met on a book she had no academic experience in, and in doing so she gave me the opportunity of my undergraduate career. Andrea knew exactly when to provide her input and when it was best to prod and encourage me and then step out of the way; yet she was always there if I needed her, and every book that she recommended opened up a significant new argument that changed my thesis for the better. The independence and guidance she gave me has resulted in a project I am so, so proud of, and so grateful to her for. I feel so lucky to have had an advisor who could make me laugh while telling me how badly my thesis needed work, who didn’t judge me when I came to her sleep-deprived or couldn’t express myself, and who shared my passion through her willingness to join and guide me on this ride. Her constant encouragement kept me going. I also owe a distinct debt of gratitude to Gillian White, who led my cohort during the fall semester.

starfire2420nov.qxd 20/11/11 11:05 pm Page 9 Scintillations in Mauve An Introduction to the Work of Kenneth Grant enneth Grant was one of the most influential occultists of the 20th century. He leaves behind a substantial and formidable K body of work which will be explored and developed over the years to come. What follows here is an introductory survey of his work — a basis for deeper, more substantial consideration of his work in the future. Born in Essex in 1924, Kenneth Grant developed an intense interest in the occult from an early age, as well as a life-long devotion to Buddhism and other oriental religions. He remarked somewhere in his writings that Eastern mysticism was his first love — an indication not only of how well read he was, but more importantly perhaps his heightened sense of the immanent. Grant relates in Outside the Circles of Time how he had come across a copy of Magick in Theory and Practice — at Zwemmers, in the Charing Cross Road — in the late 1930s or early 1940s. At this period he had also discovered Austin Osman Spare’s The Book of Pleasure at Michael Houghton’s Atlantis Bookshop in Museum Street. After immersing himself in the works of Crowley, he finally managed to make contact with him in 1944, writing to the address provided in The Book of Thoth which had just been published. Visiting him several times, Grant subsequently stayed with him at ‘Netherwood’ in Hastings in 1945, immersed in Magick. Many years later, Grant wrote a memoir of this period of his life, Remembering Aleister Crowley.

Reams have been written about modern man's frenzied search for his soul-and. indeed, his doubt that he even has one at a time when, like castles built on sand, so many of his cherished theories, long mistaken for verities, are crumbling about his bewildered brain. The age-old advice, "Know thyself," is more imperative than ever.

Trafficking with Elementals: Kenneth Grant and Arthur Machen Christopher Josiffe Kenneth Grant, born in 1924, is widely regarded as the ‘grand old man’ of British post-war occult scene. Grant is unique in that he is almost certainly the only person still alive to have known all three of the most influential figures in the twentieth century occult world, having had close personal relationships with both Aleister Crowley and Austin Osman Spare, and also having worked with Gerald Gardner, godfather of the modern Wiccan movement. It has long been acknowledged by students of the occult that Grant has made extensive use of the work of H.P. Lovecraft in his numerous writings and in his magical practices. It is perhaps less well-known that many elements from Arthur Machen’s fiction also features heavily in Grant’s work; in particular, The Novel of the Black Seal, The Hill of Dreams, and The White People. In 1944 Grant contacted Crowley with the intention of becoming his pupil; during these last three years of Crowley’s life Grant was also his secretary and personal assistant. The latter role included the supply of appropriate reading matter; in his fascinating and touching Crowley memoir, Remembering Aleister Crowleyi, Grant quotes a letter from Crowley in which the aged Beast writes: “Very many thanks for Secret Glory {Arthur Machen}; best of his I’ve read. Criticism when I’m strong enough.” (16 Jan 1945)ii. And later that year, at Crowley’s final home, the Hastings guest house Netherwood, they both experienced a vision of Pan, as Grant recounts: The Great God Pan: one morning at ‘Netherwood’, when Crowley accompanied me from the guest-house to the cottage, we experienced a joint ‘vision’ of a satyr-like form in the early spring sunshine.

The focus is on leadership and female domination pictures. Just as the role of kings and princes, the role of their female hero is defined. There are strong and weak women, but by a special interest in the contribution is the development of the last of the first to power versus strength. Leadership means to deal with one's own person, 'self-rule, then, of rulers'. In fairy tales, we find different styles of leadership and management tools. As properties of the good boss is praised in particular the decision-making and less the organizational skills.

  • Defining Fantasy
1 DEFINING FANTASY by Steven S. Long This article is my take on what makes a story Fantasy, the major elements that tend to appear in Fantasy, and perhaps most importantly what the different subgenres of Fantasy are (and what distinguishes them). I’ve adapted it from Chapter One of my book Fantasy Hero, available from Hero Games at www.herogames.com, by eliminating or changing most (but not all) references to gaming and gamers. My insights on Fantasy may not be new or revelatory, but hopefully they at least establish a common ground for discussion. I often find that when people talk about Fantasy they run into trouble right away because they don’t define their terms. A person will use the term “Swords and Sorcery” or “Epic Fantasy” without explaining what he means by that. Since other people may interpret those terms differently, this leads to confusion on the part of the reader, misunderstandings, and all sorts of other frustrating nonsense. So I’m going to define my terms right off the bat. When I say a story is a Swords and Sorcery story, you can be sure that it falls within the general definitions and tropes discussed below. The same goes for Epic Fantasy or any other type of Fantasy tale. Please note that my goal here isn’t necessarily to persuade anyone to agree with me — I hope you will, but that’s not the point. What I call “Epic Fantasy” you may refer to as “Heroic Fantasy” or “Quest Fantasy” or “High Fantasy.” I don’t really care.
