Finally, I would like to thank my partner again for he has shared my happiness and my frustration throughout this entire journey. vi ABSTRACT SAMAH SAMIH ELHAJIBRAHIM BEYOND ORIENTALISM: A STUDY OF THREE ARABIC WOMEN WRITERS MAY2007 In 1978, Edward Said, a Palestinian-American literary theorist, published his famous book, Orienta/ism. The book was an attack on the concepts of "Orient" and "Occident". Said described orientalism as a discourse that helped the West colonize the East. Recent events such as the illegal occupation of Iraq, the war on Afghanistan and U.S. interference in Lebanese affairs, all helped to bring orientalism to the fore. Today, some Arab scholars are questioning if orientalism actually ended. This study argues that orientalism did not vanish but has simply taken on a new form. The aim of this thesis is to study Edward Said' s theory of orientalism and examine his notion that literary production provides the raw material of politics. To examine orientalism and colonialism in the Arab world, I use novels written by three Arab women writers (Fadia Faqir, Pillars of Salt; Yasmin Zahran, A Beggar at Damascus Gate; and Ahlam Mosteghanemi, Memoryin the Flesh). The novels are used as tools with which to build the thesis that orientalism and colonialism continue, largely unchanged, and formthe basis for the troubled relationship between the Westernworld and the Arab world. I argue that orientalist discourse still functionsto justifyand perpetuate the political, economic and vii military hegemony. This thesis also highlights the solutions introduced by Edward Said and the three novelists in order to move beyond orientalism and colonialism. By using novels to examine Edward Said's theory of orientalism, this thesis provides a twofoldcontribution to the field. First, it provides an example of how novels can be used to study social and political phenomena and how novelists are political thinkers who raise the consciousness of the society. Second, this thesis demonstrateshow the study of the literature of other cultures can provide the reader with the opportunityto make a place in their mind for a foreign"other." Through the experiences of the protagonists in Ahlam Mosteghanemi‟s novel Memory in the Flesh and Yamina Bachir-Chouikh‟s film Rachida, the article examines the body as a site and record of trauma and exile, where loss is experienced at both national and individual levels. Through the damaged bodies of men and women, these works demonstrate the disintegrating effects of the Algerian civil war. Keywords: Algerian women, trauma, civil war, body as canvas 1. Introduction Sociopolitical trauma has been a part of Algerian history as a French colony from 1830 to 1962, and as an independent nation from 1962 until the present. The War of Independence was followed by a relatively peaceful period, which ended when changes in governmental authority and widespread corruption brought about a civil war. Riots started in 1988 due to dissatisfaction with the ruling party, the National Liberation Front (FLN). During the Dark Years from 1991 to 2002, Algeria was thrown into turbulence by fundamentalism and terrorism.

La directrice de l'Organisation des Nations unies pour l'éducation, la science et la culture (Unesco), Mme Irina Bokova, a invité la femme de lettres algérienne à associer étroitement ses activités à celles de l'organisation pendant toute la durée de ce mandat. Le choix de l'Unesco s'est porté, a ajouté la même source, sur une des romancières arabes les plus influentes et les plus vendues dans le monde, qui s'est distinguée par son travail en faveur des droits de la femme, du dialogue interculturel et de la lutte contre la violence. It is essentially inspired by Lawrence Venuti’s ideas on translation and the “formation of cultural identities”.     1 Power and Publishing: Contemporary Arabophone and Francophone Algerian Literature and its National and Transnational Conditions of Production by Miss Karima Bentoumi A Thesis Submitted to the University of Portsmouth In Partial Fulfilment of the Requirements for the Degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY April 2020 2 Abstract This thesis explores the relationship between Algerian fiction writing and its conditions of production. It examines how these conditions of production shape both literary careers and novels’ thematic concerns. It assesses the possibilities and limitations of the existence of an “Algerian literary field” within a transnational context in which Algeria is an economically minor cultural player. The evolution of the relationship between art and the market is studied across the longue durée – i.e. since the first Algerian novels were published at the start of the twentieth century to the present day. Particular attention is paid to a new generation of Algerian authors – mostly in their late 30s – writing today, whom have hitherto not been the subject of academic study. This is alongside the analysis of the careers and work of internationally well-known contemporary authors Kamel Daoud, Yasmina Khadra, Boualem Sansal, Waciny Laredj and Ahlam Mosteghanemi, who owe part of their success to the creation of literary personas, and notably the persona of the post- colonial “translator” of Algeria to non-Algerian audiences. The majority of existing academic studies focus on Francophone fiction publishing. Arabic-language fiction and publishing has tended to be understudied. This thesis brings together the study of Arabic-language literature with that of French-language literature to offer a more complete study of the Algerian publishing scene.
