Saint Bede Academy Welcomes You to 29Th Auction Gala April 28, 2012 Saint Bede Academy Saint Bede Academy Welcomes You To 29th Auction Gala April 28, 2012 There’s No Place Like Home 2012 AuctionS 1 W elcome to the 29th Annual “There’s No Place Like Home” Auction Gala! It’s time to sit back, relax and enjoy the familiar surroundings of HOME. Saint Bede Academy! You may find yourself daydreaming of a place ‘Somewhere Over The Rainbow’! “Where the skies are blue, and the dreams that you dare to dream really do come true.” Much like Saint Bede prepares our students to pursue their dreams, our auction gala offers us the opportunity to pursue our dream of reaching our fundraising goal to Fund the “Gap” between the price of tuition and the cost to educate each student at Saint Bede. That difference is $4,000 per student. Together, our efforts can make a difference. Please give generously and by doing so you will have a direct impact on the future of Saint Bede. Your contributions are an investment in our students, the 295 students who comprise our HOME today. Revel in the comforts of HOME. Take pleasure in the company of your friends. Enjoy the delightful ‘Taste of Saint Bede’ cuisine and dessert prepared especially for you. Give thanks to those who serve you tonight. And finally, relish in the glory of knowing that you have done your part to ensure that the Saint Bede tradition carries on! Heartfelt Thanks, Donna Aleksy 2 Saint Bede Academy Dear Friends, Welcome to my home where we will be enjoying the 29th auction to benefit St. Bede Academy. Some years ago when I had the honor of serving as part time chaplain in the Academy, I gave a homily based on the saying, “mi casa es su casa es nuestra casa.” St. Bede is home to the monks who live here. We make the vow of stability to live, pray and work here for our whole life. St. Benedict gives us the key to making a place a home when he writes that we must be patient with one another and put up with one another’s weaknesses. When we welcome new students to St. Bede our goal is not only to educate them in academic areas but to help them become part of a family dedicated to learning and to serve God and neighbor. I can’t tell you how many times alumni have said to me that coming back to St. Bede is “like coming home.” Every homecoming I am deeply moved as the golden bedans walk up to their former teachers and greet them with great affection and express appreciation for finding a home here. It is our hope that all of you who are with us for the auction will also experience St. Bede as your home so that we can together say; St. Bede is “nuestra casa”. I am reminded of the saying, “Home is where the heart is.” That is true for the monks, and we hope for you, and for all our students. I hope that as you came into the gym for the auction, you too had a sense of coming home. We are gathered here to ensure that our present students will have the opportunity to come to know St. Bede as their home, and that many future generations will be able to do the same. And so as you gather here please recognize that the auction is really an affair of the heart, and I hope that your generosity will flow from your heart and the simple but basic realization that “There is no place like home!” On behalf of all of us at St. Bede, I thank you, for only through your generosity, do the students you see at the auction tonight have the opportunity to make St. Bede their home. Fortunately for the Empire State duffers among us (if not for our golf partners), the New York Court of Appeals recently affirmed a lower court ruling that a golfer has no duty to warn other players by yelling “fore!” before their errant shot strikes another golfer. The incident giving rise to the case occurred in October 2002 on the Dix Hills Park Golf Course on Long Island. Dr. Azad Anand and Dr. Anoop Kapoor were golfing buddies and one morning in October their group had just hit their second shots on the first hole. Walking ahead, Anand found his ball resting in the fairway rough but was unaware that, farther back, his playing partner had already begun his third swing.

35TH ANNIVERSARY OF NFL-AFL MERGER From April through June 1966, Lamar Hunt exchanged correspondence with Dallas Cowboys general manager TEX SCHRAMM, who was acting on behalf of Commissioner PETE ROZELLE on a possible merger between the AFL and NFL. On June 8, 1966, the two leagues announced an agreement in which: · The nine AFL clubs (expansion Miami was added in 1966) would pay a total of $18 million over 20 years to join the NFL. · Pete Rozelle would serve as commissioner. · The leagues would play a championship game following the 1966 season. · Existing franchises would remain at present sites. · A common draft would be held, beginning in 1967. · Two new franchises, one in each league, would be added by 1968 (Cincinnati and New Orleans). · Interleague preseason games would be played in 1967, and a common schedule would begin in 1970. The NFL-AFL merger was approved by Congress on October 21, 1966, when an anti-trust exemption was added as a rider to an anti-inflation tax bill. President LYNDON B. JOHNSON signed the bill into law. In August 1969, after spending 36 hours behind closed doors, NFL and AFL owners announced the creation of two 13-team conferences – the AFC and the NFC. Three NFL clubs – the Baltimore Colts, Cleveland Browns and Pittsburgh Steelers – joined the AFL clubs in the American Conference and the remaining NFL clubs composed the National Conference.
